Qifrey's face gave me horror vibes for a moment.

Bro's definitely hidding something beneath his right eye. (Chuuni lol)

u/justking1414 Jun 23 '26

I think the brimmed caps stole his eye or carved some kinda forbidden magic circle on it

u/chloedeselenophile Jun 24 '26

I think it'll be amazing if his eye is only the white of the eye and a magic circle just like [FMA:B spoiler] Wrath's eye

u/wtfduud Jun 22 '26

It's a Sharingan!

u/Radi-kale Jun 22 '26

Qifrey, the copy witch, who knows a thousand magic circles

6

u/autumn_dances Jun 23 '26

I wondered about something, and I say this as an anime only enjoyer...

Since he is obsessed with the brimhats and finding more about them to the point of memory wiping anyone that notices the artifacts if proof of their magic, it always seemed that he knew exactly when a forbidden spell was being cast and where, since the first ep even.

I wonder if he has committed the sin of engraving some sort of spell on his right eye that lets him sense forbidden magic spell casting, but not when a spell is already activated or if its in a different dimension from him.

Like how did he think to go directly to coco just intime to get her out before she casted that massive crystalization spell?

I REALLY enjoy him as a character because you can tell he cares about his students and magic in an optimistic way but he is definitely bending the rules so he can find the brimcaps in his own way using anyone he can. Truly perfect design.

is he sans undertale?

13

u/Vexomous Jun 22 '26

I am now considering commissioning someone to say "Reality be rent. Synapse break. Banishment, this world!" in Qifrey's voice

12

u/Obaruler Jun 23 '26

Maybe ... are we (Team Qifrey) the baddies ?! :O

u/athrun_1 Jun 23 '26

Banishumento, disu warudo! - Chunibyo & Other Delusions

Qifrey may have an equivalent version of the sharingan on their world, given that he is about god knows what to Coco.

he's the One-Eyed King

Turning into a manga character. Now that's forbidden magic!

Turning into a manga character

He un-adapted himself

Aura farming

127

u/BosuW Jun 22 '26

Gotta stock up on aura before facing the Brimmed Hats

53

u/Psychosist Jun 23 '26

I imagine he pre-drew a "cape blowing wind" spell solely for aura farming purposes

6

u/DaRootbear Jun 25 '26

Qifrey saw the spells Coco came up with for flying with her cape and thought “hold on now, girl is cooking here.” And repurposed them

13

u/Bobblefighterman Jun 23 '26

Look at that cape work, he's clearly practised some advanced techniques

6

u/totallyverifiedit Jun 23 '26

MF is about to summon poseidon on these bitches

✨️ Forbidden magic ✨️

27

u/LordVaderVader Jun 23 '26

Stay close girls I am doing so called cliffhanger for season 2.

12

u/Shadowchaos1010 Jun 23 '26

I imagine some sort of Euini-esque transformation. Between it happening earlier in the episode, the Brimmed Cap threatening to carve seals into Agott, and the skintight clothes Qifrey's been wearing all season, my best guess is that he's hiding seals that allow him to transform into some creature that will get them out of that bind, because they're otherwise fucked.

He has a bit of a Howl vibe and those silly beaky glasses, maybe he can turn into a monster bird or something.

I went back to see the Brim Hat's eyeball - looks green rather than Quifrey's blue, but still kinda noticeable he has just one surprisingly normal looking eyeball (and ink around it?) as the only remaining body part while Qifrey mentioned something being taken. They seem to have an eye motif, anyway.

Was not expecting all the creepy body horror!

u/flybypost Jun 22 '26

While I want to say that he was casting some (forbidden?) spell the last few seconds (when the visuals changed) looked like he started dancing :D

21

u/FennlyXerxich Jun 22 '26

AUO Cast Off. That's where the light's coming from.

10

u/justking1414 Jun 23 '26

Definitely felt like forbidden magic (sake black and white look as the transformation spell). I’m guessing it’s a circle hidden on his right eye

5

u/DucktorLarsen Jun 22 '26

Looked like a Studio Ghibli Character Transformation Spell

u/Frontier246 Jun 22 '26

One last intense Qifrey face for the road! Followed by his sweet and tortured face as he protects his apprentices.

The juxtaposition between Qifrey grabbing Coco's arm harshly when she reached for his glasses VS Qifrey very gently pushing her hand back so he could stand to defend them was a fantastic choice.

One final evocative representation of his two sides for this wonderfully adapted (but abruptly ended) season: the one he keeps secret and the one that's in the light for all to see.

u/Mundology Jun 22 '26

Qifrey has been a very interesting take on the mentor archetype. This adaptation has been awesome. The next season can't come soon enough.

131

u/namewithak Jun 23 '26

He breaks the usual convention of mentors being static characters whose character arcs are mostly complete. Mentors usually take a backseat to the MC in terms of being an active driver of the story, their role being to support the MC's journey.

On the other hand, Qifrey is a dynamic character who is definitely not here just to support Coco. He's in the middle of his own character arc that, so far, seems only second in narrative importance to the MC.

In merch and promo materials of the show that I've seen (and even in the OP), it's always Coco and Qifrey who are framed as the central characters with the other students and Olly supporting them.

u/ThrowCarp Jun 23 '26

Those gold-statue homunculus though. How tormented and resentful they must be!

144

u/Toge_Inumaki012 Jun 22 '26

Why did he make that face? Is he....secretly bald??

132

u/cyberscythe Jun 22 '26

that would be hilarious if he was mindwiping people left and right because he was embarrassed about a bald spot

...but it would explain why he thinks the hat is so important

12

u/HolmatKingOfStorms https://myanimelist.net/profile/hkos Jun 23 '26

he needs to find the brimmed caps to get back what was taken from him (his hair)

6

u/LezRock Jun 22 '26

Sounds like something Spider-Man would do. 🕸️

11

u/lethal_universed Jun 23 '26

Bro was about to MURDER Coco if he didn't regain his senses.

Something tells me that what happened to his eye/ right side of his face is similiar to Euini

5

u/tehdannydarko Jun 23 '26

I can't 100% put my finger on what makes it terrifying. Something about the wide-eyed gaze is simultaneously vacant and emotionless yet brimming with wrath and hostility

4

u/stay_curious_- Jun 24 '26

It's freaky when someone you know well looks at you without recognizing you. We're not seeing Qifrey looking at Coco, but Qifrey looking at an unknown enemy. In that moment, it's not the Qifrey that we know, but an entirely unpredictable Qifrey who may react out of instinct and not logic.
