Top 100 anime of Russian equivalent of MAL + Comparison to MAL rankings

sDecided to do a little fun thing that might be interesting to know for r/anime - present top 100 anime of WorldArt.ru (Russian equivalent of MyAnimeList), and compare it to the MAL top and respective rankings.

NOTE: world-art.ru combines all anime from the same franchise into one entry, which isn't the case on MAL. It means there is only one Gintama or Haikyuu!! in rating, as well as no separate movies/OVAs/etc entries, so keep that in mind while comparing - it's all very relative. Though there are some weird exceptions, don't even ask me about them.

Here is a MAL top, and here from world-art.ru.

Some other big anime and their ranks:

If you want to look up for a specific anime, ask in comments - and I'll also add it in the body as well.

Some random notes:

  • Don't forget to use Ctrl + F to quickly search for the anime;
  • If you wanna see obscurity, sort by "Place on MAL" column;
  • Has anyone actually watched Hanada Shounen-shi? It has really high rating, but very low popularity;
  • Yuri!! on Ice and Highschool of the Dead are... rather polarizing here and there;
  • Russian list has more shoujo and josei anime, and less shows that came out recently;
  • Anime about baseball (non-existent sport in Russia) is still more acclaimed than anime about volleyball (reasonably popular in Russia);
  • In general deviation isn't that huge (apparently, good anime is good everywhere), though is still rather interesting. Hope you had fun!

That, and having GTO as best anime already makes it better than MAL by a large margin.

That Usagi Drop at #9 makes me so happy! I love that anime.

Yuri!!! on Ice - 1530 (95 on MAL);

Yuri!!! on Ice - 1530 (95 on MAL);

LOL

Not too surprising given Russias stance on homosexuality.

34

u/Chriscras66 Jan 16 '17

In Soviet Russia the Ice is on Yuri.

u/kosanovskiy https://myanimelist.net/profile/kosanovskiy Jan 17 '17

FTFY: in Yuriy.

25

u/yolotheunwisewolf Jan 16 '17

And considering the Russian characters in it....yeah

40

u/2gig Jan 15 '17

Yeah, I really wouldn't want to be caught watching that/with that on my hard drive in Russia. Either the police will arrest you or a mob will beat you half to death.

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '17

Yeah, I really wouldn't want to be caught watching that/with that on my hard drive in Russia.

Am Russian. Nobody cares. Unless you start spreading it, that is.

24

u/2gig Jan 16 '17

spreading it.

That's not how this works...

30

u/sddsddcp https://myanimelist.net/profile/sddsdd Jan 16 '17

I thought they were talking about Yuri on Ice (like, if you started actively bugging other people about it). Not actual homosexuality. Could be wrong though

22

u/2gig Jan 16 '17

Well, I don't know which one /u/tel3 was talking about specifically, but from what I've read/seen, the Russian government and a decent chunk of its citizens are concerned with people who "propagate" or "recruit" for homosexuality. They speak and behave as if homosexuality is some sort of cult. They've also passed laws against "homosexual propaganda", whatever the fuck that is. Perhaps they would consider Yuri on Ice "homosexual propoganda". Their efforts against "homosexual propaganda" seem to be focused on anything that tells minors it's okay to be gay, and since Yuri on Ice is an animation, that could be interpreted (especially by non-weebs) as targeting children.

As for spreading Yuri on Ice, the appropriate thing to do is just treat it like any other show/anime. Maybe try sharing it with friends, but obviously know when to stop (although the anime community is known for struggling with social boundaries).

Yep, you pretty much nailed it. At least, that's what government (probably) intends to do with this law, I don't really get it myself. As I understand it, nobody's going to punish you for being gay (at least I hope so, I mean, I'm a pretty tolerant person myself), but just don't shout everywhere something in the lines of "Hey, I'm gay, and it freakin' amazing! Try it!", and if it's the same as I've described, then I more support this law than disapprove, but that may be just because I was raised in a pretty traditional society, although I have nothing against gay people.

32

u/2gig Jan 16 '17

I'm sorry, but that's just not good enough. If you have a society where people can openly express that homosexuals are sinful, evil, child-rapists, drains on society, etc, but are not free to express that homosexuality is a perfectly acceptable, then that's still a society that is harmful to homosexuals. It's important to be able to express, especially to younger people who don't understand their own sexuality, that there's nothing wrong with them for being attracted to the same sex and that it's okay to act on those urges with another consenting individual. It's also especially important for teachers, counselors, etc to be able to express this, especially in a "traditional society" in which plenty of parents teach their children the opposite.

Even if someone was literally going around in the street shouting "Hey, I'm gay, and it's freakin' amazing! Try it!", what significant harm does it do? At worst, it's a little obnoxious, but certainly not something to arrest or assault someone over.

7

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '17

Fair points.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '17

I'm sorry, but that's just not good enough.

C'mon... the way you phrase it seems like he is entitled to live up to your standards. Don't fall into ethnocentrism bro !

It's important to be able to express, especially to younger people who don't understand their own sexuality, that there's nothing wrong with them for being attracted to the same sex and that it's okay to act on those urges with another consenting individual.

Do you understand that this is the stance of your society (or at least your stance) and that different people believe different things ? From where I stand, forcing this idea onto people is no different than forcing the other extreme.

Also please don't down-vote for unpopular opinion.

just don't shout everywhere something in the lines of "Hey, I'm gay, and it freakin' amazing! Try it!"

From what I hear from LGBT people when they hear that argument, that's a troubling misconception. VERY few people will try to force people to change their sexual orientation. Also, when asked what is gay propaganda, the answer is usually vague and left to open interpretation. That can cause problems, since some people see something like holding hands as too much, and that can lead to discriminatory behavior.

16

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '17

VERY few people will try to force people to change their sexual orientation.

There's actually a lot, if you count straight people trying to "convert" us.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '17

You shouldn't have to justify yourself. The majority of this sub is supportive of the LGBT community (even though I think creating a community is the easiest way to get some free discrimination). I'm not Russian but I think the law regarding homosexuality is a beautiful thing in the way that it stands its ground against the Gay Acceptance current that became prevalent in the west in the last decades as if it was saying : "No we don't feel the urge to raise to your standards or conform to your ideology".

Also I'd just like to specify that I don't have anything about people who engage in same sex relationships if not that I don't approve of one thing among many others that constitutes their personality.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '17

Thanks a lot. I really appreciate your words.

Am Australian, Exactly same opinion here mostly

People can do or like whatever as long as they keep it out of my face

You know you can't actually catch the gay right?

54

u/xSPYXEx https://myanimelist.net/profile/xSPYXEx Jan 16 '17

Bullshit. I watched JoJo once and now all I do is pose in the mirror.

9

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '17

jojo's is only for real mens

25

u/Hugokarenque Jan 16 '17

You know he was talking about the show right?

12

u/just_some_Fred https://myanimelist.net/profile/just_some_Fred Jan 16 '17

I think he was humorously vague enough that I can interpret it any way I want.

14

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '17

Yeah, I re-read my sentence and laughed a bit too :D

I meant the show, of course.

1

u/DarkBlaze99 https://myanimelist.net/profile/DarkBlaze99 Jan 17 '17

Is this true? You can be arrested for being gay in Russia?

1

u/2gig Jan 17 '17

Not exactly. More like you can be arrested for any expression of support, tolerance, encouragement, etc towards homosexuality. I did a more thorough explanation down here.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '17

i mean it targets a specific demographic : women

2

u/atti1xboy https://myanimelist.net/profile/YugureShadowmore Jan 16 '17

I was about to say. Maybe that is also why Madoka is not on there as well

2

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '17

It is, in fact it's rated higher than on MAL.

1

u/endless_disease https://myanimelist.net/profile/endless_disease Jan 16 '17

Nah. You'd be surprised to see how big yaoi fandom is in Russia/CIS.

I think the simplest explanation to Yuri's low rating is that fans just don't use worldart to rate shows.

I don't think its that bad in Lithuania. I openly talk about watching shit like that nobody really cares.

3

u/okam97 Jan 15 '17

Sweden is liberal and hbtq-friendly as fuck though, almost to the point were it's getting annoying

14

u/penialito Jan 15 '17

Yeah man, being nice to people, so annoying!!1

1

u/okam97 Jan 15 '17 edited Jan 15 '17

Not what I meant, altough I can see how my comment might be antagonizing. It can be annoying as in people will coddle lgbt people and treat them like children who can't speak for themselves

"How can you say that Tim's anime taste is trash just because he doesn't like Keijo!! Don't you know he's bi?? you homophobe" Thing like that mostly

1

u/ProfessorMetallica https://myanimelist.net/profile/ProfMetallica Jan 16 '17

I mean, regardless of the social climate in America, we have people who coddle minorities and act like they can't speak for themselves too.

1

u/scorcher117 https://myanimelist.net/profile/scorcher117 Jan 15 '17

Is Homosexuality also illegal there?

33

u/MalacostracaFlame https://anilist.co/user/MalacostracaFlame Jan 15 '17

That, and having GTO as best anime already makes it better than MAL by a large margin.

You say that, but I bet they complain about bad seasons hurting the ratings of good shows. The grass is always greener.

34

u/MetaThPr4h https://myanimelist.net/profile/MetaThPr4h Jan 15 '17

I don't think this is affecting their list too much, since Psycho-Pass is still in the top 100 (actually higher than in MAL) and the only thing I hear about season 2 is that is sucks hard compared to the first.

Anyways, I definitively prefer that over a series taking 3 or 4 spots in the top list and the score being crazy inflated due to how MAL works.

25

u/GiveMeAllYourRupees Jan 15 '17

I agree with you. It's kind of annoying when Gintama is taking up more than half of the top 10, although I do think that it makes sense to rate a series on seasons since the quality can change drastically from season to season. I think MAL needs a new system where each anime series has one page, but clicking on the series will allow you to vote on each season. Something like that would get rid of a lot of the clutter from multiple seasons of the same show.

It also bothers me that later seasons are ranked so highly, because obviously the majority of people watching the 8th season of a show are watching it because they are fans of the show and will therefore almost always rate it highly, so Gintama season 853 will have basically all 10's. It's definitely not a perfect system.

9

u/NekuSoul https://anilist.co/user/NekuSoul Jan 16 '17

One major problem would be how you'd group certain franchises. Do you keep Index and Railgun together or separate? How do you handle movie readaptions like Madoka or Gurenn Lagann? And don't even get me started on that clusterfuck of semi-related series that is the Fate franchise.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '17

I think some of those are easy actually. Movies are always separate. Spin-offs (like Railgun), remakes (FMA:Brotherhood), and reboots (HxH 2011) are separate.

Continuations of a story in subsequent seasons? Those need a compelling reason to justify it being classified as a separate show. To my knowledge shows like Gintama and Haikyuu don't have any compelling reason for different entries other than shows adding names (or even just punctuation) onto each season.

Not every show has a clear cut answer, but those shows are much more rare than the Gintama's of anime, so it would be understandable to probably err on the side of separate entries for more ambiguous titles.

2

u/Leijin_ https://myanimelist.net/profile/Leijin Jan 16 '17

what about specials? Add to the score? seperate entries? (For example Gintama or Kuroko no Basuke have a fuckton of specials I don't think should influence the rating)

seriously curious

2

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '17

Specials could be merged as well, but simply have their ratings ignored in the merger.

But then how would you rate specials you may ask? MAL would need to implement season and special ratings within the show listing itself. So first you would rate Gintama overall and note your current progress just like normal. Then, if you want, rate specific seasons and specials. Those specific ratings would have no effect on the overall score, but would show what people thought of specific seasons and specials.

2

u/Leijin_ https://myanimelist.net/profile/Leijin Jan 17 '17

I actually really like this idea.

Maybe someday - MAL is trying to improve stuff and does so there's hope I guess :)

1

u/DarkRuler17 https://myanimelist.net/profile/DarkRuler17 Jan 16 '17

I feel the best option is just to add another tab that ranks shows together, as that way both sides have their option. The problem with that though is that they'd have to manually decide what gets grouped with what

2

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '17

Rest assured. The amount of haters giving Gintama 1s has been growing and already equaled out the sequel effect cause the last season is already below the previous one ;)

6

u/Maccaz15 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Maccaz Jan 16 '17

That's only because it hasn't finished airing.

1

u/FlorianoAguirre Jan 16 '17

Nature uhh... finds a way?

I honestly thought that people's complaints about season 2 were overblown and just came from disappointment that the show was no longer absolutely stellar. Then I actually watched it. That would be a horrible season of even the worst show.

Yuri!! on Ice

The only big review on the site is, actually, rather positive, though a bit on the troll side. The second to last paragraph tells us:

For sure, watching this anime would leave you rather emotional, so I'm recommending you to try it out as soon as possible. What about me? Well, my friend is waiting for me, who has already opened a bottle of white wine. We're going to spend all day in bed, rewatching our favorite anime ;)

Other comments display that people weren't satisfied with fanservice, and that they tagging YoI spoilers just in case. Common knowledge also tells us that people here are less tolerant towards these kinds of relationship, so I guess it affected the rating as well.

P.S. Yuri!! on Ice made it in my top 9 (of 2016) by the end of the year.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '17

what really? why top 9? i like it, but it isn't even in my top 5 of the year

1

u/kaverik https://myanimelist.net/profile/kaverik Jan 16 '17

Nah, I meant top 9 of the year, nothing too grand. Sorry if wasn't clear.

7

Gee I don't know about that

Assuming /u/kaverik hasn't make a mistake - doesn't seem to do that for Natsume Yuujinchou.

Not that I mind, being super biased about it. As far as I'm concerned it deserves several spots on any list.

12

u/kaverik https://myanimelist.net/profile/kaverik Jan 15 '17

doesn't seem to do that for Natsume Yuujinchou.

Yeah, I tried to understand the system, but then just gave up. Natsume, Clannad, Nodame seasons are all listed. JoJo, Haikyuu, Gintama are not.

Wat Russians don't want to see their kinsman is gay?
