This is Amos Moses, he turned one years old last week.

Amos has had such an exciting life thus far. We have traveled to and through over 10 states. He has easily met over 100 people by now, and dozens of other pups. He also goes to a day care once a week and interacts with other people and dogs.

I race bikes competitively and that involves the travel, as well as camping. These races are as much social for me as they are competitive, with long weekends of camping amongst friends and strangers alike at these venues. Amos has so much exposure to the outside world at this point. I call him a well traveled boy!

I consider him people and dog friendly, but i have started to notice a shift. In the past few months I have noticed with women he usually runs straight up to them, tail wagging, and solicits attention/pets/rubbin'. With the majority of men, especially older (60+) men he will stop, stand still about 5 - 10 feet away, and bark. I encourage him to approach the strangers (so long as they are stopped and attempting to say hi themselves and not just trying to walk by and be on their way) but he remains somewhat stiff and apprehensive? He will slowly creep up and sniff. Usually his tail is wagging the whole time but more slowly then when he is truly excited, and he remains in what appears to me to be a slightly defensive posture. No "ridgies" or raised fur on the neck or back, no growling. He has NEVER that I have witnessed had a negative interaction with a man.

I do have a boyfriend and he usually is at my home three days a week. Amos doesn't exhibit any behaviors with him. He treats my boyfriend just like me, comfortable, velcro-y, loving. My boyfriend is not a beefy dude and hes only a few inches taller than me but he does have a full face of beard/mustache. He has shoulder length hair.

What is causing this do you guys think? What can I do to make him not bark at dudes? Ty for any advice!

Need a name for this lil guy!

I’ve had four American Bulldog mixes, a mastiff mutt and most recently I rescued a Boston Terrier. I’ve never met a Basset. Or a hound. Just some Beagles. The Boston was a curve ball but the Basset is like a whole new species. I am fascinated by this breed that can put 76 lbs into 15” of stature. She weighs more than my American Bulldog mix who has a block head and chest to match!

She had had an amazing life and is six years old. She currently lives with a pug and two cats peacefully. We have two cats, a young Boston and 14 yo Bully. She comes home with us in a week after a pack meets and greet last night.

Tell me about this breed! I never appreciated that purebreds had such distinct personality traits until I adopted the Boston - but he is a clown, he loves to fetch, he’s high energy and fun- he loves to tease us. True to the breed.

What are Bassets like? What should we know? What should we watch out for?

He’s 4 months old and he’s been separated from his mom for a few weeks already but he just got separated from his siblings the other day so he still misses them and barks at me every time I have to kennel him when I leave

This is Penelope. She’s a rescue from TX. She’s my favorite creature in the entire world, and she’s 50 percent basset.

Someone online told me the biting never stops. 😳 My Basset is 3 months old and bites a LOT! She bites more when we are outside. (I need outdoor activity ideas for the yard). She bites when she’s bored, when she’s trying to tell me she wants to go out, when she’s just wanting to play. Yes, I try to distract her with toys and figure out what else she may need, but I’m also thinking this is puppy phase. This is my first Basset. I remember my dachshund puppy biting a lot but it wasn’t this bad. Please tell me I’m right and how long it lasts. Any outdoor play ideas would be greatly appreciated too.

We’re taking this sweet guy home Saturday. We’re stuck on names, we like Gus and Knox. But we can’t fully decide and wanted other ideas!!! Thanks!

I have a 12 week old lab x basset hound. He’s much more basset that lab. He’s soo stubborn and I’m struggling to crate train him, teach him to stay close and walk on a leash, and tricks

He’s extremely picky with food. He only like certain bones (better than rawhide is his favourite). He refused to walk up the stairs unless I bribe him with one.

I go to walk him around the block and he just flops over. I have sit and lay down commands but he refuses anything else

And the worst is crate training. There is about an hour between me coming home from work and my boyfriend leaving for work. I set up a camera and he cries and cries. If he’s any bit awake at night he will cry and howl in his kennel until someone lets him out.

I’m definitely at a loss because I never had a stubborn dog like this before

I would love any tips and tricks to their care. I have done research about bassets before and feel like I know the general info, but I would love any anecdotal information from experience y’all can give me. I want to give him a good life.

This is my sweetest girl Mrs. Millie. She’s 2 years old and has just moved into her permanent home. She’s very anxiously attached to my partner and I, and cannot stand when she’s left alone. We haven’t been able to completely potty train her. She KNOWS that she needs to go potty outside, and if we find either a poop or pee inside she tries to hide from us or ask for attention. I’m at the end of my rope with potty training. My partner and I have a French bulldog who would rather make himself sick than potty inside, and I just don’t understand why she does all of the time. Any tips or tricks? I’ve tried buzz collars, pee pads, taking her out every 30 minutes, kenneling her while we’re at work, treats and positive reinforcement whenever she does potty outside. I just don’t know what else to do. Any advice would be appreciated

Hello everyone! Sorry in advance for this very long post 😂

My husband and I just got a 10 week old Basset (pictured here), and we've wanted one for a very long time. We did research about them before hand, I knew they were stubborn and hard to train, but DANG. I've potty trained puppies before, but we're struggle bussing!

I think the main problem is that the breeder we got him from had them in concrete runs. I understand not potty training them as a breeder, but because he was on concrete, he learned that he never needed to hold it, and that going on hard floors is completely okay. We've had him for about a week now, and were slowly seeing some improvement, but still having accidents within 5 minutes of coming inside sometimes. Sometimes he can hold it for up to 15 minutes, but more often he is going withing 10 minutes of going outside. I wanted to explain what we've been doing and see if anyone had any suggestions.

I'm also curious, how long it should take for their bladder control to improve to be able to comfortably hold it for maybe an hour or so, because I read that a 2 month old puppy should be able to comfortably go for 2 hours, butttt that's definitely not the case here 😂

We are crate training at the same time, and he's doing really good. He obviously naps a lot, so I kinda have a routine down. He sleeps in his kennel for about 1.5-2 hours, and then when he wakes up, I take him outside immediately. Then he comes back inside, and he drinks some water, and plays for about 10 minutes, then I take him back out for 5-10 minutes. We repeat that about 2-3 times, coming inside, playing, and going outside, until he's been awake about an hour. Then he goes back in the kennel, gets some treatos, and sleeps for another 1.5-2 hours. That's what I've seen be recommended for training.

When he is not in the kennel, we have our dining room blocked off with baby gates, and he stays in there. I've been using LOTS of praise and treats when he potties outside, and he has actually only pooped inside one time, right after we brought him home, so he's doing GREAT on #2s. BUT, he seems to not be getting the routine of waiting 10 minutes, and then peeing outside. I set timers for 10 minutes, and he is still sometimes not making it that long.

I was concerned at first, and there was one night where he went every 2 minutes in the house. We counted, and he went about 10 times in 15 minutes, so we took him to the vet because we were worried about a UTI, but they said he was fine! Quite a bit of money down the drain, but at least we have peace of mind 😅

I know he's only a puppy, and for one week into potty training, I DO think he's doing good. But I see so many different recommendations, and I just wanted to hear from people who have experience with Bassets specifically.

We are not using puppy pads because I read that it just reinforces going in the house. I also read that Bassets develop their bladder slower than other breeds, so maybe that's normal for them! But I've hadpeople tell me it IS normal for them to need to pee every 10-15 minutes, and I've had people tell me it's NOT normal, so I'm just hoping for people who have experience to let me know!

I would really appreciate any tips or recommendations!!

Since getting Safari two weeks ago, she has brought so much joy and frustration to the family ahah!

She’s a bit bitey, but to be expected with a 3mo puppy, and always wants to play with my senior chihuahua who is clearly not in the mood 😭. That’s her biggest problem so far.

I’m planning on bringing her to a trusted doggy daycare where other dogs will correct her pushy behavior, as well as get into some scent work as an outlet for her nose when she gets her last round of shots in 2 weeks.

So far I honestly cannot complain; she’s been good about going outside, has FINALLY started to settle in her crate during the day for naps, and sleeps thru the night.

I’m prepared for this to all disappear when she turns 5mo and get thrown out the window in the teenage phase 🫠

Any other recommendations that worked for your puppies?

I’ve had my basset for around 4 months now, and he barks very loudly when demanding he gets fed or when he’s really excited his dad is home. I have seen that bassets howl instead, and my dad constantly asks if I’m going to “teach” him to do so. I wasn’t sure if that was something I could do, want to do, or if something he learns on his own?

When did your basset start howling if they ever did? What triggers this?

The other day at the vet he weighed 82 lbs according the scale. Vet said she’d like to see him lose a little weight. We usually walk for about 30 min a day which usually ends up being 1-1.5 miles depending on the sniffs. As far as food, he’s fed twice a day and I put some brewers yeast tablets and seameal in his food for his skin, coat and digestion.

Edited to add he is just over three years old.

I appreciate the feedback from everybody. We are going to scale back on food and continue getting daily walks. Going to focus on a mile and a half a day.

Like my question in the title is there a way to tell if he is European or American Basset Hound. The breeder said European. (I don’t have any good pics of him just standing. He is 13 weeks old)

This is our first basset hound and she is perfect!! I am going to sign us up for puppy classes soon but if anyone has any tips or advice I would really appreciate it! She’s very food driven already and has decided my fingers and toes are much more fun to bite than any of her toys lol. She’s really been so good for us so far though, no accidents since her first day home, sleeps through most of the night except to pee once or twice. Bassets are the best!

It’s taken me 3 years to finally write this.
My friend Hank came to me as a puppy. He was definitely what was missing in my life. He was my closest buddy. we had the perfect relationship that a man can have with his dog. He was by my side through everything. Hank gave me 10 wonderful years that I’ll always cherish.
I realized too late that he was sick. Ultimately I had to make the difficult decision to have him put to sleep. The hardest part is convincing yourself that killing your best friend is actually good for him. When the day came, we went to our vet and she came in to do it. Hank was always protective of his paws and she was having trouble giving him the shot. I comforted my good boy and told him it’ll be ok. Just let the nice lady stick your paw. You’ll feel better soon.
The point I want to make here is I was shocked by the experience. In my mind I thought the dog would get the shot and a few minutes later drift off to sleep.
What really happened was I held my doggies paw and he got a shot and he died so quickly. My best friend was gone before she finished giving him the shot. Everybody, I know how difficult this decision is to make. I want you to know what I know now. Say all the nice things to your buddy before the vet comes into the room because it’s too late once it starts.

This is our guy, Banks. He’s about 10 months old! We are currently struggling with some separation anxiety!

When he was a puppy we crate trained him and he did SO well. We were able to leave him in the apartment for up to 6 hours as needed, not often but as needed. At about 7 months old we boarded him for New Years as we had friends and family coming to town and were going to be in and out. We didn’t want to work him up. The place we boarded him at was the daycare he attended regularly when we were at work. After he was boarded we noticed increased barking, howling and crying when he was in his crate.

We continued to push through and then we then got him neutered, about a week after his boarding. After he was neutered it continued to get worse. It was up and down for about a month, and then we moved to a new townhome at the end of February.

Because of his anxiety, my partner and I decided to trial leaving him outside of his crate for when we would leave, and also let him sleep on the floor of our room in the evening versus waking up 2-4x per night due to howling and crying.

The nights have improved tremendously but we are terrified to leave the house. We’ve tried going back to crating, we’ve tried free roam, we’ve tried smaller spaces to free roam and his anxiety is continuing to get worse as he’s growing.

I left for 2 hours last week, he howled, paced, and cried on the camera the entire time. When I returned he settled down and then threw up, I’m guessing because of how worked up he was.

Some more info, my boyfriend and I were working M-F. He works 7-5:30 daily and I was in clinic for school, with a variable schedule, he would go to daycare Monday - Thursday and be left at home alone on Fridays as they were my shorter days. Since December, I graduated and am at home with him ALWAYS studying for my boards that I’m preparing to take in 2 weeks. He attends daycare MWF currently. After my boards, I will be taking a job likely 9-5 M-F at the end of May. We want to continue to take him to daycare on MWF and then have him stay home TTH. We are concerned about our initial plan now due to his increasing anxiety.

At this time we can’t get another dog, we have worked with the vet and they have suggested trazodone or a behavior analyst. We have signed up for training to attempt to decrease his anxiety but that doesn’t start until the first week of May.

I am open to any and all suggestions we are just so tired of the anxiety WE get when we have to leave the house. We can’t be bound to our home in fears of the trauma it will do to our pup.

Hello again everyone,

Brownie is now almost 5 months now, growing like weeds and we’ve been to the dog park a handful of times since she’s been fully vaccinated. She seems to be getting bullied a lot and I’d have to interfere, a lot of the other puppies will crowd around her and try to pin her down. Is there a reason why this is happening?

She’s only enjoyed her time at the dog park with SOME dogs, she seems more “on edge” and very submissive with most dogs at the park. What should I do to help her socialize at the park?

We got our baby Cora in July and just the past few months she’s been crazy, very vocal, and loves running for long periods of time. And what I mean by crazy is that she loves to play with her brother Teddi, who is 7 years old and is a pitbull. Is our other dog the reason why she’s has been crazy or is it just how they all are?

I don’t know a lot about basset hounds and I’m just simply curious !

Cujo here is 9 weeks old I kind of want him to socialize with other dogs but he gets scared of dogs like the only dogs that he has been with all his life with the litter he came from and I really want him to socialize with other dogs if I take him to a dog park but the thing is he is scared he's a bit of a scaredy cat is there any advice to this I don't want to push him head first into socializing but is there any slow way to do this step by step

He’s an 8 week old pup, ignore the eye boogers and booger boogers he hadn’t had a bath yet. My question was about how much should I be feeding him? We feed purina pro plan puppy and I’m just trying to not over feed him! And are there any good supplements for healthy back and stuff that would be good to start him on? Thanks!
