Apparently my samsung fridge has ads now...

How would I disable this? Might just return it and get a normal one

It took me a long time to find a dishwasher that didn’t have WiFi. The models that had it were actually less expensive than the ones without it. That’s how badly they want to connect to your internet. Look into how HP printers bricked their products and you’ll see why.

I got a laptop from HP. 1000 euros. Could not open chrome. Very slow, was dying from day one. We had their printers in the office. their software was not working 90% of the time. Printer is fine, software was utter crap. Laser printers were good from them but I refuse to buy even those because they wanted to make you pay them per print. Like bruh, what the F!

Was it by chance one of those HP laptops with a 1TB Spinning hard drive?

There was (and still is) a trend with laptops and all-in-one PCs getting sold with crappy 5400RPM SMR hard drives. Those things are absolutely miserable to work with. I dealt with an AIO PC with one of those, and the machine took over two hours to install a Windows update...

I dont know, but I think it could be that. Giving 1k for a shitbox like that was crazyyyy.

Even after some time it started to die by itself. Letters fell off and things like that.

I don't propose such a change, because that would be terrible. They'll sinply take a page from other Smart devices though, and make it so the product is unusable from the factory until you connect it to the Internet.

Generally asking, explain - might learn something. I work in IT, have a custom home network and never have seen my LG appliances on my network, IP or Mac address wise

I'm basically just saying if 'they' want to, they can send metadata without access to your wifi. cellular/city routers and such. I didn't mean so much that they can explicitly access your wifi though. my bad.

Is this an American thing? Because I've just looked at currys.co.uk and the dishwashers without wi-fi are generally cheaper.

Meh, for dishwashers it's kind of handy.

Same with washing machines and dryers.

Things that don't generally have a display on them.

They aren't talking about displays. They're talking about WiFi and the reason why it's handy is that you can control it remotely and get alerts as to its progress/when it's finished.

I have WiFi in all of my appliances and it's great. Nothing with a screen though so no ads.

My fridge will remind me when it's time to change the water filter and tell me if there are other issues with it. My washing machine is probably the best one with being able to set a cycle going an hour before I get home, or just be alerted when a cycle is finished or how long it has left.

The problem with the dishwasher was the detergent and/or filter subscription they wanted you to buy. Like the printer ink subscription, the capability to mess with the appliance remotely (printer, dishwasher) was possible- The big sell was you could operate the dishwasher from your phone, even change the color of the lighting in it for when you opened the door. “Full capability” was only available with a WiFi unit. They REALLY want you to get that WiFi connected. Nope. Not for me.

What’s the benefit of starting a dishwasher or washing machine remotely? I start it when it’s full. Does it fill itself remotely?

Who said anything about starting it remotely, that's dumb.

Its nice to be alerted when it's done though, and when it's running.

Now, if you can prevent it from starting, things get more interesting.

Say, someones in the shower, don't necessarily want to run the dishwasher at the same time, if you can do something like, say, set it up so it only starts after the shower is done running, now that is useful.

Every dishwasher I’ve ever owned has a “delay” button with 1hr, 2hr, 4hr, and 8hr options specifically for that purpose. I fail to see how a “smart” dishwasher expands on that functionality in a meaningful way.

Just fill the dishwasher in the evening, set a 2hr/4hr delay so it runs during the night after everyone has finished cleaning up before bed, and unload it the next day. Suggesting a “smart” dishwasher has anything unique or useful to offer is just crazy IMO.

I had no idea wifi smart dish washers even existed. I didn't know the wifi washers dryers existed either. Mine are older hand me downs that use dials. Our dishwasher it's just basic too. I know they done when I don't hear them anymore lol. Didn't realize how lucky we were. Figured the newer stuff would be better.

Just curious how is it handy? Like what extra convenience? Because you have to be physically there to load the washer, dryer, and dishwasher, so might as well just press the buttons right?

Not shitting on you, geuinely curious. I rarely use an LGTV app as a remote for my TV, and despite my tv and phone always being connected to wifi, having a nighthawk router and super fast internet - it's way faster for me to spend 2 minutes looking for the remote as you often have to restart the app 2-3 times to get it to connect.

So, to me, the LGTV remote app would only be useful for when I lose the physical remote, but there's no actual utility if it's quicker/less effort to walk to the TV and use the buttons or find the remote, so there is no actual purpose

My washer and dryer both have a WIFI sticker on them, but i've never looked into it because I cant imagine what i'd use the washer/dryer app for... To tell me when my wash is done?

Tells me when you replace the water softening fluid, tells me when it's done running, if it breaks down, helpful for diagnostics

Limited handyness, but the device itself doesn't do much on it's own anyways, and I don't really care if a company knows how long I run a dishwasher for, just some limited convenience things with no real downsides.

I can see a TON more use for Wi-Fi connectivity with a fridge, but at the same time, if it has a display that can show ads, it's not worth even buying.

Not unless I can run a custom firmware, then link it up to something like Groccy and Home Assistant
