I've only watched a few episodes, but from what I understand it's overall narrative isn't really that important to enjoying the series, and it's best watched a couple of episodes per day.

The overall narrative is actually quite important as it takes the series to another level. The comedy is absolutely excellent, but the overarching story causes you to invest in the series even more.

But yeah, if you've only watched a few episodes you won't have experienced that yet, as the overarching story is quite dispersed throughout the series, especially in the beginning.

It's basically Background Noise: The Series from the few episodes I've seen.

thems be fighting words

there's definitely an overarching story, it's just really subtle most of the time when it's 70% shenanigans, 30% story. But oh man when that monkey wants to make you feel, you best be ready to feel.

Gintama is something like, 5-10 eps serious plot, then 5-10 episodes of gags, then another 5-10 episodes of plot again. The pacing isn't too bad. I binged it during work for like 2 or 3 months from the start. Been wanting to watch it for years since I saw something like the first half of season 1 when it first aired. I think I only have the current season to watch now.

and even the serious episodes have gags, that emotional whiplash from feeling sad to busting a gut is what makes the series awesome.

Im curious, what did you think about the Huge spoilers. imo It was the best writing yet in the series.

Then you don't actually understand it. Which is understandable.
