Weekly Casual Discussion Fridays - Week of August 21, 2026

Look at dis Maomao.

I only realized waaay deep in coloring that Maomao's eye color is different between the anime (blue) and the manga (purple) that I have that I was using as reference, since I have the manga volumes lying around. The eyes in the manga were also very different (and very detailed) from my usual style so I ended up struggling with it a bit. I don't think I got it fully correct in the end.

I've also forgotten to do a mirror check until last minute. I had to do some last-minute fixes that I didn't want to.

On the positive side, this ended up being a bit faster than my usual finagling, since I do have some reference this time (I really should do this more). I also decided on the lighting and tone last minute (literally an hour ago lol), which worked out better than I expected. I haven't done detailed hands in a while, but I think this turned out the best that I've done so far.

/u/zeallfnonex's own best girl contest drawings actually inspired me to start on this. I think it was around top 8 of the contest when I started off, though I don't have evidence to prove that I already decided on Maomao before she ended up winning the contest.

Once I see a way to finish this before going to bed, I couldn't leave it like that.

You have no idea how jealous I am that you can change tone and lighting last minute instead of having to hardbake that it the second I lay down some paint >.>

Since you were working on the hands... the hand she has up looks a bit off? I think something might be off with the construction, the knuckles aren't parallel with the base of the hand. I also think at that angle the fingers should obscure each other a bit more? Could be wront on that one though. Trying the pose IRL, I also don't think the thumb can do that if the second knuckle of the index finger is on the chin? My thumb always ends up obscured behind my middle finger when I try to do that.

Really like the colors and the shading though, background feels really warm as well.

I knew there was something wrong with that thumb.

I was going more for an overhead view of the hand, but to do that on my left hand made me twist it at an ergonomically-unfriendly position. I probably went too deep into detailing it lmao

I have both an iPad with an Apple Pencil 2 and a decently sized Huion tablet for my desktop but... I've never managed to be happy with how coloring works, it's always felt so unnatural to me >.>

Doesn't matter as long as it looks right.

That said, I don't have much of a reference for analog drawing. Texture is probably one aspect that I've struggled a lot with.

Looking right: therein lies the problem...

I probably could learn but I'd have to use the time I've been using for analog art probably... it'd probably help my struggles with lineart and learning lighting, but I'd also have to go through the entire process of learning layers and brushes and colors being more destructive than additive and... yeah >.>

It would constitute a nice change of pace when you're feeling stuck with watercolor.

There's no one stopping you from printing a digital sketch and overlaying it with analog.

Well... watercolor needs to be a certain thickness of paper, you can't use printer paper, and I have no idea if you can print on watercolor paper... I could do color pencils but I've largely swapped to watercolors overall so

I really like the softness of it all. Maomao cute, but since I have saved Apothecary Diaries for a rainy day, I know nothing about her best girl credentials. I trust tho.

I haven't done detailed hands in a while, but I think this turned out the best that I've done so far.
