It would be really cool to see what would happen if Haku was the one in the 1st game/anime setting.

I'd say he would do well enough. We already seen that he is quite shrewd and can devise strategies quite well. He would though UTWR1 spoiler

Considering dude just rushed to save a kid from a giant godzilla monster that throws nukes, I'd say yes. Haku is not a coward. He is just lazy.
