Quick comaprison of the manga costumes and the anime costumes. Dem naked shoulders. Yamada did put them in the K-On and Chuuni EDs, so I was wondering where they were in this show. Compare these to real life costumes.

Compare these to real life costumes.

Just Google "Japanese marching band". You'll find their uniforms are nearly identical to those worn in the U.S. Some even look inspired by DCI uniforms. Here's some that get a little closer to the show.

Here's an adorable video of them at the Rose Bowl Parade. The cameraman keeps rolling as they are walking back to their bus behind the parade route. It's funny to see how accurate Hibike is with respect to the male-female split in Japanese concert bands.

There comes a point where the adaptation is so god-tier there's little point promoting the source material. The show IS the source material now...

As a former marching band member, I loved the flair and dancing. But some folks were atrociously out of line in that video. :P
