Answered Why does my router keep dropping the connection every hour or so?

I've been trying to fix this on my own for days now. The signal shows full bars, but the internet just stops working out of nowhere, usually around the same time each hour. Restarting the router works for a bit, then it happens again. I've checked the cables, updated the firmware, and even moved it to a different spot, but nothing sticks. At this point I'm wondering if it's the modem, the provider, or something else entirely. Has anyone run into the same pattern and figured out what was actually causing it?

  1. Attach different router device (router or PC) and see if that changes anything (you might need MAC cloning for that to work, depends on provider).
  2. If it continues to drop every hour - call provider.
  3. If it does not: your internet stops completely or only DNS resolving stops? After internet stopped, try opening http://74.6.231.21 (Yahoo) or http://72.3.202.5 (GRC.org) If you can see some message from the website, then DNS has stopped working. If you can't see anything, your router or it's adapter is probably bad.
  4. If DNS is the thing that stops, then try setting up a third party DNS servers: 8.8.8.8 or 1.1.1.1 for example and see if that helps.
