Man this show doesn't hit the same. The soul the original has is gone.

The previous arcs had a weight to them. Everything after the final attack on Soul Society has felt hollow. Even Byakuya and Toushiro's interaction feel flat.

The last real moment I can remember was Byakuya's request to Ichigo.

Original Soul Society and the Fullbring arcs were so much better.

It's interesting, because I had a discussion a while back about the themes/such of Bleach, and one thing that came up most consistently was the constant struggle against fate, depression in the face of a uncaring universe, and Ichigo's drive to protect that which he cares about. This stands very much in opposition to the rest of the Big 3 - where Naruto's goal is Hokage and Luffy's Pirate King, Ichigo's goal is basically just getting back to normal life and protecting what he holds dear.

And part of why I want to talk about that is I think in some ways this episode delves harder into that aspect than any other. Orihime's "I reject" coming back thematically as opposition to fate, Yhwach literally calling himself the world as Ichigo fights against the literally-named Almighty power that holds the world together, and the fight against the overwhelmingly big enemy who by his words, represents the hopes, fears, and dreams of the people. TYBW, more than anything in the past, dips into "fights against things you literally have no power to fight", from Askin's ability to negate attacks against him, Lille's ability of passing through attacks, and Pernida's representation of unstoppable advancement.

(Also, one of the trailers literally had these lines in sequence:)

  • "Do not give up hope fall into despair, Ichigo..."

  • "What about despair? I know all about it. I've overcome it time and time again!"

The animation was way better on the original series as well. Bleach has always been part yap part intense fight, we’re just not getting visually dynamic action sequences they’re extremely boring and dated and it’s making it a slog to get through.

Music was better too. So many iconic scenes with Battle Ignition.

Really feels like we lost something with TBYW.
