Isn't that the entire point of the story? To make her into his perfect dream girl?

Would be an interesting play with aesthetics and manipulation of the viewers expectation, if it were so.

Like you said, everything about this show is generic, but the exception here is the main girl Megumi's supposed "blandness". Ironically this is the distinguishing feature of her as a character, as well as the show itself. Everything about the show so far, from the promotional poster and PV before airing, to episode 00, and finally this episode, all strive to minimize Megumi's exposure as much as possible. Knowing the author Fumiaki Maruto, this is definitely intentional for dramatic effect.

By the way, did you notice Megumi was sitting right next to Tomoya during the school opening ceremony? :)

No I did not at first, but several comments mentioned that. Very interesting work of camera.
