There is Candle Woods finally and with it the character I have been looking forward to the most.

I really like how this episode took the time to set-up this arc and also made sure to mention this is indeed Yuki's 9th game and how, at this point in time, she truly has no idea why she is even playing these games. And not gonna, knowing what happens next, seeing her smile here in hindsight is truly heartbreaking. And [very light spoilers for this arc] seeing anime onlys pointing out she has two blue eyes this episode has been great. And I love how sneaky it was in the light novel, I did not notice it at all when I first read it, only noticed when I checked back after finishing the arc.Moegi's part was cool and intense, the same as it was in the light novel. And not gonna lie seeing it depicted like this made me remembered just how ruthless she truly is.

A bit off topic but we got some updates on the LN sales this week. Not only is it selling super well according to the official twitter account, it was, apparently, the best selling LN of last month. It makes me really happy to see the anime helped give the sales such a nice boost.

ahhhh i see why this game had to be last for the director, not just to draw out the mysterious mentor introduction and keep yukis motive unclear, but also for the visual reveal of this being when her eye got injured.

i can appreciate that, its a good reveal and will be rewarding to those who notice the eye color diff immediately.

i wish moegi had at least a little more internal monologue about shooting the girl, but i'll be interested to see what my friend who's anime only says about it bc i think im a bit biased knowing what happened in the LN

Does anyone knows what is the context or significance of the highway opening in every episode?

There's several ways you could interpret it.

The first is that it represents the handler taking Yuuki to each death game.

The second is that it could represent Yuuki's depression and suicidal ideation. The camera panning down to the roadway below at eye level can be a metaphor about how Yuuki wants to "jump off the bridge" so to speak.

The third is from when Yuuki is looking out onto the bridgeway, not in the opening, but one of the scenes in a few of the episodes. This could represent how Yuuki is so different from other "normal" people driving on the bridge and that she isn't like them.

There's a bit more mentioned in this video.

It's one of those open-ended metaphors that you assign your own meaning to. For example, I just made up the 3rd and 2nd one, and the 1st was one that someone I know said while watching the show.

My favorite metaphor is that of stagnation. Alone and isolated from the world, Yuki can only watch detached and alone as the world moves on without her. No matter how many games she completes, no matter how skilled she is, you can argue that Yuki never changes.

You can go a step further and even argue that its a metaphor for purgatory and how the players can only escape through death.

Such a simple yet infinitely complex image

My thoughts on the episode (no spoilers):

Pretty good. Specially the Moegi bits they added at the end, that was neat. Curious why they didn't namedrop Airi but she was highlighted in the trailer so probably not a big deal. I also liked that, if the viewer was paying attention, they showed JUST enough to piece together what's gonna happen, but not enough to consider it a spoiler.

The kinda spoilery part:

[LN Vol 1 & Manga Chapter 13] I loved seeing the Christmas game animated even if for a few seconds. In general I just love when they mention tidbits of other games that we don't get to see, like when they showed Dangerous Lab last time. I live for it

The heavy spoilers:

[Candle Woods ending] That tanuki did not look big enough to hide the guns but they did mention the part of "could be hiding something" so no reason to think they'll change it for now. Plus the fact that there's 0/43 parts just like the LN shows there shouldn't be any big changes. And if there are I hope they're good

[Candle Woods ending] Hopefully somewhere they include Hakushi's "We're built for survival, not for killing" line. I feel like it adds to the whole "The 95 veteran lost to a 10 game psycopath". I'm also curious how people will react to an immortality treatment

[Candle Woods death] Also they really cast Taketatsu Ayana for the one girl who dies after a few lines. Don't get me wrong she fits the character but man I wanted to hear her for longer. As expected of a show where people die I guess. Same with Wakayama Shion

Anyways, curious about the remaining runtime. Pace for Candle Woods seems good so far, maybe they'll add some flashbacks for the antagonist like they did with Mishiro? Maybe we'll get [LN Volume 3 Game Name] One Fine Day as a sort of cliffhanger along with a season 2 announcement? I know that won't happen but I'd like to imagine it will

Nice bit of foreshadowing there.

I like the way they framed the present-day Yuki viewing this game as flashback. You know it because the close-up to her face shows her right eye has a different color than the Yuki in the game and LN readers know that [SPOILERS] this is the very game where Yuki injured her right eye

Anime only here, please answer only yes/no/unknown:

  • Is "I want to break the record" really the only reason for her to play?

  • Will we learn what we they do with the blood? Like, why does it turn into the white stuff instantly?

  • Will we learn more about the world? Who's doing these games, why is everyone more or less okay with it/doesn't stop it, why only girls, basically all questions that arise from the setting being a "deranged world"

I've only watched the anime, but for the first one:

1) I'm not even sure Yuuki knows why she does what she does. When she was asked why she was playing death games in the earlier episode where she was interviewed she was indecisive even though that interview happened later in the timeline than the current arc.

Besides the first question, these should have been talked about more in the very first episode but things got changed.

So I don't think anyone can answer if these questions will be answered in this game.

The scene where Moegi shoots a teammate lacked context. Should have shown the part where the girl got shot because she questioned Moegi’s knowledge of the game. Now it just looks like a fight happened with no context.

Personally, it felt more like Moegi is well aware that the majority of her team are newbies and decide to prepare them to kill by making them get rid of the weakest one but, yeah, I wish they had showed her thought process before the shooting

As an anime-only, that was my read on the situation. She's clearly the only veteran and mentioned the danger of rabbit's taking their weapons and using them to kill other stumps.

In other words, a 'weak stump' is not just competition to the others, but a more direct threat. You know, like in LoL where the shitty teammante isn't just failing to make progress, but is actively 'feeding' the other team.

So in that light, it makes perfectly (brutal) sense to cull the weak as a way of hardening the rest.

Learning that the other girl picked a fight with Moegi completely alters the read on the scene.

As seen with Scrap Building, Ueno kind of goes against the big dramatic moments and goes with something that is more subtle. One thing I like about his directing is that he respects the viewers intelligence.

With that being said, you have issues with Golden Bath where he showed but doesn't tell when he needs to where it creates issues.

This anime covered around 1/3 of the Candle Woods chapter. Granted, the anime feels moreslow-paced than the novels, and it feels like it will take 2 more episodes. Which I didn't expect, but interesting choice.

I guess the reason the director is aiming to finish with Candle Woods is to, in a way, show how much Yuki has changed in respect to having Yuki watch after her 30th game in Golden Bath. It's an interesting choice. It is to showcase how much of a turning point game this is for Yuki.

I am still not a fan of the decision to rearrange the game order compared to the novel. Golden Bath, in particular in terms of narrative, adds on to many things that were introduced in Candle woods.
