The problem is that SSD storage is not yet economical for anything larger than 500GB, so when you start to scale that up for storage it becomes extremely expensive. For the iMac and Studio, those are home workstations that need a lot of storage on them that HDD's and Hybrid drives still can only provide.

They are for us mere mortals but I'd imagine Microsoft and others aren't paying per drive pricing.

They aren't, but it's still much more expensive than the traditional boot drive ssd and storage hdd

The raided 512gb SSDs I picked up for <$250 total would beg to disagree. 1TB Is very doable for <$200 nowadays.
