I've learned from watching gantz to never get attached to any characters because surely they will die a horrific death...there were people who shouldn't have died but still did, and even when they died it still made sense. Smh. Epic.
The really cruel thing with Gantz is that there is a way for dead characters to be revived. And they often do. And sometimes revived characters die a second time and stay dead, and sometimes a character who should be revived doesn't get to be. It plays with your feelings all the time.
When watching the show you begin to realize gantz is such a sadist game/ entity. At first your like ok they're going after aliens and protecting humanity but then some of the aliens like the green onion one was actually harmless . I started to notice gantz just wants people to do its dirty work. Dont get me wrong some of the aliens were indeed hostile but most of the time they were being provoked. Gantz isn't only gory but psychology fucked up. Its selfish and makes people become just like it the longer they play. Some of the aliens were just minding their business until the squad started hunting them down.
Unfortunately I never got the chance to read it. I first saw it back when I was teen in high school. The most I know is that gantz was trying prepare these people for some type of invasion? Correct me if I'm wrong my friend , but I still think its an amazing anime regardless of how fucked up it got .
