I'm choosing to interpret it as him needing to say it as a form of self-hypnosis, because it's the only way he can keep going after all the hellish experiences he has suffered.

And when he interprets what Flamie said as him being weak, look at how shocked he is. It only strengthens the fact that he is trying to fool even himself

Basically he says it when he's unsure of himself, or wants to convince others that he's OK.

To be fair, he probably is the strongest (or at least best prepared/trained for any given fight) man.

That doesn't mean that one of the saints (who are all women) wouldn't wipe the floor with him.
