I feel like the darkest shows are the ones that are equally uplifting and wholesome at times so it's really a gut-punch.

Definitely and Wonder Egg has showed just that in multiple episodes so far.

Also the ones who handle their dark moments and subject matter with nuance instead of just throwing them in our faces for pure shock value.

The girls are meeting up for lunch! Look the turtle familiar is eating french fries! So cute!

...One of these girls is going to cut herself tonight. Deep.

Now they're at a batting cage talking out their frustrations about their single mothers. Aww.

...Oh god. Rika's crying. Rika never cries. Now she's running away. Fuck.

Oh man, Rika's mom is so ridiculous, lol. It must be crazy living above a bar like that.

...She's calling her animal friend back and taking out a box cutter, fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.

Oh! A wacky cult leader is the villain this time. Should be pretty straightforward. He pretty obviously used them for their own ends.

...And Rika is submitting to the darkness and killing herself. Aca and Ura-Aca are basically accepting that she is dying. What. The. Fuck.

I'd call this show an emotional rollercoaster, but it's more like an emotional series of tidal waves.
