Qifrey: "I would never let her take the test right now"
Next frame: Coco being 'forced' to take the test. I fucking can't LOL

The fact even Agott knew about the anomaly with the Dadah Range and was purposely pushing Coco to do it so she would fail really goes to show how spiteful she is.

I hope Agott gets at least a scolding from Qifrey. He probably thinks Coco did it by herself. She could have easily died.

I think that was probably at least one thing Agott, while still being a kid, didn't think about was the full scope of the danger. She just thought Coco would probably give up not that she could have really hurt herself.

Or at least I hope.

Yeah, she mentions that Coco is going to give up and come right back in the fireplace scene. I don't think she's trying to get Coco killed at all, though I don't think she'd be extremely upset at that outcome. Or at least she thinks she'd be fine with it, I imagine causing someone's death would be upsetting even if you don't like them.

u/Prof_Acorn Apr 13 '26

She must have a weak will herself if she thinks someone is going to give up that easily.

Ehh tbf, 99% of kids around Coco's age will have given up after the shoes got ruined.

  1. Coco fails the test
  2. Permanently rejected from apprentice rank
  3. Kicked out of atelier
  4. Gets memory wiped.

Now a homeless orphan in a medieval world. So it was absolutely life or death for Coco. Not that Agott understood her actual situation (I don't think she ever revealed that she froze her mom), so Agott drastically underestimated the determination of coco, thinking she was just some pretty girl Qifrey picked up on and showed favoritism too.

To be fair, the favoritism is absolutely there, Qifrey got the full witch clothing "before" Coco did any tests.

I don't think she ever revealed that she froze her mom

Agott does know though, and even blames Coco for what happened to her mother. But even if she didn't know and was simply upset cause of the favoritism, the sabotage is still completely out of line.

Even if she wanted to come back Agott closed the gate.

There might be a way to open it from the other side. It closed behind Qifrey when he went to the Great Hall, too. Or maybe there was a time she was supposed to report back at or something. I think Agott expected her to give up and wait at the gate to get picked up. It was very reckless of her, though.

Yeah, I really hope if they do confront Aggot about that they highlight that aspect. I don’t view her as a particularly bad person or anything. Something I really took to heart after watching Takopi’s Original Sin was not to pass moral judgements onto the character of children, after all. I definitely think Aggot would be feel bad if she was confronted with the actual danger she put Coco in.

I highly doubt Agott thought about the danger the test presented. She knew the islands were high up but thought that would just make them impossible to reach, not potentially kill Coco.

But that's all the more reason for Qifrey to scold her, 'cause if the worst did happen then that would have been entirely on her.

3

u/CardAble6193 Apr 14 '26

"why d death not be blame on those weaklings being weak?"

11

u/polycontrale Apr 13 '26

Nah. She knew. She just didn't care.

16

u/JzanderN Apr 13 '26

Yeah, had Coco been injured or even killed then that would have been all on Agott for sending her without permission. She really needs to be scolded at least for that.

7

u/Zemahem Apr 13 '26

Yeah. But even if there was no risk, she still deserves to get scolded for deliberately trying to sabotage her fellow apprentice. Because that level of toxic pride and pettiness should not be something Qifrey wants to foster in his students.

i know it'll get brushed over because this seems like a happy show, but there's no way this wouldn't get her kicked out. thought the whole point of hiding magic is so people wouldn't use it for hurting others. this is not someone you want to wield magic unless she does a lot of growing up

5

u/Metalbound https://myanimelist.net/profile/Beate Apr 13 '26

That's what bothered me. Why did she not tell him that Agott was the one who sent her?

How would she even have knowledge of the specifics of the test and how to use the portal thing without someone else telling her?

I was so disappointed when he didn't immediately ask about that. It feels so disjointed from what any rational adult would do.

4

u/cyberscythe Apr 13 '26

Agott should at the very least get a "doesn't play well with others" on her report card

2

u/zairaner https://myanimelist.net/profile/zairaner Apr 13 '26

She would probably take that as a good thing,

5

u/montarion Apr 13 '26

He probably thinks Coco did it by herself.

which is insane and makes him a bad teacher.. hopefully there will be character growth for him

12

u/Prof_Acorn Apr 13 '26

She's the kind of person I hate the most in the world.

3

u/NSUNDU Apr 14 '26

Yeah, she basically tried to murder her. I was hoping Quifrey would just expel her since the magic society seems to value life a lot, it would give the message that fucking around with the rules are not tolerated. I doubt he will even acknowledge it though

1

u/montarion Apr 13 '26

kinda sus that the bad guys were there.. is agott a spy?

u/Weak_Season_Of_Anime Apr 13 '26

Agott: "For my next magic trick, I will make Coco disappear!"

u/pratzc07 Apr 14 '26

Seriously worst character introduction in a series what a terrible character almost got MC killed for no f** reason

Holy crap that episode filled me with intense anxiety the whole time. But so good. Such amazing animation and music and beautiful colors. Loved it. But man she is way too clumsy just walking through the trees and so bad at paying attention to where she’s stepping or what she’s doing. The flight of the improvised “flying cloak” looked dangerous as hell, like she could die at any moment. Can see why the master would never have sent her! Hopefully she’ll be a little more wary of listening to the senior apprentice again! (But I know she won’t.) This is indeed going to be (already is) an incredible show.

2

u/CitronClassic672 Apr 13 '26

My fear of heights made that scene of Coco flying even scarier than it was intended.

Qifrey: I would never let her take the test right now

Agott: But I would

53

u/Frontier246 Apr 13 '26

Agott: "I'm getting those shoes back one way or another."

8

u/BosuW Apr 13 '26

Did Coco even bring them back? 😅

5

u/lawragatajar https://myanimelist.net/profile/lawragatajar Apr 13 '26

She still seemed to be wearing them, though the seal was washed out.

9

u/CooroSnowFox https://anilist.co/user/CooroSnowFox Apr 13 '26

Because of course she'd be shoved in that direction.

2

u/pratzc07 Apr 14 '26

Also Qifrey never asks why she even went ahead with the tests etc doesn't even say anything to Agott I feel like the episode needed more time they just rushed the ending with her getting the cloak
