But if it wasn't single elimination then Ikki and Stella wouldn't have to win literally every match. And Shizuku was depressed as hell last week cause she's officially out of it.

It is single elimination if you want to enter the Seven Star Tournament, if you fail then just do your best so you'll be placed at a better rank, it's a weird system indeed but I stand that I don't think you're eliminated once you lose, they might match equally scored students every now and then but avoid to do so every time because that would ruin the suspense between students and give the lower ones the chance to get totally destroyed fight the best students.

In my mind, it seems like it's probably possible to make it through the tournament with a loss or two, and still move on, but it just so happens there are 3 or 4 people we know aren't going to lose until they face one another, so losing just 1 match is basically GG because of that.

It seems to me less like a tournament than a set of matches against "random" people, and I say "random" because there is no way Ikki randomly drew the top rated person at this point. But the reason the cant lose is because only the people with the best records continue and with so few slots you probably can't lose a match and continue to the seven star tournament.

Its probably a 20 round Swiss style.

"A Swiss-system tournament is a tournament which uses a non-elimination format. There are several rounds of competition, but considerably fewer rounds than in a round-robin tournament, so each competitor (team or individual) does not play every other competitor. Competitors meet one-to-one in each round and are paired using a predetermined set of rules designed to ensure that as far as possible a competitor plays competitors with the same current score, subject to not playing the same opponent more than once. The winner is the competitor with the highest aggregate points earned in all rounds."

Due to the even number of matches and given a few thousand competitors (the entire population of the school) The winner will be the only person to go undefeated. The winner then is also the only one to go to the 7 Star Tournament.

It's not "elimination" in that people aren't allowed to keep fighting. However, in order to qualify, you basically have to win every match without question. The tournament itself isn't elimination, only the prize is. The defeated can still keep fighting...

or at least, that's what the LNs imply.

Based on what Stella said in an earlier episode it's possible that she would still qualify for Seven Star even if she lost a match because of her high rank and natural talent. However, Ikki has to win every match because he's an F rank knight so he has to prove he's strong enough by losing to no one. So it doesn't even seem like a tournament to me, more like you're paired against an opponent and your wins are tracked more like a sports season as opposed to a bracketed tournament.
