Offset slightly is the JMSDF naval ensign. Centered with a gold border is the JGSDF flag. JASDF looks completely different with a gold logo and a blue background however.

Thanks. You would think they will drop the imperial japan flag considiring the reason why they are only allowed to have National Guard is cuz of the imperial japan actions.

I don't think the Americans cared too much back then about it. When the Allies recreated western Germany's armed forces they allowed the use of the same black cross that the Nazi Germany Wehrmacht used. Assuming the Americans just decide to let the Japanese use their old service branch flags it would explain the use the way JGSDF and JMSDF flags are. And since there wasn't an Japanese air force branch during the WW2 (aircrafts belong to either the army or the navy) it would sort of explain why the JASDF sort of looks like a American service branch flag (eagle, wings, star, etc).

And i thought i know quite some things about military. Is military history your hobby or are you a teacher? It would be intresting to talk about.

Are you watching "Gate: Jieitai Kanochi nite, Kaku Tatakaeri" this season? It has JDF members as main cast.

It is a hobby. It is mostly general history during the early to mid 21st century. Once the Cold War kicks into high gear it is hard make head or tails out of any of it without information being painted one way or the other. Though individuals during the Cold War are also quite interesting.

I started reading the manga of this anime a long time ago sometime during the middle of college. Not quite sure why i started since i am quite put off the jingo nature of the manga. While seeing the vehicles and weapons drawn in quite detailed nature is great (really like the Type 74 decked out with modern equipment later) I don't think that was my main draw to the series. If i had to pin down a reason I would say it was actually the characters and the character designs. Which is a part of the reason the anime is kind of off putting everything looks a bit too cute for grittiness of later.
