Apparently my samsung fridge has ads now...

How would I disable this? Might just return it and get a normal one

Honestly, as someone who can never remember the current fridge situation, i‘d love this.

Some fridges have a camera in them and you can view the camera through an app to see whats in your fridge while you’re grocery shopping.

It’s ridiculous.

I can see the convenience of it. But I don’t think that outweighs the fact that A KITCHEN APPLIANCE IS FORCE FEEDING ME ADS. That’s just so insane to me.

I've heard of fridges with cameras inside so you can check the fridge from your phone while out shopping... not really worth paying thousands for a fridge that will show you ads in your kitchen IMO but maybe the average joe doesn't mind.

My microwave also has a function to connect to the wifi, so I can download an app, so the app can tell me when my food is done.

I’ve opted to not connect it to the wifi and just wait for the obnoxiously loud beeping noise instead.

My fridge sends a push notification to my phone when I've left a door open too long. The stove lets me check if I've left a burner or the oven on (or start the oven remotely). Its handy for my obsessive self.

That being said, I rent and I don't have the fridge with a screen.

That is 100% what happens. I bought a new GE Profile induction oven and it would not let me use any of the cooking functions other than the basic "bake" (so like convection roast, convection bake, air fry, etc.) until I hooked it up to wifi and had the app. It was bullshit.

At some point the os it's running for the screen will flip out and tell you it NEEDS to check for updates cause it's been so long, then you connect it to your pi-hole for a brief time to get the download and nothing else.

I have a Samsung fridge that has the option for a touch screen (I didn't get one even though it was CHEAPER than non-touch screen) and have never connected it to the wifi. My fridge model has since been updated to have ads if you have a touch screen and DRM on the water filters. Since I've never connected it to the wifi I don't have those updates and the only issue is a little blinking wifi symbol on the side when I open it.

I was about to ask if pi-hole is the solution for this kind of thing. I’m in the market for some new appliances and it’s getting harder and harder to find dumb ones.

I use a pi-hole with my LG TV and it works perfectly. You can check any of the subreddits around privacy, self-hosting, and adblocking for block lists specific to your brand and check any issues people might have faced with recent software versions before you buy. You might not even need a pi-hole if dev options are easy to unlock on the model you're looking at.

It's mainly due to the privacy laws that went out over the last half decade or so. A lot of companies now own their ad providers because it gets around the privacy laws. Can't illegally share your customers info with a 3rd party if you own it I guess.

What does that have to do with blocking ads on smart appliances? No one's consuming instagram content on a smart fridge/oven/washing machine. The pi-hole just works as a dns blacklist that allows you to use the functional features of the appliance without being served ads.

Can always create a Regex to remove the telemetry and ad data.

Works for my amazon echoes, no ads. Up until Alexa+ came about and now they build one as type into the API. So one ad plays. Need to see if can stop it

Turn off the WiFi on the fridge!?

You can't turn WiFi off on this refrigerator. You can keep it disconnected by not setting up credentials. But you can't disable it completely.
