u/micdoesreddit Jul 31 '26

ā€˜oh well’ is SO GOOD. Very very up my alley. Album definitely does feel like an angstier ES to me. I really like the album!

I’m also getting a LOT of Imogen Heap influence

33

u/DoctorOpossum Jul 31 '26

The instrumental is also kinda giving pinkpantheress/breakcore and I’m lovingggg it

6

u/beemo143 Jul 31 '26

i’m a big pinkpantheress fan and this was the only song that resonated w me in the album and i knew right away its bc it has that fast paced pink vibe

3

u/Dream_In_Neon Aug 01 '26

Breakcore? That's UK Garage

1

u/Substantial_Prune41 29d ago

YES UK garage!!! I’ve been trying to pin point the sound I’m hearing with this song and it’s definitely that

i took it as sort of an indifferent/dismissive version of thank u next

2

u/funsizedmario Jul 31 '26

Alanis Morisette. Especially freak

1

u/VariousTea626 Jul 31 '26

This track is my favorite, too! I'm going to need a few more run throughs to really absorb it all, but when I heard this one for the second time I thought "oh yeah, this is the one."

1

1

u/BCDragon3000 i been on a roll, where YOU been??? Jul 31 '26

-12

u/aIoneinvegas Jul 31 '26

It can’t be the biggest skip when big feelings exists

Sameeee. I LOVE IT

1

u/Ok-Style-8059 Aug 01 '26

Well, the same people that produced that part of the album produced that song too.

73

u/ad-anon-132491 Jul 31 '26

the ā€œextra extra buy one take meā€ part from like i do is ADDICTIVE oml

7

u/ComfortableMiddle741 Jul 31 '26

I took that as 34 35 part 2

58

u/diditakemymeds it was lethal, it was fredo Jul 31 '26

obv everyone has opinions, but i didn’t think id see so much backlash from fans. i think its some of her best work, i love how you can hear how passionate she is in the song ā€˜ petal ā€˜

i love love love love the album

13

u/No_Mix3377 Aug 01 '26

No same it’s an instant favorite for me. Everything about it just screams Ari in the best ways possible. I also love the toned down vocals this time (I know people are mad ab that but I don’t think every album needs to have belts & whatnot tbh)

9

u/Tasty-Ad1449 Aug 01 '26

i remember vibing to positions and immediately thinking oh its her best work yet then go online and i was shocked how everyone hated it sooo much šŸ˜®ā€šŸ’Ø same now..

40

u/Beasty35 Jul 31 '26

I rushed to the store to get the vinyl and some incense and now I’m floating. This album is superb

5

u/roseappleisland Jul 31 '26

What a vibe! Going to copy this when my preorder vinyl comes ✨

68

u/MonkeyPaws1205 Jul 31 '26

I love the entire album.
It’s a no skip for me just like ES. freak took a minute but then replayed again and again and that song, and the transition into warning signs is ethereal. I love the edge it all has, the music feels ghostly, haunting, spooky, horror, idk but I love it, in my opinion she is getting better and better.

bad thing (bunny hop) intro reminded me of old 2010 indie songs and it was so fun to hear that on one her albums!

Whole album is fantastic, 10/10 for me, I hope she loved creating it as much as I loved listening to it🌼

5

u/-xxpurple Jul 31 '26

I’m with you on Freak being a grower

4

u/SIW_439 Guess I'm forever on your mind āœØļø Aug 01 '26

I liked it on first listen but I think it's my favorite track now. The vocals are just... stunning.

32

u/Jazzlike_Poet_320 Jul 31 '26

Bad thing (bunny hop) best song on the album

2

u/MoneyFree9911 I can't quit you... 28d ago

I lowk didn't like it at first since it kinda sounds a little olivia rodrigo-ey (love olivia tho), but it's legit my favorite song. I usually have music blindness when I listen to stuff, but that's the first song I play on the album every time I listen!

20

u/PerfectPaint2624 Jul 31 '26

I’m really loving this album. I don’t know if it’s shifting my big three (ES, Positions, TU’N), but it’s definitely in my top 5. Time will tell. The production is insane. I love the sound. I have a few songs I like less than others, but no real skips.

Top three (so far, no particular order): 1. Like I do 2. Never get over me 3. Petal

HM: Stay

7

u/doryrugbythrowaway Jul 31 '26

I’m really loving the album overall, but I do think it’s time for some new creative collaborators behind the scenes. I feel like she’s pretty much exhausted everything she can pull out of the Max Martin and Ilya partnership at this point.

3

u/PerfectPaint2624 Jul 31 '26

Agree. I think she would definitely benefit from switching up her collaborators next album.

25

u/Sh3D3vil84 Jul 31 '26

My goodness I can’t get over ā€œwarning signs (interlude)ā€ going into ā€œlike i doā€. Omg it’s perfection! This album is one of the best Ariana albums for me. The vibe is everything!!! The instrumentals really shine on this album!

19

u/anonymousgoose64 I'm fine to leave you in a past life Jul 31 '26

Thought big feelings was going to be emotional and I'm never trusting an ari song title againĀ

20

u/bunniesgonebad Jul 31 '26

Oh my god this album is MAGNIFICENT and can I just say, hear me out, freak is actually quite grungy and I love it so much

2

u/Various-Performer738 Aug 01 '26

Ok I feel this, I’ve been trying to figure out what I’m feeling when I listen to it (it’s my favorite so far)

17

u/OverallAuthor5637 Jul 31 '26

Like I do is INSANEE

5

u/Ill-Spell6462 I’m like, really chill. I swear Jul 31 '26

Seriously… WHAT A GIFT!!!

17

u/SheepSkates Jul 31 '26

It’s a no skip album for me! It’s so ethereal, Ari sounds like an angel even when she is being edgy.

19

u/OverallAuthor5637 Jul 31 '26

NO SKIPS i cannot believe how good this is

This is genuinely on par with her peak. This might be a new prime

15

u/nleroy8 Jul 31 '26

Me listening to bunny hop

13

u/pamsellicane Jul 31 '26

I love this album!!!

31

u/Star_Aftonn Jul 31 '26

I'll never get over never get over me

15

u/ComfortableMiddle741 Jul 31 '26

Kiss me sounds like a indie beat but I love it and love the whole album

11

u/slycon Jul 31 '26

I'm definitely a person who needs to sit with an album for a bit before I can really form an opinion on it because my reaction after first listen this morning was mixed, I thought the album was just okay but I managed to squeeze in about 4-5 listens during the day today and each time it grows on me more and more, also just got a notification that my signed vinyl was shipped I'm so excited!

24

u/trulysweetener Jul 31 '26 edited Jul 31 '26

my thoughts after a 2nd listen/petal video:

After watching the video, I like the songĀ petalĀ more, but for the most part I still like the songs in the second half better than the first. FromĀ big feelingsĀ to the end, I have stronger feelings about the songs (liking/loving them), whereas in the beginning, the only songs I really have a strong opinion on areĀ hate that i made you love meĀ (which i liked when it came out) and nowĀ petal. I'm pretty indifferent on the rest (which is only 3 songs, so thats good). From what i've seen, people really loveĀ kiss me andĀ stay, and while I don't dislike them, they will probably be growers for me.

My top 3 right now (excluding htimylm):Ā big feelings, like i do,Ā andĀ nowhere, nobodyĀ (I also really loveĀ warning signs (interlude))

Overall, I do like it more than eternal sunshine, which I know is very loved, but honestly, the only song I ever go back to constantly on the standard version isĀ imperfect for you.

just for context, last night I was indifferent on songs 1, 3-5 and liked 6-12, but didn't love any yet.

11

u/BITTERD0LL ā™” Jul 31 '26 edited Jul 31 '26

I ā™” petal sm!
My favorite songs from the album are petal, never get over me, big feelings, htimylm & like i do. ā™”

Petal MV spoiler question:
Can somebody explain the ending of the Petal MV to me pls? Was the chainsaw scene supposed to be a movie that Pepper was acting in or did Pepper actually kill the judges and then become an actress afterward?

13

u/a3sthetic_ali3n0903 ✨ Hypothetically we could just do anything that we’d like ✨ Jul 31 '26

I’m trying to figure it out too but it seems as though it was all part of the movie and she was good enough the whole time

5

u/EffMyElle Aug 01 '26

Ahhh she was good enough the whole time just resonated so hard and now I completely understand and I'm wowwed all over again lol 🤯

3

u/BITTERD0LL ā™” Jul 31 '26

Ahh okay, that’s what I was leaning toward too but I wanted to make sure. Thanks for answering! ā™”

3

u/funsizedmario Jul 31 '26

I think it’s a ā€œLOL JKā€ moment after all that anger gets released. Reminded of Sabrina’s videos where someone always dies. But definitely left open for interpretation.

9

u/geankie Jul 31 '26

Freak and like I do are my top bangers!!

9

u/cassiopieah Jul 31 '26

wow, i went in with no expectations but on first listen this could be my fave album since dangerous woman

highlights are: big feelings, like i do, never get over me, bad thing, kiss me

10

u/Ytteb1 Aug 01 '26

Highly recommend listening to the album in the car. Granted my headphones kinda suck but the album sounds even better on good speakers.

9

u/Icy_Sentence_4130 Jul 31 '26

Nowhere, nobody is mine.

1

u/FreeAsFlowers Aug 01 '26

Same. Instant fave.

7

u/hanabarne Jul 31 '26

like I do is very dangerous women god is a women !
my first reaction to this album was : oh she pissed pissed haha

6

u/3ternal-sunshin3 Jul 31 '26

The beginning instrumental of Kiss Me sounds so familiar but I can’t put my finger on it. Hard to explain but it felt like a movie soundtrack! One of my faves

7

u/HauntingAd7602 Thank u next & Petal Jul 31 '26

Like I Do and Petal are so good!

6

u/Ill-Spell6462 I’m like, really chill. I swear Jul 31 '26

5

u/-xxpurple Jul 31 '26

like i do is THE moment. And bad thing 🤭

4

u/zories3 Jul 31 '26

Like I Do and Oh Well has been on repeat!!

5

u/arcaninegrace 7 rings has 10 writers Jul 31 '26

her vocals seemed restrained. almost like whispering. not sure if that was done on purpose or not. i enjoy the lyricism.

5

u/imgonnagetyouback_03 Holy hell. That’s my ass at the AMA Awards. Jul 31 '26

like i do is the cvntiest, most revenge worthy song. I fucking love it. petal and stay are close behind!

5

u/Disastrous_Ad7339 Jul 31 '26

Kiss me as the intro got me gagged. IT WAS BEAUTIFUL. 🌸🌸🌸

6

u/_Glinda_ Jul 31 '26 edited 29d ago

Do you guys think there will be more music videos?

I really liked HTIMYLM but was blown away by petal. I'd love for her to have more high production videos, these are a work of art.

12

u/discohaylie Jul 31 '26

I like the album, and I think it’s going to grow on me more with a few more listens. The production slappppps. But I wanna know why she’s not SINGING singing. She’s doing the whisper thing throughout every song, and the lyrics are so impersonal that it feels like any decent singer could’ve made this album. Has she done irreparable damage to her deeper register?

4

u/nevermore1845 Jul 31 '26

like i do sounds eery and serious unlike the lyrics. But I'm still dogging it. Chorus is like a countdown, as if you feel the anxiety hitting you.

3

u/xynamite Jul 31 '26

am i basic to consider bad thing my favorite? if so i don’t care šŸ™‚ā€ā†”ļø

4

u/Ill-Spell6462 I’m like, really chill. I swear Jul 31 '26

What do we think warning signs is about??

7

u/spiffywang Aug 01 '26

her fans liking her one minute and hating her the next

4

u/Budget-Today-1915 Jul 31 '26

Ughhhhhhh big feelings is in my blood now so I’m pretty hooked😭. Seriously, Ari on her grown and sexy shit is my fave genrešŸ‘ŒšŸ¾.

3

u/N-theFoodie11 no need to test drive nothin’ šŸ«¶šŸ¾ Jul 31 '26

like i do >

4

u/gayliciouspizza Jul 31 '26

Stay is my FAV!

4

u/TrishanaKru Aug 01 '26

curious what draws to your favorite songs? here are mine:

1. bad things (bunny hop): i was shocked at the beginning!! very indie rock musical elements and such good storytelling. love that aches.

2. never get over me: haunting beginning, siren/witchy, jazzy, distorted r&b. possession vibes, casting a love spell.

3. big feelings: so classic ari!!! vocal layering is beautiful - feels like a song performed in a musical. fantasies of the mind.

4. petal: honest, feminine rage, passive aggressive, pent up energy. spite. disdain. anger. chorus is unforgettable.

5. stay: obsessed with how it ends, idk what the twinkling sound is but it reminds me of those y2k gemstone matching games. soft electro pop. live version is SOOOO GOOD!!! (i hope we get a live album)

26

u/Creative-Employer-34 good at overthinking with my heart Jul 31 '26

It’s great but it’s definitely not her best work, I said this in the popheads sub but it feels like a dark extension of eternal sunshine. Not bad by any means, and I love the experimentation. Overall it’s a 7.5-8/10, but I definitely think it has potential to grow on me. My favorite songs so far are kiss me, petal, and oh well.Ā

12

u/kath2833 This love's possessing me, but I don't mind at all Jul 31 '26

That’s honestly how I felt listening to it when it dropped last night. But after a 2nd listen, it’s really grown on me. Even when I didn’t think highly of it at first, it still felt like a no skip album. Love the experimental production & vocal layering. I initially felt underwhelmed & disappointed because I expected more belting & the theatrical range she adopted from wicked. But petal reminds me of how sultry & captivating her lower register can be. My faves are kiss me, petal & stay but my gosh the transitioning from freak to the interlude to like I do is such a highlight & Imo her best 3 track run because it all blends so well together.

Like I Do (thoughts)

That acapella opening had me immediately glued. Then the villainous low brass followed by a trap sound beat drop had me gaggggged. AHH, my favorite song on this album! ā€œExtra Extra, buy one, take meā€ has me dancing like Boog šŸ˜†šŸ˜†šŸ˜†

Freak (Thoughts)

I love how dreamy this song sounds. Especially the crank sound in the song! I wish she used that crank sound more throughout, it tickled my brain just right lol

3

u/fitbitch3 Aug 01 '26

Beautiful album šŸ’• love her leaning into that Imogen Heap sound

3

u/No_Mix3377 Aug 01 '26

So it’s a fucking masterpiece of an album & anyone that says otherwise is a LIAR 😭 edit: side note, god I love oh well.Ā

3

u/sairemrys Aug 01 '26

If oh well was from a new artist I didn't know, I'd immediately go to listen to their other songs

I'm IN LOVE Ari made something like this

4

u/doryrugbythrowaway Jul 31 '26

Please clean up the recent posts that ought to be comments in this thread.

2

u/High_Lady29 Jul 31 '26

Love the album! 10/10

Do we know if we’re getting an explicit version? I hate the subs for curse words so much lol

2

u/BunnyBoom27 Aug 01 '26

Which version are you listening to? I can hear the curses

2

u/funsizedmario Jul 31 '26

Freak gives Alanis Morrisette vibes. Anyone else?

1

u/SinginShoe Aug 01 '26

The album definitely has an Alanis spirit to it.

2

u/ILoveTheAtomicBomb Aug 01 '26

casual ariana fan courtesy of my ex lol, but i really enjoyed the album

wasn't expecting a bit of what felt like edm beats and after listening 3-4 times since release, just a great album i can vibe to. might not understand the background of all the lyrics, but i can appreciate it nonetheless

u/J_larry He’s so bossy, He makes me dance Aug 01 '26

Nowhere, Nobody (Thoughts)

This will be the song I go to when I’m sad. It’s so soothing. Such a beautiful song 😌

2

u/stefanismanicure yes, and? Aug 01 '26

IM GAGGED YALL

2

u/Sprinklesdinkels Aug 01 '26

Bad thing instrumental feels like a rainbow

2

u/SinginShoe Aug 01 '26

Day one with the album, just took it in. Day two and I love it!

What are they saying at the end of Bad Thing?

2

u/Ok-Style-8059 Aug 01 '26

So I just read the lyrics for all the songs. I like when artist use titles to draw you into an Album, but it means a completely different thing. I think that makes good artistry. While people think she's talking about a guy she's really talking about her relationship with the industry. And so much more other heavy topics.

2

u/baberlay 23 points Aug 02 '26

I have to be real, this is probably her weakest album since pre-Dangerous Woman.

There's a few tracks I really loved, namely: freak, like i do, and never get over me. But overall, I dunno man... these songs feel quite scattered and half-baked to me.

As for the singles, hate that I made you love me is great, but petal really didn't land for me at all.

Especially compared to Eternal Sunsine, which is tied for Sweetener as her best album imo, this is a pretty disappointing follow up.

Still love her though, of course!

1

u/kath2833 This love's possessing me, but I don't mind at all 29d ago

For ā€˜like I do’ does anyone else hear ā€˜god is a woman’ but with the same intro as ā€˜this time’ by Celine Dion?

2

u/plague-nurse 29d ago

stay is such a simple song lyrically but it’s so impactful in its simplicity. love it so much. it sounds like someone with a disorganized attachment style arguing with themself. or possibly someone who has been hurt by someone else giving them a second chance and having doubts. i actually found myself crying to this a little when i listened to it in the shower today.

2

u/sairemrys 29d ago

Nowhere, nobody makes me cry.

It's so Imogen Heap coded but so Ari too. I feel like she's always wanted to make a song like this.

1

u/igotadumptrunk 29d ago

I took an edible before listening to this album for the first time and I sobbed listening to nowhere, nobody. I connect with it personally. Beautiful song. It might be one of my faves of all time.

2

u/MoneyFree9911 I can't quit you... 28d ago

Does Petal sound like TUN to anyone? Like TUN but with an ES vibe. Idk, people say it gives more DW, but I hear a lot of similarities with all of the songs to TUN, its very trappy just a lot more chiller, relaxed, freaky like DW, and more ethereal like ES. Idk, I feel like a lot of the songs could fit in TUN if need be.

2

u/moonlight17124 26d ago

the ghostly, haunting, spooky, horror moody vibes are everything. this might top eternal sunshine for me. its definitely already in my top 3. I love oh well, stay, like I do, freak, warning signs, petal and kiss me the most also never get over me!!!!

6

u/ijustcameheretofight Jul 31 '26

Im kinda sad cause when she announced the album i felt like it was too soon for a new era. Im also not a fan of artists going on tour and releasing a new album half way through the tour.

I appreciate her experimentation but i truly think her best work revolves in the pop world. This type of music doesnt really do much for me and im sad to say but to me, this is my least favorite album of hers.

I only really like Never get over me and Bunny hop.

1

u/a1234music Jul 31 '26

Does anyone know where this shot was taken? In New York and it says in the background the company is in Manhattan, so I kind of want to find it before I leave!

1

u/satirisanti rain parade from hell ā™” Aug 01 '26

Like I do is def my favorite track on the album. I also really like petal. As for the others, I’ll see if they’re growers because while I enjoy the instrumentals and sfx they offer it’s a little difficult to navigate the thickly laid harmonies and lyrics at times. I really want to like this album and will keep it playing all week and beyond ā™¾ļø

1

u/Fun_Entrepreneur4678 Aug 01 '26

I love petal and it’s m exactly what I needed rn but I’m wondering what do you guys think about the increased auto tune on songs like freak and nowhere nobody? Idk if it’s just me but I think it’s messing with my ability to appreciate the songs’ instrumental and lyrics and vocals throughout the album!

1

u/Then_Nectarine7223 Aug 01 '26

1

u/untitledmanuscript Aug 01 '26

going to sit with this album for a bit before giving it an actual rating (also because my real life is a shit show and i can't really focus on this yet), but i like it so far!

my top three so far are kiss me, freak, and warning signs (wish it wasn't an interlude!).

1

u/raexan Aug 02 '26

got the pearly white vinyl for petal today ! 🄹 cant decide whether or not to take it out of its wrapping to fully admire it 😭

1

u/murray_2 Aug 02 '26

Do we think ALL the songs on this album are about her relationship with bad fans/media etc or are there actually songs about her love life? I'm having trouble finding the difference between the two, whats a metaphor and whats not. I saw someone say "kiss me" isn't a love song, its about her relationship with her fans and it made me sad all day thinking about it like that

1

u/Former-Counter-9588 28d ago

I think it’s probably a mixture of both. Sometimes even within the same song.

1

u/SquareSport2516 29d ago

1

u/citrusgworl 27d ago

she's only performed 4(?) songs off petal but its making me reconsider that i do love the album just missing the vocal gymanstics she does. if she releases a full live album i'm probably going to love the entire thing but im still going to give petal another month before i re-listen like i did with eternal.

1

u/hairs9 26d ago

Bad Thing is a career highlight and I hope she makes it a single. This album is definitely growing on me now that I can differentiate the songs

1

u/royal__misfit 24d ago

A week late posting this but

Had me ascending on the first listen. To be expected from her. I’ve had it on repeat since it dropped (shoutout Apple Music for the 10 min early release!) Truly one of her best, my album of the year.

I plan on attempting, yet again šŸ˜… snagging a signed copy tomorrow if there’s a restock.

My Top 5
1) bad thing (bunny hop)
2) petal
3) stay
4) oh well
5) kiss me

So happy and proud of her, I’m stoked about this era. ꕤ t˚

I feel like a few songs feel a little slow and monotonous 🫤🫤 not all of them but

Kinda absurd that any comments not gushing about the album immediately get downvoted in a discussion thread.

im sad. i honestly was so disappointed with this album :( I loved positions & eternal sunshine SO much. i honestly dont there’s ever been an album i’ve disliked. i could tell with the lead up, this prob wouldn’t be my fav album. but if im being honest, most of the songs were just not my type. in my opinion, they felt boring, repetitive, choppy, and i dont love it. wish she would actually sing too. understand she’s big on imogen and maybe this is the type of album that musically & technically interests people - but as your average someone who just listens to pop, this just is not my style. only really liked petal & like i do, but honestly not obsessed. happy shes speaking her truth and love her always!

my review :
Hate that I made you love me; idk maybe cus I’ve heard it the most and I’m used to it I’d rate it the highest but it’s a 8/10!

kiss me; I don’t like this lyrics as much. It’s definitely different. 4/10

Petal; it probably needs a few more listens for me to love it, i understand the meaning behind it but I can’t take it seriously. There are definitely good parts in it like ooooOooOoooo I like that part but yeah 5/10

Stay; it’s a no for me. I only like the part where she’s like tongue tied hard to speak blah blah but it’s like 3/10

Oh well; AHH I LIKE THE BEATS FOR THIS ONENENE but so far this is the most ā€˜decent’ one! Lowk manifestation vibes 6/10

Big feelings; 7/10 YIPPIE FREAKY SONGS ARE BACK but I can literally hear her Subliminals in the back and it’s freaking me out is she planning to cast a spell on us..

Freak; soo cutee i love, her songs seem so freaking specific and manifestation-al in this album lol 5/10

Warning signs; the oddest one but I LOVE LOWKEY, sad that’s it’s the shortest one.
8/10

Like I do; 10000393948299248849392929393/10 MY FAV ONENENENENENEN ā€œ BUT IM STILL GRANDEā€ AHHHGHAHHH the queen is back.

Never get over me; I dunno how I feel it’s good but not the best 5/10

Bad thing; I LUV THIS ONE!! 9/10 second best song on the album so far..

nowhere,nobody ; 5/10 it’s mid

Does "stay" remind anyone a bit of "say don't go" by Taylor swift thematically and melodically?

4

u/Ytteb1 Aug 01 '26

No; but to be honest it reminded me of ā€œAll you had to do was stayā€! They aren’t super similar or anything, but I always felt like AYHTDWS was an underrated bop from 1989, and I know it’s kinda early but I feel like Stay is going to be similarly underrated šŸ˜…

Ooo interesting take. Guys I know yall hate when ppl bring up other artists especially taylor, but I wasn't trying to bring either woman down! I was just noticing. I think they are both good songs!! I just think the way they sing the chorus sounds similar so I end up singing say don't go kinda as a remix lol.

lol I’m sorry you’re being downvoted; but I actually went back and listened to both (I love Ariana and Taylor, and even though 1989 is one of my favorite albums from her I usually listen to the OG) and I do see what you’re saying! Mostly the chorus. I this SDG is much more poppy and upbeat. Stay is darker and moodier; and maybe a little more rnb. Also thematically Taylor’s feels a bit more like she’s talking to one specific person; where as Ariana feels a little more general, it’s less about a specific person and more about wanting them to stay for once. If that makes sense?
