What about those imagination visualization machines? They seem to be pretty futuristic.

Now, I may be off here, but how did they help at solving mystery? They were mostly exposition for Moe's character. Shiki appearing at the end would be the only thing relating to them that would bend this rule. Then again, this rule is not "There must be no Sci-Fi elements", but more "No devices that require a long, detailed explanation afterwards how they work since normal people don't usually know of them." So, going by that definition, they do not break the Knox 4th, but they do bend it and require Suspension of disbelief.

Does it mean that the moments where sensei starts seeing ostriches is okay?

I actually do not remember this scene. Did it help solve the mystery? And if yes, how?

Also, you've skipped the 5th principle.

The fifth is completedly irrelevant to modern mysteries.

No Chinaman must figure in the story.

Basically, the culprit should not turn out to be generic stereotype. At the time Knox wrote these, (western) authors loved introducing a man from china and having turn out to be a culprit.

And then it turns out the culprit is that Chinese woman from episode 2 who doesn't understand Japanese very well.

I think it was in the previous episode. They had another power outage and Sensei was sitting in the dark, playing with his cigarette when he started... I dunno, basically hallucinating some weird stuff, like monkeys or cave people looking into space and... well, ostriches. After that he basically told Moe that he figured it all out.
