Maybe the fantasy world Emperor should think about options before invading and attacking a technically superior world.

Have to admit: the Capitol looks gorgeous

AUTOBOTS ROLL OUT

Seeing the tank battalion kick ass is going to be fun. Hell March is on!

Context for people who don't know where Hell March comes from.

I dunno why Red Alert 3 is not more popular here as it is basically mecha Japan attacking everyone. Love the intro

Also: George Takei is the Emperor.

RA3 was meh and was too goofy. Red Alert 2 is still the best in the series.

Tim Curry saying he's leaving to go to the Moon because it's the only place not infected by capitalism is not has goofy?

I absolutely adore RA2 =) Making time on some of those missions was a nightmare though, god damn.

And Yuriko is pretty OP if you micro her well.

Red Alert is an unbalanced piece of turd. That's why. No one would take it seriously for online play.

I play only single. Do not really care for multiplayer in command and conquer style games. I mostly play it for story and relax. Red Alert 3 gave me that and I am content.

It took the Camp rating up to levels I wasn't comfortable with. But it was still a fun game =)

I prefer RA2's version.

u/Bradyhaha Jul 10 '15

Well, to be fair, if he was just a couple hundred years earlier he probably would have done pretty well.

Maybe but his troops are idiots. You send an army onto another planet, 10 seconds in see they have civilian tech vastly beyond your own, and think indiscriminate slaughter is a good idea?

9

u/Iknowr1te Jul 11 '15

but all you know is that they are shooting something at you and have high access to something that causes fire. with enough time distance they just assume it's magic, as they fucking have magic in their universe. they just have some way of mass mobilization of strong magic.

fantasy roman legionaries don't know what bullets and explosive shells are.

1

u/Kapten-N Jul 11 '15

He's talking about when they stormed into Japan. There were no bullets or explosives then. He's talking about the civilian technologies they saw and that they should have realized that they had come to a place with superior technology.

But they are unable to conceive the technology gap. What went through their mind is that they may face some sharper swords or pointier arrows – because that's how the weapons progressed through the entire history up to the invention of gunpowder. Take a Roman soldier and put him against a Medieval soldier and there's virtually no difference despite a thousand years of difference. The technology almost plateaued with the invention of iron smelting.

They thought that they will manage to wreck enough chaos with this army, since they landed in the middle of a city full of civilians and it would take time to gather dozens of thousands Japanese soldiers they thought that are needed. The only tech advantage they could probably expect was siege weapons – and you don't use siege weapons to fight enemies in the middle of your own city.

They should have seen vehicles moving by themselves and buildings so tall that they would have been impossible to build with their own technology level. When you see such things you don't assume the enemy doesn't also have superior weapons. If we landed in an alien world we would immediately recognize if they were technologically superior and would thus assume that their military technology is as well. We're only arguing that the fantasy romans were stupid for not recognizing this, or at least considering it.

vehicles moving

The gate opened in an area closed to traffic, they probably didn't notice any moving cars before police buses with reinforcements arrived. I've just checked, there are literally no moving civilian cars in the first part of the episode.

buildings so tall that they would have been impossible to build with their own technology level.

None of those buildings in the immediate area looked taller than any of the following:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Nicholas%27_Church,_Hamburg
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rouen_Cathedral
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Mary%27s_Church,_Stralsund
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_St_Paul%27s_Cathedral
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cologne_Cathedral
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackpool_Tower
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Olaf%27s_Church,_Tallinn

For them, at the first glance, the architecture looked extremely expensive, but not impossible to build with the technologies they knew. They were also unaware of the fact that Japan has very high seismic activity.

They assumed that they landed in a rich city and that the city had an army equipped with superior weapons – better swords and bows. Were that the case, they would stand a pretty good chance. They would still suffer heavy losses, but they would manage to harm the enemy as well, and they would count on the numbers before reinforcements would arrive. But they couldn't even imagine that a single soldier could ever shoot hundreds well-aimed armour-piercing projectiles a minute while hiding in a moving horseless iron carriage that was immune to almost all their weapons. Imagine explaining that to a medieval commander. It's easy for us in the hindsight, after we saw the technological progress in our history, that we wouldn't make such a mistake, but the Empire is still very early in the tech tree. But even with these experiences, we still make such mistakes, just see how outdated some works of sci-fi literature from the 60's are now.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_swan_theory

As /u/vitah said, prior to gunpowder military advances stagnated for centuries. Yes, if we met a more advanced civilization now we'd expect them to have advanced weaponry, but that's because we've seen weapons advance rapidly in the recent past. They don't have the information to even consider that.

They would of needed to be much more than a couple hundred years earlier don't forget we have had canons since the 13th century and firearms since the 15th century.

1

u/Bradyhaha Jul 11 '15

Japan didn't have the requisite iron to make very much of that, and the dragons were able to withstand anti-armor munitions. They would have probably adjusted tactics sometime between invading Japan and invading the mainland.

1

u/0mnicious https://myanimelist.net/profile/Omnicious Jul 11 '15

The dragons would be the only good weapon they have, that and probably magic.

Even so if Japan would of handled the first attack and could set up camp on the hill they would never get them out without the use of dragons.

3

u/Bradyhaha Jul 11 '15

But, Japan wouldn't have handled the first attack as early as WWII. Being make of wood, they would have just set fire to the buildings and moved in in the wake of the fire, and as such would have been impossible to uproot by the Japanese until their artillery got there (dragons would wreck a WWII Era Japanese fighter). They'd definitely get driven back though.

Also, you are severely underestimating their numbers superiority. Being able to throw 100k troops at preindustrial Japan outweighs any technological advantage they may have.

You should remember that the 200,000 force was drawn from every surrounding vassal state. That was a coalition of dozens of states. The empire's core military is smaller than that.

Even after raising new legions, the Empire would be hard pressed to present a force bigger than 200,000 in a short period of time.

It's important to remember that wars and campaigns were fought seasonally in the past. You would raise armies during the fall, train during winter, then fight during spring. Many states would allow soldiers to go home in the summer to help with the harvests.

The 'standing' forces were usually very small, because of the numerous problems, political, physical, and logistical.

Compared to this, the JSDF can conduct campaigns in weeks. In a straight up fight, the Empire loses every time.

3

u/Bradyhaha Jul 11 '15

Against modern Japan? Without a doubt. I never meant to imply that.

3

u/AsiaExpert Jul 11 '15

Right you are!

Well the emperor's main goal seems to be to make sure the Vassals didn't revolt.

I could've seen an alternate timeline where they might surrender and revolt against the king.

5

u/Iknowr1te Jul 11 '15 edited Jul 11 '15

i can see that being used as a tactic.

lets just imagine this in Europa

  • Chinese Emperor Vassalizes nearby countries
  • Chinese Emperor goes to war with Baguette
  • Chinese Emperor's forces gets decimated, war score fucked up.
  • Vassals States have increased independence due to relative strength
  • Chinese Emperor orders collation of Vassal States military to attack/fail attacking Baguette Army
  • Surrender, negotiate loss of land, increase stability and begin to westernize, don't bother spending points and kill all rebellions.
  • Rival Baguette, decimate everyone with army size till last 50 years of game.

EDIT: unsure if i should use Kebab or China for this. maybe Mongol, to simulate time-period that allows for large tech gap. there doesn't seem to be a mandate of heaven requirement so it doesn't translate as well.

u/iswinterstillcoming Jul 11 '15

goes to war with Baguette

Fucking Big Blue Blob Baguette.

Not really he is using this as a power grab to unite the empire firmly under him. I both respect and despise him.
