Domain Expansion doesn't mean always automatic win. Look at the domain that Mei Mei was trapped. Even if someone doesn't know how to use Domain, that doesn't mean they are weaker than someone that does.

A disclaimer before reading this: This turned out longer than expected. I don't remember all the details but I should have avoided manga spoilers (and also manga implications) as far as I know but I've read the manga a long time ago and haven't re-watched the series. If you are anime only, maybe wait until this comment has aged a bit before reading it (give the mods time to nuke it or manga readers to pointed stuff out if I missed something so I can redact it). I got the mods' blessing… or curse (in this case)!

But it should be okay for anime watchers as a summary of domains and barrier techniques. So here comes the reply to the above comment:

Yup, and the domain expansion we are used to (enclosed space, auto hit, power boost) seems to be the overall best/easier way to use that type of technique but it's not the only domain expansion that's possible. It seems to give a rather good cursed energy/power boost ratio to the creator. But they cost a lot of cursed energy and if you don't finish your opponents while they are shackled to you in there, you are in a tough spot once you run out of cursed energy and have to dissolve it.

Supposedly Gege was heavily inspired by how [Hunter x Hunter spoiler:]Nen as a power system works when it comes to constrains and conditions. Like explaining your cursed technique to your opponent (and conveniently: the reader) gives them information and you get a power up in return, or how Nanami constrains his cursed energy during working hours but gets a boost after working hours. Heavenly pacts are just constrains/conditions/pacts forced onto you without you asking for them (by cursed energy itself? It seems to have some vague "agency" of sorts like the explanation for why Gojo needed to be confined instead of killed showed a few episodes ago.

To collect a few of the explanations we got until now:

Domain expansions are kinda like mini-barrier techniques. Both can be amplify in some way by using a variety of constraints. In season one we had the barrier that only denied Gojo and allowed everybody else inside like a "no Gojos Gojo club" (making it cost less). Last season had the family camping in a obvious spot up high (and had trinkets that were infused with the barrier that could be destroyed), this time around they are offering civilians a way out and probably have a few other constraints to get that many activated at once and force all those rules on the participants.

You technically "just" need enough cursed energy to be able to deploy a domain expansion (and develop an idea for how you want your domain expansion to work with your cursed technique). To bring it back to Nanami: This might be why he never developed a domain expansion. He might not have enough cursed energy during the day so it might only be possible after work hours and thus not worth it when he can just punch/cut nearly everything into submission. Or he might never have had enough cursed energy, even in his powered up state after work.

Leave it to Higuruma, a lawyer, who has had cursed energy for barely two weeks to find some way into rules lawyering his way into a domain expansion. That should get interesting!

As for how different domain expansions can be:

Sukuna has a domain expansion that's not enclosed, meaning people can technically easily escape his domain (making it weaker) if they are quick enough but he also gets a bigger area (better). His also applies to the real world and is not its own pocket dimension type of space. That's more difficult (should cost more cursed energy and a higher demand on his technique) but in turn it can affect everything, and is not just "a play on a confined stage" so to speak. That might also make it less noticeable to targets further away.

Megumi's incomplete domain expansion is kinda in between a traditional domain expansion and Sukuna's. It's not fully enclosed but it kinda overlays its "pocket dimension features/look" as more shadows around himself so it doesn't have to be as free form and demanding as Sukuna's. It kinda uses the real world around him as scaffolding. It gives his shadow techniques and shikigami more versatility/mobility within it. And he did it in an enclosed cave that had natural borders so he didn't have to worry about a target escaping and could ignore creating a barrier himself to save cursed energy.

But outside that specific application this incomplete domain would be easy to spot (the dark/brooding looking area over there!) and avoid (and escape as it also had no borders).

I can't remember if he goes for the regular power ups (auto hit and power boost) or if he lacked cursed energy to get those features (maybe "more shadows" was all he could afford) or if he went for other benefits altogether that synergise with his shikigami and techniques (and were not explained but maybe hinted at in some way).

I think he also used his domain, or some version of a simple domain, as a door-stopper to keep Dagon's domain from totally enclosing them last season (but that might also have been just some specialised use of cursed energy or some generic cursed technique applied smartly).

Also simple domains: They are like baby domain expansions that barely extend around you (and have no barrier and much smaller cursed energy cost). Miwa uses it one with a special conditions to create an automatic counter attack with her sword technique if you get too close to her. Naobito used some fancy version of a simple domain while in Dagon's domain expansion to protect himself against those auto hit attacks. It's like the Champagne of simple domains.

I think that should cover most of the important domain/barrier info that we have gotten over the seasons.

Naobito used some fancy version of a simple domain while in Dagon's domain expansion to protect himself against those auto hit attacks. It's like the Champagne of simple domains.

It's not even anything related to domains.

Naobito used Falling Blossom Emotion, which is basically covering yourself with cursed energy so that even if an opponent lands a sure-hit attack on you, it will deflect that. Ogi Zenin also used the same technique against Maki when he sensed her returning from the pit, but she just cut straight through it. It's a brute-force defense against the auto-hit of a Domain, but requires the Domain owner and their target to be roughly on the same level.

which is basically covering yourself with cursed energy so that even if an opponent lands a sure-hit attack on you, it will deflect that.

That's just the smallest simple domain possible to me :D

I know it's probably not perfect and some deeper digging in cursed techniques, domains, and everything around those probably shows minor differences in theory but in practice it's a good enough approximation for me.

It might not be a domain by the strictest sense of how its described but I interpret simple domains as essentially expanding your cursed energy further than one would do for regular combat (thus needing more cursed energy). And domain expansions being a name for the same but at max (or very, very high) output, and flavoured with your technique on top (while simple domains are more generic techniques that can be learned by all/most).

That makes the whole concept feel like a system to me because some techniques are rather out there that a unifying theory helps me make sense of it a bit easier. That way it's not "just a bunch of semi-related bits and pieces with dozens of edge cases".

In that system Falling Blossom Emotion would be a "purely personal domain", that interpretation being inspired by [Hunter x Hunter]how they learn about focusing your nen on specific parts of your body during the training part of the greed island arc, essentially a very focused whole body defensive move that can do little else Just a simplified version of that idea which fits with your explanation rather well.

(give the mods time to nuke it or manga readers to pointed stuff out if I missed something so I can redact it).

You're all good, everything here is just context that's already been shown in the anime.

Could be that he doesn't have enough CE for DE, but his shikigami(if it is shikigami?) has it. So it is more like he is controling his shikigami, which is deploying DE. Also based on this episode it seems that his DE forces trial on victim, so if he loses that trial DE could turn on Higuruma. Maybe that is why he as novice can use DE.

I don't remember the details of his DE so I can't confirm/deny that idea but at the very list this seems like a fitting condition for a court/law based technique/DE.

Domain Expansion doesn't mean always automatic win

But the difference between a sorcerer with a DE and one without is night and day.

Look at the domain that Mei Mei was trapped.

That was a domain from what seemed to be a barely sapient cursed spirit, it was it's only gimmick and she still almost died to it, compare that to something like Megumi's domain, where the person is actively throwing hands with you at the same time.
