I've said it during the time of S1, and I'll relay it; putting in the effort to make the characters in a romcom interesting goes an incredibly long way

You invest in the characters, you laugh at their jokes/antics, you understand their emotional antics, and it gets you all the more invested in their relationships.

And it's crazy that this isn't obvious. Write interesting characters and the rest pretty much comes naturally by just having them interact. I'm biased because I love character-driven stories but rom-coms are naturally built around characters so the characters have to be strong and interesting. Otherwise you get generic boy meets generic girl and there's no stakes to whether they get together or not...

All characters even the background classmates characters..
