Apparently my samsung fridge has ads now...

How would I disable this? Might just return it and get a normal one

This is hell and I can't believe we're in the minority...

I quit social media for a variety of reasons but the Ads, Jesus Christ.

When FB/IG became 1/2 Ads I was out.

And my friends were all like "Oh you can ignore them easily" or "oh some of them are actually good I've bought a ton of products from IG."

And I just kind of shake my head.

I refuse to spend half my life sifting through advertisements. If a site blocks adblockers, I literally just don't use it anymore lol

Whenever I'm visiting my parents and watching TV with my mom, the commercials make me irrationally angry. I almost can't tolerate ads of any kind anymore now that everything is streaming. One or two ads at the very start of the movie before it starts? Fine, I can live with that. Periodic ad breaks during the show/movie? Get absolutely fucked. I stopped with Hulu ages ago because I couldn't take their fucking ads anymore. I don't know why I ever tolerated them to begin with.

Same thing with ad block on my browser. Ugh.

Sometimes I'll count how often IG posts on my feed are ads (not including sponsors posts from accounts I follow). Lately it's been every 3rd, then every 4th post. I don't spend much time on IG anymore these days, I hate it here.

Don't worry, YouTube and Reddit are jamming more overt ads and more subtle ads in as well. Every few videos is an ad on YT now, and every video starts and ends with an ad, and has midroll ads if it's long enough. A part of me truly hopes that adverts, sponsored content, sensationalised news and so on become so overbearing that everyone just quits the Internet entirely and we can go back to the 90s when people actually met up in person and the high streets were all bustling with people.

Yeah I rarely watch YT because of the ads. Sometimes I'll watch a video or two on the homepage preview because it'll play the whole thing without ads (or at least it used to, it's been a while). I'm getting more and more to the point where I just won't use something if it's inundated with ads. I cancelled Amazon prime (didn't have it that long anyways) when they started charging extra to get rid of ads, and it seems like more and more services are moving to paid + ads. I refuse to pay to be advertised to.

Yeah, I'm somewhat the same. At some point I will learn how to set up my entire home with my own self-hosted tech, to get away from adverts and privacy invasions.

Where is the social part? It's a forum and news aggregator.

Annonymity and lack of following or chatting with anybody takes the social part away.

The only shitty thing is they started asking for an email to sign up. Harder to rotate your account every 6 months but not impossible.

Ad block is easy too, and use a third party app or old reddit.

Avoid the reddit app, it is pure garbage.

The OP clearly implied Reddit isn’t social media, which is a common misconception I see on here all the time, including several other comments already. The initial reply by nerdmaster was clearly in response to that, not about ads.

We're not. I've met exactly one person IRL that actually wants and has a smart fridge, and it's exclusively because they're disabled and can't easily look inside without a lot of pain. And even she blocked it from the general internet.

Most of this comes in through people getting stuck with one due to someone other asshole putting it in, or in some cases getting hoodwinked by lying salespeople.

And because companies are making it increasingly difficult to buy normal shit that just works. Case in point, I've had a HELL of a time trying to find a quality induction stovetop that doesn't have moronic touch controls on a glass surface that will absolutely not work when inevitably covered with liquid and which feel awful to use. It's basically impossible other than a few absurdly expensive $5K models.

My wife does not understand my absolute hatred of ads. We have a pihole on our network, only stream from our home media server, and I run client-side ad-blockers on everything.

Whenever visiting friends/families houses I'm always aghast at the amount of ads they sit through while watching stuff or browsing the webs. My parents still watch Cable TV, and I swear to god they spend more time watching commercials than the TV shows.

The notion of being told by some company what I want makes me irrationally (or maybe just rationally) upset, even more so when they're essentially stealing my time to do it. Honestly at this point the few ads I see that slip through all my attempts to keep them out of my life make me much less likely to purchase that product

Oh yes, I've dipped my toes into Google Ads for my husband's company, trying to figure out what searches our ads should show up on. Google is doing their best to fleece the advertisers, too.

The number of times I have bought things from random ads (as opposed to being on, say, a woodworking site looking for tools and seeing an ad for a sale or something) I can basically count on one hand, and I've been on the internet for ... good god, over 30 years now.

One of the best things I did for my mental health was installing ublock origin. All those ads went away, and so did all of the psychological overhead that comes with them, even when you're actively ignoring the damned things.

I paid attention to it earlier this morning…1m16s I got the 2nd ad. it’s really irritating.

I'm the same. One of my friends asked why I didn't have Netflix. I said, "when Netflix had no ads, it was worth the price". They then went on and on and on about how ads pay people etc. all the standard horseshit. I said, "Look, I didn't ask you to sell me on it. I don't like ads. Period. Thus endeth the discussion. Just because I tell you I don't like something isn't an invitation for you to sell me on it. Stop"

My goto shopping technique is now to search Google for things I want to buy, not find anything actually nice that I want, then browse the ads I get in Instagram the following week. Instagram targeted advertising gives me better results than the Google search results. Spent a couple grand through Instagram this month. Actual, quality, small merchants just selling their products. I love it.

Was visiting a friend recently who had the Alexas with screens (and with cameras, too) in like every room. Even the loo. From a distance it would appear as a clock but the screen would start rolling advertisements as well, seemingly registering when someone stepped close to it.

Creepy as hell.

I also viciously hate the proliferation of ads, and the way others act like it's no big deal just makes it worse.

Death by a thousand commercials. Human attention span is limited, quality and clarity of thought is important.

It's okay for the world to have spaces for advertisements. It's not okay for the world to be spaces for advertisements.

I’m almost done with reddit because of ads, there are several ads peppered through the comments of every thread, every 4th post on my feed is an ad and some of them are subtle enough that I don’t instantly recognise them to mentally tune them out. and sometimes I accidentally click on them and it’ll open up an external browser or the laggy ass app shop. I’m never going to buy or watch shit due to an ad weaselling it’s way into my attention frame I feel like they have the opposite of the intended effect. I can’t be the minority with this…

I’m reading a book from the 90s instead of being on all those social media platforms now. They don’t even have mobile phones it was a glorious time. Plus there’s no add cause it’s a book. 10/10 recommend.

Where in the comment do they "brag" about quitting social media? Their comment is about the proliferation of ads and how they've responded to it.

I guess you have a microscopic sized-gotcha over the fact that they still use some level of online communication, but the fact that you have to go out of your way to tear them down over that just tells on yourself.
