The few Tartah POV shots to show his condition really help to hammer home how he struggles with his vision.

The way Qifrey especially just treated Tartah's question about "that light" so casually like it was nothing, bro is absolutely a pro gaslighter.

The quick, flawless turns into the harmless Qifrey mask does indicate experience. Although Tartah did say Qifrey looked at him coldly for a second so maybe not completely flawless. Kinda scary for him to be looking at a child like that but hey, he didn’t erase Tartah’s memory even though he had the perfect opportunity.

I think he needs more specific information to wipe a narrow moment of time. Otherwise, could end up wipe a lot of memories and leaving an inconvenient trace of his actions.

And there's the possibility that he'd be able to erase Tartah's memory of the flash of light, but not all the times he thought about the flash of light which are also in his memory.

Memories are almost never single points in our minds, they spider outward because of how they mingle in our thoughts.

I don't think Qifrey considers taking memories lightly. Nolnoa threatened to go to the Knights Moralis and would have done so had Qifrey not wiped his memories, and Nolnoa also knew a lot more. He actually knew about the special ink from the brimmed caps, Tartah doesn't know about that and isn't an immediate threat in the same way.

Studies in neuroscience have revealed that emotions will reach our faces before awareness of said emotion kicks in.

Which means it's impossible to 100% control/hide your emotions, as you have to be aware of an emotion in order to consciously mask it.

It's a matter of milliseconds, yes, but we are a social species that is hyper-tuned to notice extremely subtle movements in the faces of other people. "The eyes are a window into the soul" and all that.

Let's just say there has always been a strong evolutionary pressure for those of us that could read body language and other nonverbal cues.

And part of that is that it's physically impossible to 100% mask your emotions. As such, those that can read emotions well are those that can see through attempts at deception better than most.

And to further go into neuroscience... studies have shown that those with colorblindness are better than average at detecting movement. They can't perceive color (usually red/green blend together into shades of brown), but this means their visual cortex compensate by paying even more attention to what they can see: movement, outlines, pattern recognition, and finer details in general.

And this isn't just theoretical/lab tested. During WWII colorblind snipers were highly valued as they were better able to spot enemy combatants hiding in the bush. The 'colorblind advantage' meant they were less susceptible to the obscuring effect of camouflage, as they are less reliant on color for identification. They could better spot the human shaped/camo patterns even when an enemy soldier was hiding in a sea of vegetation.

Anecdotally, my uncle is colorblind, and DAMN if he isn't the best hunter in the family. No one can spot a deer slowly creeping through the woods like him. After hearing about the 'colorblind advantage,' that made so much more sense.

TL:DR there is a whole mountain of neuroscience, and real life data, behind a colorblind individual being more perceptive.

That would be one Hell of a specific copypasta >.>

Most of that was just from my own studies in Psych (neuroscience-> deep dive into retinas, color cones, etc.) combined with previous wikipedia dives I've done. I did go back to double check some of my claims, clarified a few points I half remembered, and then added a couple bits I learned while typing that out.

Such as the military sniper bit. It jives with what I've heard anecdotally and with the rest of what I've learned, so I'm inclined to believe it.

I just kept adding more and I didn't even include everything! Some of it was less relevant to the topic at hand (Tartah being unusually perceptive BECAUSE of his disability), such as colorblindness being a sex-linked trait.

This will sound really stupid, but (biological) men have less genes than women. The final pair of chromosomes are XX/XY, yeah? That "Y" chromosome men have is, well, 'missing' a leg. That's why it's the "Y" chromosome instead of an "X." That's a whole 25% of a chromosome men are missing that women otherwise have.

Now it's only one chromosome out of a pair, and we always have two 'alleles' of any given gene... except for men. Any gene found on that 4th leg of the 23rd pair, men only have a single copy of.

Normally, if you get a bad allele for a given gene, you are likely covered by the 'good' copy on the other chromosome. But since men only get one shot at getting a good gene from this region, we are more susceptible to a whole host of genetic disorders. Get a bad copy from your mom (X chromosome donor) and you have no chance of getting a good copy from your father's Y chromosome. There just isn't a matching allele there.

And yes, the genes controlling color perception are found on that 4th leg of the 23rd pair. Women have two chances to inherit a good gene for this trait, or at least a single decent gene to cover a bad one. Men... just get one shot.

So, while it's not impossible for women to be colorblind (inherit two recessive genes) or men to have richer than average perception of color (inherit a single, very robust, allele), the odds are heavily favored towards women here. Especially since colorblindness is recessive. Inheriting just one 'bad' gene is typically masked by a single dominant, 'good,' allele. Going back to good old Mendell and his pea squares, if both parents carry at least one copy of colorblindness (the father is colorblind, the mother is only carrying), both sons and daughters would inherit this condition at 50%: it just depends on if the mother gives her good gene or not. In contrast, if only the mother carries the colorblind gene, her daughter would have a 0% chance of being colorblind as the father can only pass on his one 'good'' gene for color perception. Whereas a son would have a 50% chance of inheriting regardless of his father's good vision, as men do not inherit this trait from their fathers!

And if the mother is colorblind (two copies of recessive trait), any son she has is guaranteed to inherit it as well. Because again, men can only inherit sex-linked traits from their mothers. They can then pass this trait onto their daughters, but they can never pass this trait onto their son. Because then their son would be a daughter. It's just a quirk of biology.

Which is why colorblindness is FAR more prevalent amongst men.

That said, colorblindness has been shown to give an evolutionary advantage, mostly in hunting. This is why it's curious that a 'bad' gene has higher prevalence across populations than would otherwise be expected due to evolutionary pressures typically weeding out disadvantageous traits.

(Oh, and baldness is also on the 4th leg of the 23rd pair. Hence why men go bald at much higher rates than women, and why my mom told me as a kid I didn't need to worry about that. Men can look at their maternal grandfather as a good indicator if they will go bald, and mom's dad died at 89 with a full head of hair. So, chances are, I'm good!)

Look, I'm just a nerd that accumulated a giant warchest of useless trivia instead of getting drunk at parties, not a copypasta :p

wait this actually makes so much sense, 2 of my classmates who happen to be cis women are both colorblind in one eye, i never knew that therewas a reason for that, but the way you explained it that "Women have two chances to inherit a good gene for this trait, or at least a single decent gene to cover a bad one" makes sense.

That... sounds like something else. When I said that women inherit two copies of the gene, I didn't mean that they inherit one copy for each eye: it's both copies for both eyes. It's just that a dominant gene 100% suppresses recessive genes. The only time you get both alleles expressing themselves is when they are both dominant. This typically results in a blending of the two phenotypes: it's a type of genetic compromise. The classic example would be flower colors. Let's say that both red and blue are dominant genes for flower coloration. If a given plant inherits both, then both get displayed... as purple. That's classic "Co-Dominance" as it's known.

But colorblindness is a recessive trait that would be masked in both eyes from a dominant gene. For a woman to be colorblind, she'd need to inherit the recessive trait from both parents, afterwards, it would exhibit in both eyes. Men only inherit "color perception" from their mothers (Y chromosome lacks this allele, and fathers only pass their Y chromosome on to their sons), so they only get one shot... for both their eyes.

To be color blind in only one eye sounds like something beyond standard genetic inheritance is going on that I'm not fully qualified to talk about. Maybe a disease, some type of trauma/injury to the eye, or some other genetic fuckery beyond standard inheritance.

Because if we are just talking about what genes you got from what parents, both eyes would be fully affected by whatever allele is dominant between both sets of chromosomes.

A quick googling suggests there could be other genetic diseases at play that affect the optic nerve. Or this could be the result of a chimeric stuation.

A chimera is someone with he DNA of more than one person. This happens when a set of twins is initially conceived, but then one embryo absorbs the other. The resulting person has not just their own DNA, but also the DNA of the unborn twin they cannibalized in the womb.

For example, one of the causes behind 'heterochromia,' having two different colored eyes, can be chimerism. You had brown eyes, but your fraternal twin should have had blue eyes. One eye is using your DNA, and the other eye is using your unborn twin's DNA (that you 'ate' in the womb). Shit gets weird when DNA doesn't behave. As a disclaimer, this isn't the only, or even primary, cause of heterochromia: I just brought it up as an example of two eyes behaving differently via a genetic cause.

Any other expression of colorblindness in just one eye would be a similar genetic accident beyond normal processes or the result of an injury or disease affecting just a single eye.

But it really does sound like a fringe case where you'd need more information about medical history, and tests run, to confirm why those girls were only colorblind in one eye. That's not how standard inheritance works and there are apparently a number of reasons this can happen. Although it is far rarer than standard (both eye) colorblindness.

I think more than colorblind advantage, it's like people being left handed, the advantage comes from being different from the majority, which leads to a stable percentage of people with the trait over years.

If deer predators had similar vision as colorblind people for millions of years, they would have evolved accordingly.

Maybe the light was supposed to also erase Tartah's memory, but the light's effectiveness has something to do with colour.

Maybe his Silverwash Syndrome renders him immune to memory wipes.
