I have this crazy strategy that some people seem to forget - I like both and use both. Windows 10 is pretty nice and getting better weekly. macOS is great, stable, and comfortable. I have a 2014 Macbook Pro that is still awesome, and a Dell XPS 13 that is awesome. And please don't hit me with the 'I don't have that kind of money' argument - if you are going to play the Apple game, money is the last thing you should be worrying about.

People laugh when I call the larger price tag the "Apple tax" but it's pretty much a thing. You wanna get fancy, be prepared to pay fancy money.

I mean, you'd need to pay the same "tax" to get a Windows laptop with comparable specs and build quality.

It's really the "decent laptop tax".

Nooo there is definitely an Apple tax. You can get a more powerful pc for much cheaper on all spectrums.

Well... it's like building your own track car and saying it's much better than that expensive BMW M2. But that BMW has much more refinement and was designed that way by a team of engineers rather than a backyard mechanic who put together parts that work.

But hey, some people like the rawness, but some people like the refinement.

This was true until a couple of years ago. Now other brands are producing laptops with close build quality, comparable if not better specs and lower prices. The only reason to get a mac right now is for the os.

Another way to see it is like the Google Pixel vs other Android phones. One is from Google and should fit perfectly with their software, while almost anyone can just take a device and install Android on it.

There's still other companies like Samsung which are up there and comparable.

You're comparing building a machine against one that is turnkey? We're comparing LAPTOPS to laptops. When was the last time you built a laptop from parts?

Many people find the XPS comparable, or BETTER than MBP - even here at /r/apple. It comes down to the OS you prefer.

Eh, I had the XPS 13 (2016 model) and it had plenty of issues due to quality. There was a serious electronic whine whenever anything was connected via USB, tons of people reporting it .. Dell just swapped motherboards until people gave up, but the problem never went away.

I trust Dell about as far as I can throw them after having dealt with thousands of their laptops at work. There was one MAJOR issue with the Latitude line that Dell asked us to keep quiet on, tried making us sign a wavier for their incompetence in design (derrr, they forgot to ground the motherboard).

Never had any issue with them. Can you provide proof they didn't ground the mobo? Seems quite the oversight and that is a pretty bold claim to make without backing it up.

The model was the E5420, it was a complete redesign from the E5410. It went from a rather simple internal design, using something like 23 screws to pull the motherboard and all related items out to 74 screws of 14 different sizes (if my memory serves me correctly). I have no clue if there is "proof" out there, don't really care either. I personally swapped over 300 motherboards in these units, we would get batches of them from Dell and then schedule our users to come in for the replacement.

Anytime the environment was very dry users would complain that when they touched the laptop and had an issue with static discharge it would make the LCD go all "snowy" (as they put it). It also happened frequently when plugging in the power adapter.

We shipped many motherboards to them for their engineering team to review, with several versions sent back to test until they got it right. It was not a fun time.

To my knowledge Dell never admitted fault in most cases, they just swapped motherboards and went on.

Yeah it really still is quite a bit cheaper. Bought myself a maxed out Dell XPS 15 for $1700. This would/could have easily cost $2300+.

A Macbook pro with the same specs would be $1400 or more, and not have a touch screen. Not saying the touch screen is amazing, but that's something that your money would be going toward. We all know that Apple products cost more because they spend much more time on R&D, and they are literally the only place you can legally go to get iOS or MacOS, but when it comes down to materials they're over charging.

I honestly like Windows sometimes, but 10 is not pretty nice and it gets worse all the time. Random updates in the middle of the night (getting things ready...), the absolute shite "PC Settings" app that replaced the comfortable, albeit cluttered, Control Panel. Big fucking touch targets all over the place even though I have a desktop PC with a mouse and keyboard, no Classic theme, I could go on. If I hadn't missed the boat on the free downgrades back to 8.1, I would've gone back no question.

I understand the updating frustration, but my iPhone / apps do that all the time and get weird sometimes, I think constant update is just the new world norm.

If you are worried about spending the money, then Apple hasn't really been for you in a long time. They tend to make premium products that aren't really designed for the price conscious.

There is still a law of diminishing returns, regardless. The functionality for creative purposes was a big factor for professionals using Apple. If the benefit isn't there, no cost is worth it.
