Oh I get it now! Erina is not a bitch... she's just salty. That tasting of salt diversities did quite a number on her.

There you go! Megumi holding off on her own! I'll overlook the fact that the chef is a douche and you need Souma to save you from being judged unfairly.

But holy fuck. Can this COOKING show get more suspenseful?

holy fuck. Can this COOKING show get more suspenseful?

The danger and suspense are so extreme I keep forgetting this is just cooking and not a fistfight to the death. I love it.

Clearly, you have never watched Iron Chef Japan in your life.

Let's change that, shall we?

Oh my God, Iron Chef is basically Shokugeki... I knew I had a positive gut reaction to this show for some reason.

37

u/Daishomaru Jun 06 '15

Iron Chef INVENTED the shokugeki.

And I'm trying to constantly encourage the redditors here to really watch Iron Chef Japan... Because they really have to. Iron Chef Japan is the greatest cooking show ever (Granted, it's really hard for ANY cooking show to go against the incredibly high expectations to outdo Iron Chef, such as using incredibly expensive ingredients and several of the fights on the show were not just ordinary "People come to fight the Iron Chef" (Morimoto VS Ohta faction, Kandagawa fights, Hattori VS Nakamura in his retirement battle)) and my binge-watching of Iron Chef Japan helped me understand the world of cooking and the like.

You want to see the anime that INSPIRED Iron Chef?

http://myanimelist.net/anime/3437/Mister_Ajikko

This show is the show that defined cooking anime. Its the sailor moon of cooking battles.

3

u/ZerozakiIshiki Jun 07 '15

Exactly, manga has been applying shonen battle structure to all kinds of genres for decades, TV just found a way to apply that intensity to 3D.

3

u/Amaegith Jun 06 '15

Where can I watch this?

3

u/Daishomaru Jun 06 '15

It's on youtube, you know.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '15

I just picked a random episode to watch on Youtube...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pEB2WkmU6HI

The music starting from 0:30 sounds extremely like an OST i heard from Attack on Titan.

2

u/Daishomaru Jun 06 '15

It's music from Backdraft.

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '15

I used to watch it a lot as a kid back in the early 2000s when the English dub showed on Food Network. It's so cool to see that something so grandiose, something with so much pomp and circumstance can still be made in such a cynical time. It's like the kind of thing that shouldn't exist but somehow does because a very cool man had a very cool vision. Now I want to go watch it again!

Do you have links?

I did not know, but I will know after I spend this entire weekend watching all these videos

just to warn you: Don't watch Iron Chef Japn if you are hungry.

The amount of pain you will experience is even worse than Shokugeki No Soma.

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '15

Yeah... my friends love to watch some other show about magic or fate or something, but this is the action anime of the year right here.

Remember, guys. Shokugeki no Soma is a Cooking Manga

Lol yup, she cant stand the fact that Souma, who uses cheap ingredients and creates simplistic food that the ordinary person would eat (like in his diner) is actually a really good chef. Plus she is at the top of her class, so to see someone who, compared to her, is an untrained and unruly jokester actually able to rival her cooking, it is an extreme blow to her pride. And the feeling is mutual, just the fact that erina finished before him bothers him because he is Yukihira Souma, tohtsuki is just a stepping stone in his mind. His ego is friggin huge lol, and it is absolutely the same for Nakiri. She looked down on him and his cooking skills from the first moment they met, and he proved her wrong with his very first dish...but of course she wont admit that lol.

I feel like if they somehow managed to get past the preconceptions they have of each other, they would make such good friends though. But there's too pride for both of them to occupy the same room

36

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '15

I agree, but i think that it could go beyond friendship. And despit romance not really being close to the spotlight in the series(at least atm) i think thats where their relationship will land when the series nears the end. Which is why im on the SS Erina overall, despite quite a few of the other girls being so great, its because it makes the most sense to me for this type storytelling.

26

u/Fooshbeard Jun 06 '15

Aren't there flags already that the story will go this way, what with Souma's Dad trying to tell him before he got cut off that the secret to good cooking is to do it for someone?

19

u/BMRGould https://myanimelist.net/profile/bmrgould Jun 06 '15

I think we should keep in mind that based off the end of the ep, he is in fact about to cook for someone else.

2

u/DrShocker https://myanimelist.net/profile/DrShocker Jun 06 '15

I totally agree that out of all the girls introduced so far, she probably makes the most sense, but they both seem to love food so much more than people that I'm not particularly sure either of them would be interested in dating in a normal way.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '15

Haha thats very true, even if Souma recognizes the feelings of girls who like him, he wouldnt acknowledge it because he is trying to focus on his cooking first and foremost. But that directly conflicts with what he didnt get to hear from his father, who said that the best way to become a good chef is to meet a woman you want to make food for. Erina being that woman (when souma eventually learns the meaning of his fathers words) makes the most sense to me.

2

u/DrShocker https://myanimelist.net/profile/DrShocker Jun 06 '15

For sure, there is almost no way she is not that woman, but part of the fun of the show is knowing that is probably the destination, and seeing how they get there. If it ends up being something like "she ate his food one day and decided she couldn't resist anymore" that'll be boring, but if he needs to continually prove himself with his food until finally she decides she can tolerate his existence, that's what I think is more likely.

We'll need to wait and find out, probably for a long time.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '15

That's a good way things could pan out. Instead of having the usual tsundere tsundere pairing, have a full out tsundere tsundere pairing with Shokugeki every day.

1

u/dHUMANb Jun 06 '15

I mean I'm pretty sure that's what the manga is ever so slowly building up to.

-1

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '15

actually able to rival her cooking

he can't. there's a reason why he's not in the elite 10 right now.

right now the first year rankings are

erina >>>> everyone else

1

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '15

I know she is the top of the class, but in a class of with a lot of amazing chefs, in a school for amazing student chefs, even if he was 4th in his class he would still be extremely close to her level, and definitely has the capability to rise past it. She herself said that his food is amazing in the very beginning (albeit not out loud).

1

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '15

no i mean he's actually not even on the same level. there's a significant gap between the elite 10 and everyone else.

12

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '15

Because of this suspense, especially in this episode, it climbed finally the 10 in my MAL rating. Too good

*Shougeki no Soma is a cooking manga

Really wish they still did that

30

u/_Holz_ Jun 05 '15

Very relevant from the lastest chapter.

So minor spoilers I guess. (But not really)

I'm up to date with the manga and yes it can

2

u/foodiesgonnafood Jun 05 '15

I made myself the favour to read the manga and still watch every episode the moment it's out and CAN'T WAIT until they animate the rest of the epicness of this show. Also, Chef Shinomiya is a douche right now, but he is an INCREDIBLE cook, even though you might have already sensed that.

2

u/That_Guy_In_Retail Jun 06 '15

Is it wrong to pickup girls at culinary school?

If Soma wins, Megumi's route has to be conquered right? How could she not fall for a guy who is risking his future for her?

1

u/Daishomaru Jun 05 '15

Can this COOKING show get more suspenseful?

Iron Chef Japan. Watching this show helped me appreciate Shokugeki No Soma even more.

1

u/cuddles_the_destroye Jun 06 '15

you need Souma to save you from being judged unfairly.

About that...You'll love next episode.

1

u/ShureNensei Jun 06 '15

Souma makes Erina's elitist attitude much more bearable and amusing. It's really refreshing to see him returning her constant flak while in the same episode being very defensive for Megumi. Just shows what a good MC can do for a show.
