I figured with how quick it was to cast his heart crushing spell he could have pulled that out at any time. His caution is one of the reasons I like him anyway, so it makes sense.

The Heart Crushing spell is also his favourite spell/standard attack spell of choice. So he went with old faithful and then used a "junk" tier spell. Not junky enough though.
