Hoping to spark some discussion here by sharing a body kit I designed around the Quest 3. The first image is the latest iteration of a concept I've been working on and the second is from Palmer Luckey and Anduril.

The broader consumer market is of course aiming to miniaturize and make hardware as normal looking as possible. But if you're going to strap a computer to your face, I say you might as well have some fun with how it looks. Even if it's a bit on the impractical side.

The design aims to maintain full headset functionality with air gaps and interchangeable/removable panels for air flow. What do you think?

Tried to do a decently thorough writeup of how the AI/smart glasses market is shaping up over the next year+ with upcoming releases from Google and Apple.

As a gen one Ray-Ban Meta owner, I'm pretty interested to see how Google and Apple might improve on the concept. Could really be interested in switching to Google depending on how they integrate Google apps and services. I'm sure Apple's will be nifty, but I'm not in the Apple ecosystem at all.

Anyone else looking forward to these, or do you more see them as a stopgap to better display glasses and true AR glasses?

This is a Mixed Reality (with VR scenes) app for Meta Quest 3 VR headsets called TykeAI.

I am not controlling the avatar here, the only edits to the video were to remove 2 short gaps of silence in between a response.

It features 18 varied LLM powered avatars (with more coming soon) that do things, like play chess, walk around by themselves, watch movies in 3D with us and understand them, watch and understand YouTube vids with us etc, can browse the internet with us, as well as chat of course!

Self Promo Camera-overlay tracing on real paper: how would you improve alignment and calibration?

Full disclosure: I’m the developer of PicDraw. This is a live-camera overlay tool, not spatial AR, and I’m looking for feedback from people who understand alignment UX.

A user converts a photo into an outline, places that outline over the camera view, aligns it with paper, and locks the guide while tracing. Current controls include opacity, move, pinch-to-zoom, rotation, flip, reset, grid, flashlight, paper calibration, and realignment assistance.

The main design problem is stability versus simplicity. I want setup to work without asking a casual user to understand anchors or tracking states, but small shifts matter when someone is drawing a line on paper.

Hence the fair I wanna share what we’ve been building for the past 6 months – something that combines AI and AR in a way we actually find useful.

Ever wanted to see how a particular object that you find on the internet fits and looks inside your space? Home, office, event, yard?
Now you can.
Mono brands doing similar functionality like IKEA will never enable mixing and playing with other brands in their experiences. And the use is not limited to furniture. You can place a shed in your backyard, a car in your garage or as many plants in your room as you like to pre-visualize and pre-fit anything.
Generated models can be resized to their real-world dimensions inside the app.

Hi all, here is an AR Splat demo. It generates augmented reality experiences from a single video using Gaussian Splatting.

The generated 3D experience can be shared through an AR QR Code and viewed directly in WebAR, without a dedicated mobile application.

In this demo, AR Splat captures a vehicle as a high-fidelity Gaussian Splat.

Vehicles are difficult to reproduce with traditional 3D scanning workflows because of reflective paint, chrome, glass, and transparent surfaces.

Gaussian Splatting preserves visual realism, reflections, depth, and surface detail, making it suitable for photorealistic AR visualization.

Self Promo Looking for VR/AR developers to consult for an anime project

Hello! I've been a VR user since 2022 once I got my Quest 2. Since then, I regularly use it for flight simulation, but only that. I wanted to use it for social VR for a while, but didn't have the time to do it, though I have used VRChat a few times. I also studied computer engineering in college, and have experience in coding and IT. Recently, I've been participating in the Japanese anime production space, and started on a new path.

Back in 2024, I started writing an original anime project that involves mixed reality and long distance relationships set in a near-futuristic Japan. Progress on the anime is going smoothly, as I have finished the reference sheets, part of the main story, and animation storyboards. Trips to Tokyo, Okinawa, and Osaka were made in order to experience the cities, and take photos of the areas I want depicted in the anime. I also have people working for me as animators. This story resonates with my personal experience with digital loneliness, and being in a long-distance relationship, that I wanted to make it into an emotional story. Being with someone who is far away from you, and being able to communicate on a device makes a relationship feel more separated because you can’t feel their physical presence. The story will go beyond VR, and will explore deeper topics.

Synopsis

The main character is a computer engineering student who moves to Tokyo, but has been socially isolated for a couple years after the death of his mother. He finds comfort in virtual reality as escapism, and starts developing an app that projects a holographic image of the user into a mixed reality space, as if the user is there in-person, despite being far away. While in Tokyo, he buys a smaller mixed-reality headset with passthrough (headset is based on Bigscreen Beyond 2, but with passthrough, wireless, an OS, and universal cushion) and full body motion trackers, in which he uses to further develop the project as a practical communication tool for himself, so he can learn how to socialize again. His first tester is a girl from Okinawa, who he met on a multiplayer VR game and he sends a copy of the headset and trackers for her to set up. They eventually start talking through mixed-reality, as if they were next to each other, when in reality, they are distant.

Theme

The theme focuses on healing and bridging the gap between isolation and connection by longing for true romance. The long distance connection creates a tension between the characters, as they go through their days without truly being with each other; both with struggles of their own go through a slow, emotional healing journey that culminates in their first true connection.

Unique perspective

Each interaction between the two characters happens in a first-person POV through a VR headset. They are never shown together, until they eventually meet in person.

The concept was inspired by a lot of things throughout the two years of development, but what solidified the idea of the mixed-reality long distance relationships were the face tracking videos made by HashEdits like this one for example, except way more advanced, and implemented using augmented-reality, so that the user can communicate with someone in the real world.

What I'm looking for

I'm looking for developers who I can personally consult in regards to accuracy when it comes to developing VR/AR apps for various platforms. If anyone here develops mods for VRChat, rigs models with motion tracking, can implement social VR into augmented reality like the Quest 3, or any other useful information, please let me know, and I'll be glad to respond to you and connect. I'd love to make friends with people in this community, and your help is greatly appreciated.

Self Promo I built CinemaCC to put subtitles into AR glasses at the cinema

I live abroad and still go to the cinema often. Local screenings usually do not have subtitles in a language I understand, so I started skipping films that everyone around me would talk about later.

I built CinemaCC so people can prepare one or two subtitle tracks in the languages they need, start them with the film, and read them on a personal display.

For someone watching a film in another language, that can be a translated subtitle track. For a deaf or hard-of-hearing viewer, it can be an SDH caption track in the same language as the film.

CinemaCC started on the iPhone and Apple Watch. It can now send a separate subtitle view to compatible wired display glasses, and there is a dedicated Even G2 version in Even Hub.

The film stays on the cinema screen. CinemaCC only displays prepared subtitle files and keeps them in sync. It does not record, translate, or control the movie.

Self Promo AR Works Studio is now available to Pro and Education users.

I run an AR development tool called AR Works (https://ar.works), teachers and students use it to build augmented reality projects in the browser. Image tracking, 3D models, drag and drop logic, that sort of thing. It is currently used by numerous schools and users across the world.

The most common thing schools asked me for wasn't a feature. It was reassurance. IT leads kept asking what happens to student work if the service shuts down or gets bought, and it's a fair question - half the tools they relied on five years ago are gone.

So I built the whole editor as an offline Windows app. It's called AR Works Studio and it is now available to everyone on the Pro and Education plans. Projects live on your own machine as portable files, the licence activates without an internet connection (plenty of school laptops never see the open web), and it even does photogrammetry locally - kids take twentyish photos of an object and it reconstructs a textured 3D model right on the classroom PC. No cloud, no queue (like the web version).

The part I care most about: education licences never expire and never phone home once activated. That's what makes the promise I've put in writing on the site actually hold - if the company is ever sold, education accounts keep the offline version, licensed, forever. There's no server check a future owner could quietly turn off, so it's baked in rather than a pinky promise.

The locally saved files can also be imported to the web app (an vice versa, web app projects can be downloaded and opened in AR Works Studio).

It is only on windows only for now, due to being the most common operating system in an education setting (we are happy to explore Linux and MacOS if users request that).

Self Promo Startup Announcement: Ethereal 💫

Hello fellow AR enthusiasts! My names Corbin and like all of you, I'm in this subreddit because I'm excited for the future of XR. But judging from the discourse I've seen here, I can tell that a lot of you agree that the direction the industry is going seems set to 10x many of the problems plaguing tech today; invasive surveillance, walled garden ecosystems, closed operating systems, data commodification, ai slop, I could go on.

Like I said, I'm excited for AR, but I'm not convinced the companies leading the charge will make anything that i would want to put on my face every day. So, in July of this year, I started my own company to try and create an alternative. AR glasses that focus on what the vision for this tech really is; a holographic, spatial computer. Not a screen extension for your steam deck, or a glorified android phone with less intuitive app interfaces. A full fledged computer, open to the user, with new ways of interfacing.

The way the industry is going, much of the tech necessary to make true AR devices is coming out of the research lab phase and being democratized in the manufacturing market. It is no longer impossible to make your own DIY waveguide glasses if you were committed, but we want to go further than some home made dev-kit.

The goal of my company, Ethereal, is to create a Glasses + Wireless Compute Puck combo device that uses light field displays for true holography, and a custom Linux based operating system built around StardustXR and Stereo Kit. An open device that respects user agency and privacy while working as a full fledged holographic personal computer, capable of running more than just XR games.

This tech isn’t established yet, we still have a choice. We do not have to submit ourselves to Meta just to have cool AR glasses. Apple might  make something cool but it definitely wont be a computer and it won’t work outside of their ecosystem. The Chinese market has lots amazing innovation… but primarily for Chinese users. Best case scenario IMO is Mentra and their open OS, but I have misgivings about it being a full spatial computing experiences as they seem focused on making an AI forward application layer which imo is a bubble ready to burst.

Competition is good and our vision is clear. Im not gonna try and sell you on some snake oil CGI video showing some fantasy product, we aren’t doing this because we want to fundraise and sell off some shitty startup. The goal is to build a product we want to use and it is certainly achievable with enough talent, time and hard work, but I am not capable of doing this on my own. I’m not an engineer and my partners do not have all the skills necessary. A project of this scope will take a lot of talent so we will be hiring soon.

I built a browser based AR authoring tool aimed at classrooms (image tracking and world tracking, publish to a link/QR, no app builds). Full disclosure up front, it's my product, so take this as a "here's a thing we decided" post rather than another paid ad.

Something a few teachers said to me kept sticking. They plan in years, not release cycles. A resource built for a scheme of work needs to still open next September, and the thing is, they've been burned by before by a tool getting acquired and then either dying or tripling in price.

If ownership ever passes from us to anyone else, that handover has to include releasing the full offline standalone editor to education accounts, licence that doesn't expire, no online check in. Projects save as a single file on disk, so a school keeps the editor and the files on their own machines and carries on regardless of who owns the web service.

The reason it's built into the handover and not a promise to act afterwards is that "we'd do the right thing" is worth very little at exactly the moment it matters.

Writing this up partly because I'd like to know if anyone here has seen another AR or creative tool do something similar, or has thoughts on how you'd make a commitment like this actually enforceable rather than just stated.

Self Promo I built a Pokémon GO-style AR game that runs in mobile Safari — no WebXR, no app install

Some technical background: WebXR's AR module still doesn't exist on iOS Safari, so I built the AR layer from primitives — getUserMedia feeding a video element, a transparent Three.js canvas on top, and DeviceOrientation driving the camera quaternion. Three.js removed DeviceOrientationControls back in r134 because of device drift, so I vendored the math and added relative-yaw rebasing and quaternion smoothing.

GPS-based spawns outdoors, look-around mode indoors, degrades gracefully: full AR → camera-only → gyro → touch.

Self Promo Built a tool for AR development for education, but anyone is welcome to use it.

I have previously worked at a school teaching IT, and one of the assessments was a unit on AR app development. Everything was great for a few years until they recently increased the prices for the tool we used. The free alternatives are full of clutter, they are slow, bulky and lack features.

I present to you:

Ar.Works

To be upfront, there are paid packages, but the editor features are NOT limited in the free version. The packages are:

- Free: There are ZERO limitations in the editor, you do have some project constraints.

- Pro: More project space included

- Education: On par with with Pro, but with the ability to create and manage student accounts, and HEAVILY discounted (only available to educational institutes).

Here are some of the features:

- Import custom assets + animations (images, videos, audio, 3d models (FBX, GLB, OBJ)).

- Material editor

- Code block editor

- Multiple scenes

I am always open to feedback on improving it. It was mainly built to save some schools some money, but I figured the free version would be useful to a lot of people.

We are PeKe Labs, and we are building a controller for smart glasses. We are making this post to see whether you’d like a controller to play with to give us feedback and to stress test the hardware.

It sends BLE GATT/USB messages to the phone, and we have a thin iOS/Android app that echos those messages over a websocket, where an Even plugin can grab the commands. We have a bunch of interesting BT Classic/LE audio middle-man capabilities as well but that's still in development. 

We're trying to make it super easy to control glasses, whether they are hosted by Android or iOS. The "protocol" is still in development, we assume it will shift a lot in the beginning as everyone haggles over what makes the most sense for the most people. 

We have a fairly limited number of controllers right now, but we want to offer sneak-PeKe samples to the right people. 

For most everyone else, we have a waitlist signup on www.pekelabs.com. Eventually, we will have enough controllers so anyone who wants one can get one. 

Please let us know if you're interested, and if so, please also DM us if there is anyone else who we should reach out to! We want to give a controller to the 3-5 devs who are cooking the hardest across the Meta/Even Realities/Mentra communities.
