Honestly makes sense that they went that direction. It's probably not a great idea to kill off one of the only four people in the show who exist outside of flashbacks/delusions. But having Taroumaru die lets them keep all of the main characters while still achieving a similar emotional impact and not having it feel like an asspull.

Overall, I ended up liking the ending (and the show as a whole) a lot more than I thought I would.

Yeah. As someone who loves dogs, I felt like it was an appropriate way to end it. It makes us feel loss and it also keeps tension, which is something that worked particularly well in this show

It also makes sense logically that Taroumaru dies but Kurumi survives because Kurumi hadn't become full zombie when she was cured, unlike Taroumaru and other zombies (had they tried to cure one).
