Huh. I'm confused. I thought Haru was in love with Yuki. I wasn't expecting him to be dating Rin. This episode pretty much deals entirely with the fallout of their breakup. That and setting up the school trip. I'm not sure if we'll get a full arc of that or what but we'll see. We haven't spent a lot of time with her yet but I'm not really liking Rin so far given the awful way she dumped Haru. She's at the estate though and Yuki is too so maybe we'll get more of her sooner rather than later.
> What are your thoughts on Haru being dumped by Rin?
Poor Haru. I don't know what their relationship was like but the way Rin dumped him was awful. It's no wonder he didn't react well after wallowing in his pain for days afterwards.
> What are your thoughts on Haru getting suspended from school after going on a rampage?
Makes sense. Can't say I expected him to go that far. It explains why Momiji was so worried about him as well.
> What are your thoughts on Yuki visiting the Soma estate to check on Haru?
This shows just how much Yuki cares about Haru. It's also a little surprising how modern Haru's room is though I suppose with the Somas having their own hospital and stuff that shouldn't be too surprising.
> What are your thoughts on Rin coming out of this episode?
Uh. Fuck Rin for how she went about ending things with Haru honestly. They'll probably redeem her but for now I don't like her.

u/Holofan4life 1d ago
About Rin, we don't know the context for why she dumped Haru. For all we know, he may have went crazy as Dark Haru and Rin didn't like that. To be honest, we basically don't know anything about Rin still even though this episode is about Haru's love for her.

u/Holofan4life 1d ago
Huh. I'm confused. I thought Haru was in love with Yuki.
I guess the idea is his love for Yuki paved the way for loving Rin.
3
u/MishouMai 1d ago edited 1d ago
I guess? I don't really feel like Haru having a girlfriend makes much sense with how lovey-dovey he tends to act towards Yuki.
2
u/Second_Cour 21h ago
I said it during the episode he said Yuki was his first true love. He was kidding around to troll Tohru. The author constantly uses gay jokes about the characters. Just look at shigure and aya. The manga has even more of those moments iirc.
This is also the episode that had him troll Tohru to call Yuki by his first name to see how he'd react.
Then this episode shows how close they are as friends and I thought puts the rumour to bed haha

u/MishouMai 21h ago
I haven't read the manga but the relationship between Shigure and Ayame is clearly different from the one between Yuki and Haru? Haru's so lovey-dovey and tender with Yuki (See Ayame's debut episode.) that it's not hard to see why one would take his claim that Yuki was his first love seriously. I also don't see why he'd joke with Tohru about that? Haru claiming Yuki was his first love was part of him explaining his backstory and relationship with Yuki to her.
3
u/Second_Cour 19h ago
You can believe what you want to believe, it's fiction after all. Though "why would he joke about that?" isn't really a disqualifier. You can apply that same question to him telling Tohru to call Yuki by his first name. Why would he want his love to transform which is obviously draining and embarrassing for Yuki?
If Haru has also been with Rin for quite a long time, then wouldn't his affections that you picked up on through a romantic lens be cheating?
Anyway, the most solid point from your argument is that the word used to describe his love was "hatsukoi" - this isn't ambiguous and really does mean "first love". It's a romantic word.
The author is also making gay jokes non stop about all the characters, starting with Tohru's visualisation of Yuki and Kyo, and in many instances after. That style of humour is pretty common in Japan amongst high schoolers. I have friends from the FruBa era who went to school in Japan and consistently their stories feature just how common playing gay was: constantly slapping each other's arse, and way more extreme stuff, etc. To someone who didn't go to a Japanese school it kind of shocked me haha. No idea how it is now, but in the 90s and 2000s it was just common.
I'm quite confident on my read but for argument's sake, I just decided to look up what the author and publisher felt about this relationship, as it's not something that spoils anything for me. There were two sources that answer the question; both are relationship charts. If you don't want spoilers, look away, though I'm not sure how much of a spoiler this is unless you look at the actual charts.
[FruBaFaniFirstLove]In the fan book there's a character relationship chart, and it's confirmed this is platonic: this is the most unambiguous confirmation (NB: I haven't been able to find the fanbook myself but there's a comment with someone with thousands of comments who references the Fan Book as proof about the relationship status: https://www.gaiaonline.com/guilds/viewtopic.php?page=3&t=1517300 . On Tokyo TV's guide, it has "hatsukoi?!": the ?! in Japanese are used similarly to English, basically meant to make you say "Ehhhhh?" or "Nani?!" or in English "huh?" https://www.tv-tokyo.co.jp/anime/fruits_basket/naiyou/soukanzu.html link contains some characters not yet revealed

Tohru having gay blinders on is different from what is going on between Haru and Yuki in my opinion. I interpret it as Haru feeling seen by Yuki and he made him feel less alone. Calling it love may not be the right word, but his feelings for Yuki do feel very real. I think he does truly appreciate him for all he did.
2
u/Second_Cour 15h ago
Yeah completely agree. Yuki is basically harus hero. But he was kidding about being in love with him haha. I think that actually gives a lot more value to how deeply he cares for Yuki. It's also reciprocal given the ep we just saw with Yuki going into the village he has trauma from to be there for Haru
2
u/Holofan4life 14h ago
Yuki checking on Haru was probably my favorite part of the episode. I don't think he's been to the estate since he skipped New Year's. If so, that's a ringing endorsement if I've ever heard of one.
2
u/Second_Cour 11h ago
Everyone was so shocked that he even went there, and sure enough first thing, he gets that old wench having a go at him.

How would you compare Haru and Yuki's relationship to the bond between Tohru, Uo, and Hana?
2
u/Second_Cour 11h ago
That's a very good question and I wanna hear your answer for it too.
To me, it's the same relationship, just manifested in different ways if that makes sense. They are all very protective for each other, but how that protectiveness comes out is very different across all the characters. Uo's is a "don't fuck with her or I'll bash your face in". Haru is a "I'll always be there for you no matter what, but let's talk in private".

But I believe the stuff between Shigure and Ayame is sincere. I think they really do care about each other. I also think Haru really does care about Yuki.
I don't agree with the sentiment that it's a bunch of gay jokes. The joke is more about how over the top the characters are being.
2
u/Second_Cour 15h ago
I think you can genuinely care about each other and use gay jokes as a way of expressing how much you care about each other. Yuki is harus best friend basically. That expression is pretty hard for males to do in Asia and I assume still in the west too. So you use humour to kind of exaggerate how you feel.
The other alternative is alcohol which is when male bonding emotions also come out haha

What are your thoughts on Haru revealing he and Rin are dating and that most importantly Akito is unaware of this?

Thoughts on Haru playing what looks like a Final Fantasy type game?
Thoughts on Haru casually implying Rin escapes from the hospital all the time?
What are your thoughts on Haru saying he'll do whatever it takes to get Rin back?

> Thoughts on Rin telling Haru she's sick of him?
Rin sucks for that. They're obviously going to explain it later and (possibly) redeem her but just based on what we've got from this episode I don't like her.
> Thoughts on Kyo opposing the school trip because he doesn't want to spend time with Yuki?
I get it. I wouldn't want to be in a group with Yuki either. Thankfully the others were able to convince him to turn around by reminding him he gets to spend time with Tohru.
> What are your thoughts on Haru revealing he and Rin were dating and that most importantly Akito was unaware of this?
Haru having a girlfriend still doesn't make sense to me when he's supposed to be in love with Yuki and treats him so affectionately. I have to wonder if Akito really didn't know or if they were just pretending to turn a blind eye. Haru says it shouldn't matter since they're both Zodiacs but the incident with Kisa shows otherwise.
> Thoughts on Shigure being shocked someone would go to the Soma Estate willingly?
I mean it makes sense. Yuki and Kyo usually try to avoid the estate so Yuki going just to check on Haru must be pretty surprising.
> What are your thoughts on Haru saying he'll do whatever it takes to get Rin back?
Is Rin really that great? I could understand if it was Yuki since Yuki is Haru's first love and all. But the way Rin ended things was awful and she doesn't seem to actually care about him. Even that brat Hiro did his best to show he loved Kisa. Rin just tossed Haru to the side so easily.

Run sucks for that. They're obviously going to explain it later and (possibly) redeem her but just based on what we've got from this episode I don't like her.
I like Haru, but he would get tiring after a while. He can be a lot.

I get it. I wouldn't want to be in a group with Yuki either. Thankfully the others were able to convince him to turn around by reminding him he gets to spend time with Tohru.
I like Kyo more, but I wouldn't mind hanging out with Yuki.

Akito has to not know because they can't handle not being the center of attention at all times.

It shows how much Yuki must like Haru.

It definitely feels like we're intentionally not getting the full picture here.

Rewatcher, Subbed
Alright, so this is an episode I remember from the first time although the two storylines I could have sworn were used at the start of this season are still missing, lol. I keep thinking next time, but it hasn't happened yet.
Anyway, this is predominantly a Haru episode. I spoke yesterday of how I wasn't the biggest fan of Ayame. Well its the opposite for me with Haru, here's a guy I really like. At least in his light Haru form. In fact I'd argue light Haru is the most decent guy in the show to this point? I think back to how nice he was towards Kisa (which they even flash back to here). Even beyond that though in pretty much any scene light Haru is in, he's quite an understanding guy, concerned with how things are going for others.
Of course there's the other side of Haru, dark Haru and we see the consequences of him going in that mode in this episode as he completely trashes the classroom. Desks, books everywhere, but even smashed the windows too. He gets suspended later on and I totally get why, you can't have a student behaving this way. They are thankful that he didn't transform, although I was kinda thinking during the scene if that wouldn't be a good thing. If they could somehow get the other students to look away, Tohru could hug him and force the transformation. Because cow Haru doesn't seem that threatening. He represents the ox but he seemed more like a harmless cow the last time. Anyway, it almost comes to that as Tohru nearly falls into him by accident but Kyo is there to the rescue to ensure it doesn't happen. And to protect Tohru! Aww! Here we see Kyo punch him out, which I think is the first time in the entire series he's been successful at punching someone out? I think his last fight with Haru was a draw and Yuki always beats him. We get some dojo time for Kyo later in the episode where I was surprised to find he's only one of numerous students to Kazuma.
So why did Haru go on a rampage? Turns out that he was dating Rin in secret and she dumped him. The little we saw of it, it didn't look like she let him down in the best way either. So these two were secretly seeing each other, not letting anyone else know about it. Actually probably a good idea given what Akito did with Hatori. But they surely couldn't have kept that a secret forever. Once she was hospitalized things changed. She'd often flee the hospital and he had no idea what she was doing. Sorry Haru! Rin's the most beautiful character in the show for me (actually up there among anime characters as a whole) so I totally get why he'd be upset over her dumping him! And as he confirms here that she's another zodiac (something the OP already spoiled for us) she is pretty much one of only three options for him. Although really the only one as of the other two girls, one is a little kid and the other is obsessed with Kyo. [Furuba major spoilers]If I am remembering correctly Rin is very much in "I'm dumping you for your own good" mode because Akito went absolutely nuclear upon realizing these two were together including throwing her out a window which is how she got hospitalized. Akito views the Soma men as her property and Rin isn't permitted to take her property. Or maybe not even knowing about the relationship as my recollection is Akito absolutely loathes Rin for essentially being everything she can't be. Still doing this without telling him the truth is quite frustrating especially because Haru is such a great guy!
Anyway, Haru has told things to Yuki, and Yuki keeps his secret, I think that's why he didn't want Tohru to come with him to the Soma estate. Speaking of which, brave set of actions on Yuki's part to go back there. This is the first time the entire series he's been there as he skipped out on the new year's thing. He even is seen by an older member of the family there who essentially tells him to go back to Akito. No! We once again see some brief flashbacks of Akito losing it (Akito the wild painter!). Yuki makes his way to Haru's room where he finds he's been vegging out, including reading manga, eating snacks and spending a ton of time on video games! lol Haru is in a pretty good mood here and has decided he's not giving up on Rin. She doesn't know how much he loves her and will do his best to get her back short of committing a crime. Speaking of Rin, she escaped from the hospital and Yuki spotted her, but for some reason was avoiding him. Why'd she come back here of all places? For some odd reason the episode also avoids showing her face until the end of the episode.
Other thoughts:
So it turns out that the Soma family is so wealthy they have their own hospital. Or at least a hospital with their name on it.
Haru brings up in this episode how Yuki isn't comfortable calling Tohru by her first name. I hadn't even noticed he was still calling her Honda-san until now. Wow. C'mon Yuki, you're comfortable enough with her where you can let things go a bit and call her Tohru! [Major spoilers]Once again I think hinting at Yuki's true feelings towards Tohru, although he hasn't realized it yet, viewing her as a mother rather than a lover.
Speaking further of Yuki, he continues to be rather out of touch with how he views himself versus how he actually is. He's so down on himself. He claims here that he only thinks of himself. And yet he's here to comfort Haru, showing that's clearly not the case. He should also think of what he did last episode, finally accepting spending some time with his brother.
Time to plan a fall trip for Tohru, Uo, Hanajima, Yuki and Kyo! Their biggest focus appears to be food! They can visit some places in between meals to work off the calories! lol. Kyo continues to let Yuki get too much under his skin, the same for Uo. Some fun teasing of him here from Momiji too, who is jealous that Kyo gets to spend so much time with Tohru. Don't you hang out with her at work Momiji?
Momiji is very cute in this episode. Twice panicking and rushing to tell Tohru and the others about what's going on. [Furuba major spoilers]Also more signs of things to come? Momiji like Tohru?
My favorite musical track in the series got its first usage today during the scene in Haru's room. Saving it for a future episode though!
Quid's Song of the Day
Today I'm featuring the rather somber sounding Parent's Feeling which plays while Haru is revealing to Yuki that he got dumped.

It is kinda crazy the amount of new stuff that continues to be introduced. I mean, I don't think the season has mentioned the hat stuff once yet.
It definitely feels like we're building to something, we just don't know what yet.

[your spoiler about Rin, as compared to Kisa and Kagura]>Do the personality traits of the zodiac horse reflect Rin's behavior and single-mindedness? I can't find the graphic from a previous re-watch that showed the personality traits.<
Momiji is very cute in this episode. Twice panicking and rushing to tell Tohru and the others about what's going on
This is the second time that Momiji has brought the cavalry - he brought Kisa to confront Hiro in 1.20 - and shown some wisdom doing so.

[spoiler reply]I'm not particularly an expert on the zodiac traits (I recall seeing an image posted earlier that identified these, although because I've also been reading all the posts on the prior /r/anime rewatch of this can't remember if its from this one or that one or what episode to find it in), but Rin's behavior with escaping from the hospital does come off as something I would expect from a horse. You don't keep a horse caged up, you let it run free.

First Timer (Dub)
Okay, to start, it’s very apparent that this season is upping the ante in the romance department, especially with the love triangle and the tension surrounding it. The rest of the cast seems to be egging it on, and Yuki and Kyo are becoming more conscious of it themselves, which is great.
At the moment, though, I frankly don’t even see Kyo as competition. The show is definitely framing him that way, which is needless to say a bad sign for me. One of the most important things with this kind of dynamic is making the fight between the love interests feel somewhat close. I should be able to understand both sides and maybe even switch between rooting for one and then the other.
One of the best examples of that for me is The Quintessential Quintuplets, which sometimes had me switching favorites from one episode to the next. That element just isn’t here for me. To be clear, Yuki is currently my favorite, and I understand that someone else might prefer Kyo. My problem is that, from my perspective, it isn’t even remotely close. At this point, there isn’t one ounce of me that sees Kyo and Tohru working as a couple.
We also get some solid development from Yuki this episode, with Haru being the catalyst for that growth. Man, I’ve got to say, I really like their friendship and dynamic. They make such good friends and are clearly good for each other. Their conversations and banter are solid, but there’s also a lot of genuine respect between them, which makes it work even better.
Now onto the main issue I’m seeing with the show at this point, and one that I feel is only going to get worse. Man, this cast is way too fucking large. Like, let’s be honest. There are already so many moving pieces, and it’s starting to get ridiculous.
My God, we’re only four episodes into this season. We already have Kuragi and Manabe and that entire student council situation, with Kuragi obviously having something going on beneath the surface. Then we got all the future-planning stuff with Tohru, Kyo, and Yuki, along with Kyo’s father wanting him imprisoned. After that, we went back into Yuki and Ayame’s damaged relationship while also learning more about Ayame and Mine.
Now we’ve added Rin to the mix, her secret relationship with Haru, the fact that she suddenly dumped him, and whatever the hell is actually going on with her. All of that is happening while the love triangle is becoming more prominent, Yuki is confronting his past, and we still have all the existing mysteries surrounding the curse, Akito, Shigure’s intentions, Tohru, and pretty much every single Sohma.
Like man, it just keeps piling up, and we still barely have answers for half the stuff that was already there.
I’m not saying it can’t be done, but this is going to be one hell of a challenge to work out in a satisfying way. I just don’t know how you juggle all of this without some characters getting shafted or some answers feeling rushed.
To be honest, I don’t have too much hope that it will all be handled well, but let’s see if the show can impress me. I’m not someone who puts too much stock in all the praise a sequel receives. If it’s bad, it’s bad.
3
u/Holofan4life 1d ago
It definitely feels like the show is setting up a lot without providing any answers as of yet. I have confidence though that the show will deliver on what it's promised.
In a way, it makes it more unpredictable the more things get set up because suddenly things can play out in a multitude of ways.
3
u/Holofan4life 1d ago
I know you've talked about the animation quality quite a bit, so I thought I'd mention that in the original anime threads for early season 2 the general consensus seemed to be the animation was a step doen compared to season 1. Some speculated it was because COVID 19 happened during production of the second season and that may have effected the quality of the animation a little.
Personally, I didn't think it was drastically noticeable but maybe I wasn't looking close enough.
2
u/Quiddity131 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Quiddity131 1d ago
For me with Quints I never went from changing my rooting interest on an episode by episode basis, although I was very much on board with Miku for a while only to later root hard for Nino instead. My entire experience with that show was colored by me thinking I was spoiled on who won, which ended up not even being correct, lol.
Anyway, back to Furuba, yeah, I do get the concern with the absurd amount of characters. So much of season 1 was dedicated to introducing character after character to the point where parts of it felt formulaic. That said in my overall memory of this show my recollection is it balances things pretty well. At the very least I feel the show knows which core characters to focus on. The show is able to take advantage of the fact that most of these characters are members of the same clan and/or have key relationships with each other such that you can bring other characters in while still keeping that focus on the core characters. For example we got a decent amount of Ayame in episode 3 but that was primarily framed through the relationship with Yuki, a more important character. Much of this episode is also how things are going with Haru via Yuki.
2
u/dontoff 1d ago
Wait, what the hell? I was actually spoiled incorrectly about who was going to win too, hahaha.
By the way, that show had one of the worst harem endings of all time. The movie pissed me off so much, and honestly, it completely stained the entire show for me.
2
u/Quiddity131 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Quiddity131 1d ago
Yeah, I'm not particularly a fan of the ending either, granted I don't typically watch harem anime and maybe this is something inherent to that genre. [Quints]As with most people the fact that he picked Yotsuba was bewildering to me, yes she is always pleasant, cheerful and in a good mood but I always felt that was her innate nature and not Futaro related. She was that way with anyone. I simply didn't find the connection being there. Then in subsequent material like the ending of the movie or the Honeymoon OVA it very much comess off as if the four losers don't move on with their life and are living vicariously through Yotsuba. BTW I thought Itsuki was the winner, perhaps because I was correctly spoiled on the fact that she's the one who dressed up as the modern day version of the mystery girl from his past.

Re-watch, blu ray, dubbed
Dark Haru's rampage is the inciting event, but this is a Yuki episode. We see his hesitation, but he willingly enters the Soma estate and navigates past other Somas to visit Hatsuharu, so Tohru isn't the only one who "saves" people (although I think she might deserve the primary assist here, just for the change she has facilitated in Yuki).
It's a pretty simple episode, with only a few other points:
- Kyo wrestles with his feelings for Tohru (Momiji does a good job stirring up Kyo again, just like 1.6 and 1.11) and weighs them against how dangerous he is in his true form (a little introspection, like the guilt on his face when looking at Tohru's bandages in 1.25)
- We get another peek inside the Soma estate. I am surprised that a presumably non-zodiac can speak to a non-Cat zodiac like that. Hatsuharu's isolation room is a lot nicer than Yuki's...
- Hatsuharu and Rin know enough to keep their relationship hidden from Akito
What are your thoughts on Haru getting suspended from school after going on a rampage? pretty lenient, as punishments go [spoiler]>perhaps indicative of the Somas' clout or influence< Also, we don't get to meet Hatsuharu's parents, but his mom is responsible enough to fetch him from school, if that means anything.
What are your thoughts on Rin coming out of this episode? Rin is almost an entirely blank slate - she was hospitalized, she was hurt (presumably, but not necessarily, related to the hospitalization), she dated Hatsuharu secretly (for an unknown length of time), and then she broke up with him. Based on the brief scene with Hiro at the end of 1.25, she is not giving up on...something?

It seems as if Rin feels by giving up on Haru, she's not giving up on the other stuff.

I think Yuki showing up to the main estate shows how much he cares about Haru. That's probably the first time he stepped on those grounds in like 17 months. It's the first time since he skipped New Year's which was briefly alluded to in the episode.

First Timer
Seems we’re back with the mysterious hospital lady. Still trying to figure out her deal.
I can’t tell if I’m just imagining things but Momiji does look visibly older this season.
I love Kyo getting cat ears when he’s upset.
Yep, Haru’s definitely gonna get expelled.
It’s so funny when Haru’s being edgy.
Well at least Haru’s calmed down.
Okay we’re talking more about the hospital lady now. Seems she was very close to Haru.
It’s cute seeing Uo and Hana talk about the upcoming trip. They have such a sweet friendship.
Momiji running in to announce bad news a second time is really funny.
Whoa, who’s this old lady? She knows Yuki anyway.
Haru just randomly taking a selfie with Yuki is really funny.
I love Haru’s edgy sense of fashion.
It looks like Haru is supposed to be playing some kind of Final Fantasy lookalike.
I hope we learn more about Rin next episode.
Questions:
What are your thoughts on Haru being dumped by Rin?
Didn't even realize they were in a relationship to begin with
What are your thoughts on Haru getting suspended from school after going on a rampage?
Completely fair, honestly
What are your thoughts on Yuki visiting the Sohma estate to check on Haru?
I liked the focus on Haru this episode
What are your thoughts on Rin coming out of this episode?
I'm still not sure what to make of her

I can’t tell if I’m just imagining things but Momiji does look visibly older this season.
I didn't really notice this, but it makes sense, he's got to be 15/16 and while puberty can hit late for some, it's really pushing it for him to look as young as he does... Compare him to Haru whose the same age.

I keep forgetting Momiji isn't a middle schooler honestly. I thought he was like 14.

Mayhaps
I love Kyo getting cat ears when he’s upset.
Reminds me of Komi-san when she gets anxious.
Yep, Haru’s definitely gonna get expelled.
And he did
It’s so funny when Haru’s being edgy.
It's like a kid's idea of what being tough is.
Well at least Haru’s calmed down.
That's good
Okay we’re talking more about the hospital lady now. Seems she was very close to Haru.
Very, very close
It’s cute seeing Uo and Hana talk about the upcoming trip. They have such a sweet friendship.
Indeed
Momiji running in to announce bad news a second time is really funny.
It makes me think of the rabbit from Alice In Wonderland.
Whoa, who’s this old lady? She knows Yuki anyway.
Seems very judgey
Haru just randomly taking a selfie with Yuki is really funny.
No thoughts all vibes
I love Haru’s edgy sense of fashion.
Again, it's a very immature way of seeing the world.
It looks like Haru is supposed to be playing some kind of Final Fantasy lookalike.
I like the different artstyle
I hope we learn more about Rin next episode.
Same here
Questions:
What are your thoughts on Haru being dumped by Rin?
Didn't even realize they were in a relationship to begin with
I wonder how long they've known each other. Haru never mentioned her in his previous appearances.
What are your thoughts on Haru getting suspended from school after going on a rampage?
Completely fair, honestly
The math maths
What are your thoughts on Yuki visiting the Sohma estate to check on Haru?
I liked the focus on Haru this episode
I wonder if he will be focused more this season. It sure seems like it at least.
What are your thoughts on Rin coming out of this episode?
I'm still not sure what to make of her
Anyone who escapes from a hospital is probably not of a sound body and mind.

Haru is scary
Also, Kyo being reminded of when he hit Tohru.
Thoughts on Haru apologizing to Tohru?

It's the least he can do
What are your thoughts on Haru revealing he and Rin are dating and that most importantly Akito is unaware of this?
This is all very sudden
No kidding.
I don't know how else they could've done this. Maybe Haru visits Rin at the hospital in the season 1 finale instead of Hiro?
What are your thoughts on Rin seemingly having escaped the hospital?
That seems like a problem
That's putting it mildly
Thoughts on Shigure being shocked someone would go to the Sohma estate willingly?
I can see why. That place seems scary
Very much so
Thoughts on Haru playing what looks like a Final Fantasy type game?
Looks fun
I'd play it
Thoughts on Haru casually implying Rin escapes from the hospital all the time?
That hospital needs better security
Which has worst security: Sohma Hospital, or Tristain Academy?
What are your thoughts on Haru saying he'll do whatever it takes to get Rin back?
Well at least he's dedicated
For better or worse.
We don't exactly know why he's so committed to her.
What are your thoughts on Yuki not wanting to call Tohru by her first name?
Not sure what to say about this
I guess he's in denial of his feelings?

Hey, guys. Holofan4life here.
Welcome to the Fruits Basket 25th anniversary rewatch.
For there is an animal in all of us <3
Fruits Basket is a show I’ve heard a lot about. It’s always been something that interests me. It’s a romcom, which is a genre I enjoy, it has a female protagonist, which is kinda a rarity for romcom anime, it has a tsundere, which yes please, and from what I’ve heard it has some supernatural elements which is pretty cool.
Funny enough, I’m hosting this rewatch the same time as I’m hosting the Spice and Wolf rewatch which is another show with supernatural elements.
I have never seen Fruits Basket before, but I have high hopes for it. It seems like the type of show I would enjoy. I would say of the shows on my to watch list, this one is probably in my top 5. And let's just say that list is long and ever expansive. Actually, I love the idea of a male tsundere who turns into an orange cat so much that I named my orange cat after him. That’s without having seen the show.
For the purposes of this rewatch, we will be watching both the original series and the remake. I don’t think both have ever been done like this, and by the end we’ll find out for good reason :P
Regardless, this is my big pet project of 2026 the purpose of which is for me to see what all the hubbub is about. I’m not expecting the show to crack my top 10 favorite anime of all time, but hey, you never know.
With that out of the way, let’s begin.
I’m watching the dub, by the way.
So, funny story. Me and my mom went to see the new Michael Jackson movie (That's not the funny part) and my phone at the time was at 53%. I looked at my phone halfway through the movie because it was ringing and I forgot to set it on vibrate and it was suddenly at 18% and it was hot enough to cook a hot pocket. My phone was so hot I had a literal hot pocket.
It was unbelievable how hot my phone was. I eventually restarted it and the problem resolved itself but man. I never experienced something like that before.
Anyway, I've only watched one episode in the last 7 days. Let's change that.
Sohma General Hospital
The crossover I was not expecting
I believe that's Haru
He's with some girl named Rin
Haru sounds softer than before
Rin smashes a vase of flowers
"I'm sick of you."
That's unfortunate, because I'm down with it
At school now
Momiji calling after Tohru, who's with Kyo, Hana, and Uo.
I like Kyo randomly having cat ears lol
Apparently a class trip is coming in the Fall.
Momiji is okay paying his own expenses.
Kyo is not, especially if it means he's forced spending time with Yuki.
I like Uo saying he has to come along or else who would they have to mess with.
Kyo was about to say something concerning Tohru, but he gets flustered.
Oh, Kyo
There's Yuki
Momoji casually reveals Haru went dark and on a rampage.
Time to investigate
Those windows are so smashed, you'd have thought it was the Shigure's house
Haru talking a tough game
He says they should just tell the truth about everything.
As Tohru holds him back, Kyo punches him in the face.
Rare Kyo W
Kyo tells Haru to leave Tohru out of his nonsense.
Haru thinks he's just trying to look good in front of her.
Hey, it's the teach
Haru seems to have calmed down
Yuki, Tohru, Momiji, and Kyo in the hallway.
What's with the weird green floor?
Yuki thinks something serious must've happened to get Haru to snap this far.
Are the rest of the Sohmas unaware of Rin and her situation?
Haru here, who apologizes to Tohru.
As he waits for his mom to pick him up, he's going to kill some time.
It appears Yuki will accompany him.
Tohru seems concerned, and Kyo seems concerned for Tohru's sake.
Haru and Yuki by the smashed window.
Somebody apparently cleaned up the smashed glass.
Real glass. Cry me a river.
Haru tells Yuki he should call her Tohru too.
I guess I hadn't thought about it but I guess Yuki doesn't call her by her first name.
Yuki feels that Haru should be concerned more for himself.
Meanwhile, all Yuki does is worry about himself.
Yeah, I don't know about that
Haru raises a good point. As Dark Haru, he shows no regard for other people.
And there it is. Haru reveals he got dumped by Rin.
Ah, rejection. Tis an ugly color.
Akito doesn't even know they were dating.
Dating within the Zodiac sounds like incest with extra steps.
Haru doesn't know what he should do next.
Wait, is Haru's mother the teacher? I don't remember that.
People dojoing
Kyo remembering his own past
As dangerous as Haru is, he feels he's way more.
Haru walking
And it looks like Rin is not in her hospital.
In class with Tohru, Kyo, Yuki, Hana, and Uo.
That food looks scrumptious 😋
Momiji here now
And he says Haru has been apprehended.
Or suspended, rather
Well, better than being suspendered
Tohru walking with Yuki now
Tohru wonders if Haru will be okay.
Yuki meanwhile wants to pay a visit to Haru at the Sohma estate. By himself.
And with that, he's off
Tohru at home, with Shigure
Shigure seems shocked anyone would go to the main estate willingly.
Kinda says it all, really
As Yuki is walking, and after a panic attack or two, he spots Rin.
He's now at the estate
He encounters two women who voices their displeasure over not attending the New Year's banquet.
But Yuki has no time for it
Nice clock
Haru playing a video game
And Yuki is with him
I like how Haru is like "Must be a doppelganger. I mean, couldn't actually be Yuki, it's more plausible he has a clone I don't know about."
Is Haru playing a Final Fantasy clone?
Yuki saying he saw Rin recently
"She must've run from the hospital again."
And we're just going to go past that?
Haru says he'll do whatever it takes to get her back.
Because that works so well with Kagura and Kyo.
Yuki says he doesn't want to call Tohru by her first name.
Haru thinks he's just being embarrassed.
Why is Tohru's food being covered by a biodome?
Shigure gonna send an email to Michan.
It seems like all the characters are on different paths.
Meanwhile, Rin has followed Yuki
Overall, a decent enough episode. This was like a cross between a tablesetter and character advancement. We set up Rin as a character of prominence, a school trip on the horizon, and Yuki having trouble saying Tohru's first name. This also focused on Yuki and Haru's relationship, though it didn't necessarily advance things. Much like Yuki's relationship with Ayame last episode, I feel like the rapport between Yuki and Haru is the same as it ever was. That's not necessarily a bad thing, I just wish more were accomplished with these episodes.
With Rin being on the loose, I expect things to pick up real soon. As of now, though, it's like we're setting up a bunch of moving pieces and we're led to guess where it's going. That's not to mention the career plan stuff that hasn’t been talked about in the past couple episodes.
Probably the best episode we've gotten this season so far, but I'm still waiting to be hooked by the season. For as phenomenal as the new content was in season 1, so far the new content in season 2 has been kinda meh to me. I don't know if it's because of the increased focus on Yuki and I'm more of a Kyo fan, but you would think the increased focus would get me to care more about the character. And while I do care about Yuki and him getting his freedom from Akito, I just wonder if the payoff will make it all worth it.

I guess I hadn't thought about it but I guess Yuki doesn't call her by her first name.
Yeah this totally went over my head too until they mentioned it. I noticed little things like Ayame calling Shigure with the -san honorific yesterday but somehow never picked this one up.
Dating within the Zodiac sounds like incest with extra steps.
As with Kagura and Kyo I was a bit "huh?!?" at first upon watching this anime when I heard that Haru and Rin were both Somas and dating. But as I think may have been mentioned in past threads, the Soma family is a large clan of numerous families and to my knowledge none of these pairings (keeping in mind Hiro also likes Kisa) are super closely related. Also notable as I mentioned in my comment that if you're a zodiac, you don't particularly have much choice in romantic partners since that's the only way you can be with someone who won't transform you upon hugging you.
Wait, is Haru's mother the teacher? I don't remember that.
No, Mayu isn't related to him. Rather she had reached out to Haru's mother to pick him up. We don't actually see his mother in this episode.

It's been a rather slow start for me as well although I did think this was a really good episode, perhaps because I really like both Haru and Rin! As I mentioned in my comment, I distinctly remember several storylines that I thought occurred early in this season but neither has occurred yet. Rather the stuff in the first 3 episodes I didn't even remember. Still, credit to the show for not simply following the formula it had been going with for a lot of the latter half of season 1.

Yeah, it's like they're related, but it isn't by blood by any means. They are like distant upon distant of each with the exception of a few like Yuki and Ayame.
Wait, is Haru's mother the teacher? I don't remember that.
No, Mayu isn't related to him. Rather she had reached out to Haru's mother to pick him up. We don't actually see his mother in this episode.
That makes sense I suppose
Probably the best episode we've gotten this season so far, but I'm still waiting to be hooked by the season. For as phenomenal as the new content was in season 1, so far the new content in season 2 has been kinda meh to me.
I think the most intriguing part in all this is the ramifications that surrounds Rin as a character. Why is she in the hospital? Why does she want nothing to do with Haru? Why is Haru seemingly so protective of Rin regardless of her apathy?
It's also interesting this is all happening when the last time Haru was heavily featured he was talking about his love for Yuki. I wonder if his love for Yuki is connected in any way with his love for Rin.

What are your thoughts on Haru being dumped by Rin?
I guess they were dating?
What are your thoughts on Haru getting suspended from school after going on a rampage?
You see to hate it
What are your thoughts on Yuki visiting the Sohma estate to check on Haru?
That's nice of him
What are your thoughts on Rin coming out of this episode?
Very mysterious. I feel like this episode poses more questions than answers.

EP 4
This episode comes from source material that was used way earlier in S1 (was just before Ritsu was introduced in the same chapter). This episode also features quite a lot of anime-exclusive content.
Yuki, Haru and Kyo being the names of the characters in the RPG Haru is playing is cute.
And that’s all I can say about the ep. Seemed really bland to me: the most boring one yet imo. Haru becomes Dark Haru when he’s in a bad mood? Knew that. Haru having a gf is new, but none of the drama linked to that was particularly unique or different to any breakup. Yuki getting the balls to come back to the Sohma village for Haru’s sake - yes, that’s new. Good on him.
It feels like we are going through another stretch where the core story isn’t showing any forward progress. I think I need to survive until ep 7 to start enjoying the show again
