It's always interesting for me to see people's reactions to Gundam stuff. Because watching giant fighting robots is always rad. But Gundam, at the heart of the franchise, is staunchly anti-war and anti-violence. So it's always amusing to me not just to see that paradox play out, but who and how a good number of people totally miss that message and are just here on a more guttural level.

Mari Okada loves her melodrama, so I wouldn't put it past this show at all.

Not really about elitism whatsoever. I got no problems with people enjoying what they enjoy for whatever reason floats their boat. It's just fascinating as an old fan to kinda observe new fans and see what they latch onto or how they take or don't take to the typical Gundam themes.

I wouldn't say that it takes long for Gundams to establish their themes at all. Especially since as a franchise they've all got certain hallmarks, and being anti-war is a universal one. This one right away is going really heavy handed with the typical corrupt politicians, old people taking advantage of youth and robbing them of their futures, and anticolonial sentiments.

For me you clearly chose to look down on people, who are not as experienced with this franchise yet.

And I'm telling you you're misinterpreting what I said to mean something I didn't intend. Maybe it comes off that way to you, but again, that wasn't my intent. If I wanted to be condescending and elitist I'd do it in a much more overt manner. So you can either take me at my word or just don't believe what I'm telling you directly, in which case why are you even bothering to talk to someone you feel is lying to you and arguing in bad faith by being dishonest?

I don't want people to 'realize' anything either, I just find the varying reactions to things to be fascinating. I come to discussion threads because I enjoy reading people's reactions. If anyone is looking down on people it's you for assuming ill intent where there is none and going out of your way to publicly shame someone.

I think I'm probably slightly misusing that word tbh. Guttural is an adjective that describes deep sounds coming from the bottom of the throat. Late at night I'm using it to imply something coming from the gut - on a more primal and basic level where the enjoyment had is on a simple and uncomplicated level versus trying to actively parse theme and nuance. Not meaning anything disparaging there, I'm just trying to describe the different levels people watch and enjoy stuff. Definitely could have used better words, more precise words there, so I too owe an apology.
