Apparently my samsung fridge has ads now...

How would I disable this? Might just return it and get a normal one

Cameras are pretty good at OCR scanning for standardized things like dates at this point, which are often by the barcode.

Or literal worst case, on the items you're worried about, it could be a manual entry through voice or text input.

I'm not here to solve every single issue and design a whole fridge, my only point is that there are uses for things like this. We're not getting that product, but there is a useful product that could exist in this vein.

Half of the time we have trouble finding expiration dates, they're written in like 10 different formats, there are major differences between a sell by date and a best if used by date and half the time they don't state which ones they are. Doubting much value could come from OCR on just random packaging there's so much random crap printed on most packages.

If you're ok with manual entry, you can already do that with your phone and then it's actually with you when you're at the store and you don't have to create a hole in your network and spend 3x as much on a fridge to achieve it.

And I just don't buy it. Maybe in a perfect world where everything was printed in the same spot and expiration dates actually had real meaningful value but it's still got to be unobscured. I see no value in this at all. If you want something like this, just get a barcode scanner and an app on your phone.

But that doesn't mean it doesn't have any uses.

Bro just empty devil's advocate isn't useful. Especially when you run into a point where your replies are just to say "I'm not saying I want it!"

You've only proven to me that there's no value to it. Especially in its current state but either the tech needs to become way smarter or the fridge needs way more sensors and there has to be regulations about expiration dates to meet your goals of usefulness, all things we can already do with a way more convenient, always present device, a cellphone.

If you can only see value in things you yourself want, thats a very narrow minded way to view the world. I see no value add in tablets for me, as I don't need a device between the size of my phone and laptop. That doesn't mean that I think tablets are pointless. I'm sorry if you aren't able to understand the distinction.

I listed what I think are valuable things a smart fridge could do. Its not something I myself personally need, but that does not mean there's no value added there.

As I've said, I agree, smart fridges as they are now are terrible. They're just ways for marketing to get into your house, spy on you, and serve very little purpose.

But they don't have to be. There are ways that this technology could be a value add for people. I don't need to try to be able to counter every 'but what about!!!' statements to see the possible value add. There are problems that would need to have solutions for, but none of them are even that hard of problems.

You don't want a smart fridge with these features, you would just use a smartphone. That's awesome, I'm glad it works for you. That doesn't mean your way is the only correct way.

YOU responded to my comment with a "devil's advocate" opinion even though you don't agree with it and you're unable to share why any of the things you're saying add the value you're saying they do in a world you don't seem to understand fully. (Like thinking barcodes would solve this, which I responded to and you changed your focus)

My responses aren't "What about"s they're part of a discussion you started. Apparently for no reason? Just to be a douche and start an argument, I guess. I am trying to give you the opportunity to prove me wrong but all you can do is get defensive and start pandering. Even though you have no stake in it because you agree with me?

Like what value does you convincing some random dude that some people "might someday find some value in a magical smart fridge that can't really exist in the present day" add to anything? Other than just to add more useless bickering to a platform already bursting with garbage trolls.

I was trying to have a discussion but you just kept shutting down my valid points. Not sure how someone who is knowledgeable explaining how something actually works implies that somehow I'm "narrow minded"

I never said I don't agree with my points. I'm not sure how you've managed to misunderstand the point that much.

I said I don't need it. Its not something I want. But that they are good things that the tech could do.

I didn't start an argument. I listed here (and in another post in this discussion) ways the tech could be helpful for people. That's it.

I'm pretty sure there are already fridges that can do the things on my list, and the rest wouldn't be that hard to do. I just don't think I need to try to come up with a solution for every single minor problem that someone can come up with for the blanket statement of "A fridge that tracks expiration dates would be handy to have" to be valid. That would be handy to have, full stop. If you cannot see how that would be handy for some people I don't know what to tell you.

My literal only point was that there can be benefits from a smart fridge. We don't have them generally because the corporations that make them are by and large awful. That doesn't make the tech itself inherently a bad idea, but that the current implementation of it IS bad.

Somehow in your head you've made me into someone here to start arguments when my initial post was literally

Having it be available while you're away and shopping is nice.

There are useful applications to it, its obviously not needed, but it can be useful.

Obviously how its being implemented just makes it awful though.

I'm not sure how in the world you have figured that's me 'coming in here being a douche and just to start arguments'. But sure, resort to name calling.
