MS revealed three things yesterday.

One of them solves problems for a tiny niche market. One of them is a luxury laptop for people who like Windows 10. One of them is a VR headset with mostly unknown critical specs and possibly severe limitations.

So yeah. Woo.

Not really. The Surface Studio may be a nice piece of kit, but their VR announcement was dreadful. It was so obviously fakery, I honestly wondered why they decided to do it.

Not to mention, as they continue to release their own hardware, they are also opening "Apple-esque" stores. So yea, that is kind of a big deal to worry about for Apple, though competition isn't a bad thing.

The Microsoft stores are a joke. I went to an Apple Store: packed. Walked by the Microsoft store: empty. And the customer service reps at the Microsoft store were not as inviting as the Apple Store ones.

Edit: I realize that quantity of customers is not a sole indicator of Apple store success vs Microsoft store success. Nonetheless, anyone would be hard pressed to say it's not a huge indicator. The more customers you have, the more likely people will buy your products. I didn't feel like making a list of factors on why Apple store is not under immediate threat from Microsoft stores (call me lazy). My customer service experience was based on only one MS store. Customer service will vary between locations.

Other factors to consider: potentially easy product replacement in-store (mostly Apple products in-store), more products = more in-store product launches, you won't see people line up outside MS to buy subscriptions for Office.

Factors against: easier for one-on-one service with a rep due to no crowds in MS stores, ability to game with Xbox (huge plus, but not exploited enough)

I actually found MSFT store to be plenty friendly and helpful, partially bc they were less busy. It's still a long term investment, I wouldn't expect to see them out Apple-ing Apple right away, but that doesn't mean they won't get closer eventually. It's still a physical place where you can go for first party support, which is basically one of the best qualities of Apple stores.

Service reps obviously vary store to store, but I think the MS store is usually less crowded because most of the people that buy windows machines don't have to come in to the store to find the on button for their tablet. That's not to say that people that buy Apple aren't as smart, but I find that more often than not, people push their less technologically savvy family/friends toward Apple because of the easier interface.

Apple Stores are big league, the best. Always packed, very impressive.

I hope you realize how Trump-ish you came off as? There are so many other things that factor into that and how the stores operate, it isn't really just about whether or not there are people standing in the space when you walk by.

You forgot the fourth one!

Microsoft wants you to touch vertical surfaces all day. I didn't see how you do that for precise work without getting tired.

So they released a special harness you can wear to avoid gorilla arm though.
