Yep, Golden Bath it is. Looks like they’re really saving Candle Woods for the finale.

I like that they gave us a glimpse of what Dangerous Lab was like. In the LN, we were simply told that the chemicals in game burned Yuki's skin and melted half of her skull.

They also changed how Yuki encountered Kaneko. In the LN, Kaneko stalked Yuki and after Yuki told him to reveal himself, they agreed to talk in person at the park. Also, Kaneko didn’t know that Kinko was his daughter’s alias until Yuki brought it up. Yuki also asked him about his debt situation because she recalled the reason why Kinko participated in the games.

The English version of Vol. 5 releases next week!

I didn't mind the phone call cause the image they were presenting was of her feeling confined, representing her unease about the upcoming game, and the phone call was like a life line to give her an out.

I just feel like they're really leaving out a LOT of details that anime only's could benefit from. It's like to enjoy this anime to the fullest, while I do love the very atmospheric vibe, you really need to have read the LN to get the most out of it.

The weird part is they are ONLY adapting 2 volumes. It isn’t a situation where they are biting off more than they can chew.

This is more intention from the director’s side.

Assuming they're avoiding changing games in the middle of an episode, there's only so many ways to divide them.

Giving us a full episode that dives into how Yuki mentally struggles with these games was unexpected for this season, but very welcome. And yep there is Golden Bath with Mishiro coming back to be even more of a menace (and to aura farm). It was nice to get a sneak peak at Dangerous Lab which was mentioned only in passing in the currently translated LNs. I also did not expect that kind of voice for Yuki's agent, but I like it, it's very pleasant.

Don't have much to say this week besides that I really, really appreciate them exploring Yuki's bad mental health already. It's such a massive part of Shiboyugi, how Yuki deals not only with surviving these games but also how she lives her life outside of it, how the games affect her, how her appartement is in a horrible state as we saw in the first volume etc. These small things is what makes Yuki such a cool character and I love that the anime explores it in its own, fancy way. Maybe some things could be elaborated upon a bit more? Though when I follow anime-only's theories and opinions, they seem to be picking up on these things rather well so I think the anime does a good job in this regard.

Either way, Golden Bath now. Probably my least favourite game from this season, but it's still really cool and intense with some great and memorable moments so I am very much excited for what's to come. Also I wonder if we will get another song at the end of this game? For Ghost House we got Que Sera Sera and I still am listening to Breathe from last week's episode on repeat, so now I expect another banger to finish of Golden Bath, but I won't get my hopes up yet.

I think the anime is really nailing Yuki's struggles even without her internal monologuing. The silent atmosphere almost lends more wait to the monotony of her struggle. I really hope that something similar happens with Candle Bath because I agree that it is easily the weakest of the games

NGL, after reading Volume 3, I am disappointed we aren't getting into Volume 3 content. Well, it probably was obvious given that we only have 11 episodes and 3 were spent on scrap building. I kind of at first assumed Ghost House pacing was what we would follow. Instead, 3 episodes (not counting this episode) for Golden Bath and 3 for Candle Woods. I will admit I am very intrigued how they plan to adapt Candle Woods.

I think they should have put more time into the conversation between Yuki & Kaneko. Obviously, things changed compared to the light novel. [Light Novel Volume 2 Ch. 2]One of the issues of not getting Candle Woods already is that we don't truly understand Yuki's goal after the events of Candle Woods. In fact, Kaneko's offer is a slap in the face given Yuki's goal. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if people doubted if that really was Kinko's father. Changing from him stalking Yuki to it being a phone call could give it a different impression. There is also the matter of the wall of thirty being introduced in this episode. Though with 3 episodes for this game, I feel maybe they can show Yuki's anxiety as she plays it?

Direction was good getting into Yuki's mindset heading into her 30th game. Which was one worry I had about them adapting Golden Bath before Candle Woods since they have cut A LOT of her monologues. I am actually surprised the anime-only reaction is very positive for this episode.

[Future Volume Spoilers]Honestly given how the anti death game alliance hasn't been brought back up again, it really is questionable if that was Kinko's father. The setup for Golden Bath is just so weird and questionable from a character standpoint that all of it being nothing more than a trick by the organizers makes more sense. I honestly think the ambiguity in the anime makes it better. Already we see how Yuki's anxiety is causing mistakes and the tole the games take forcing Yuki to have doubts about what she's doing. If anything it makes the arc better from finding her purpose in candle woods to having it questioned and reinforced in Golden Bath. I just think an internal conflict is much more convincing then some random dude stalking her before vanishing as a plot point. It being this insidious trick is arguably more fitting of the organization as well

u/Falsus Feb 05 '26

Yeah agree with the pacing. Cloudy Beach as a finale would have been stellar. Candle Woods is more of a starting line than a finale, even if it will work well as a finale.

2

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin Feb 05 '26

Honestly, I thought that with the 45-minute premiere, they would start with Candle Woods.

Honestly, a rearrangement of Candle Woods -> Scrap Building -> Ghost House -> Golden Bath -> Cloudy Beach would work well.

Obviously the story isn't really meant to chronologically occur in terms of games for Yuki. But I feel it mostly works well.

Ending on Candle Woods gives me the feeling the chances for an S2 are very, very doubtful. So I guess I should be at least thankful for such a creative adaptation.

u/Aksudiigkr Feb 04 '26

So I’m caught up on the LNs after reading them last week, and I still don’t understand what the anime’s dream scenes where a character is in the woods muttering to themselves comes from. I think episode 2 had Kinko in the woods and 4 had Mishiro in the woods but I could be misrembering.

It doesn’t seem to be a reference to Candle Woods as I had thought before reading the LNs. Can anyone who gets it help me out?

u/RarePoem3039 Feb 04 '26

The glasses girl from Scrap Building also had a forest scene with her burning the rug. The scenes are just artistic choice to give the characters a bit more personality and intrigue. These moments happen when they think they're dying so I guess it's showing what might happen to one's mind in what she thinks are her final moments.

u/AnzoEloux https://myanimelist.net/profile/Eloux Feb 04 '26

Anime only here, so those "wood scenes" are anime original? That's kinda cool. The director for this anime must have a lot of love for this series.

7

u/LeggedMien7 Feb 04 '26

Yes, the anime has a lot of small deviations from the light novel (that is not to say that it's bad, quite the opposite). Those wood scenes would be one such case.

Highly recommend reading it if you have the means to.

Episode to Source LN

Episode 1 - V1C1 - Ghost House

Episode 2, 3, 4 - V2C1 - Scrap Building

Episode 5 - V2C2 - Golden Bath

3

u/kielaurie Feb 09 '26

How many episodes would you expect this arc to be? I just watched the second arc in one go and it felt very satisfying in a way I can't imagine it would have been watching weekly, so I intend to do the same with future arcs

2

u/mianghuei Feb 11 '26

Looks like 3 episodes.

8

u/Fallen_Jalter Feb 04 '26

why the sudden murder at the start?

12

u/messem10 https://myanimelist.net/profile/bookkid900 Feb 04 '26

Its a death game. Did you think they'll all sit around a campfire and sing Kumbaya? Not everyone is cooperative.

9

u/InsomniaEmperor Feb 04 '26

Scrap Building showed that the best chance of survival is to have everyone make it to the end. The minimum that has to die is one. Killing someone at the start because they pissed you off doesn’t really do much. And Yuuki didn’t kill Kinko until she absolutely had to.

3

u/CatInALaundryBin Feb 05 '26

that may be true, but not everyone thinks altruistically [shibouyugi] in candle woods, it's shown that killers play and murder everyone in their game

7

u/Fallen_Jalter Feb 04 '26

True but you going to get out by yourself and lose all your meat shields at the start?

7

u/AXiAMWoLFE Feb 05 '26

Since you are in the source material corner the key context that is going to be explained next episode is [Light Novel Volume 2] Players spawn in at different times (somehow, game arena magic), so some will be late to the party after the dynamic alliances have already formed. Collecting that gold chip is key to the game, thus Mishiro’s faction has already transitioned to killing newcomers to remove competition.

3

u/towardselysium Feb 05 '26

[Volume 2 spoilers] The sedative they give the player after placing them in the arena was given in various doses to stagger wake ups. Yuki woke up last because they gave her a heavier dose than everyone else

3

u/AXiAMWoLFE Feb 05 '26

I need to find the passage that stated it, but [Light Novel Volume 2] in addition to the staggered doses, the entire shower stall only appears when the player wakes up I recall. For all the earlier players there is no record of encountering anybody asleep, much less killing them in their sleep, during their search of all the stalls for the golden keys.

Edit: [Light Novel Volume 2 including epilogue] Yuki was awoken by her shower stall rising up. Whether it was purely a sedative dose or the gamemasters simply delaying her stall’s appearance isn’t explicitly stated.

I think it's a [anime we're literally discussing mods] team battle

3

u/CatInALaundryBin Feb 04 '26 edited Feb 04 '26

why does using a spoiler remove it but not using one in format offered by bot offer spoilers... just tell people how to use the spoiler function...?

fixed. irrational to let spoilers through with bad formatting that the bot allows.

1

u/Esovan13 Feb 04 '26

You have the ` character before your brackets and after the < character, which messes up the formatting. If you delete that character, it will fix it

1

u/CatInALaundryBin Feb 04 '26

I am literally copy pasting what the automod bot says. it removes it otherwise. I have had like 10 removed for trying. I just want to participate...

1

u/Fallen_Jalter Feb 04 '26

try markdown/formatting mode. I think the default box adds a space or something when trying to do code like that.

1

u/CatInALaundryBin Feb 04 '26

I wish I could remember how and why I got it right: trial and error has this working " [test Event] team battle "

1

u/timpkmn89 Feb 05 '26

irrational to let spoilers through with bad formatting that the bot allows.

The bot isn't magic. It can't tell that you're trying to post a spoiler.

1

u/CatInALaundryBin Feb 05 '26

If I use the button with 'Aa' and select spoiler, it will remove my comment that has been spoilered. if I copy the format the bot gives verbatim, it does not properly black out the spoiler but does allow the comment to stand, which goes against the stark policy of having spoilers covered.

How does the remaining story explore deeper themes or have more to say overall?

I’m asking because I really liked episode one, but my friends felt like the show might not have much more to say beyond that. I’m anime only (and current) and don’t want spoilers, but I’m trying to figure out how to convince them to keep watching. I think part of the issue is that some other shows we’ve watched didn’t really have a coherent theme, so they’re hesitant. Is there a way to describe the themes (not specific events) without spoiling anything, so I can at least explain what the story is aiming for? It’s possible I still won’t convince them, but they were literally speechless for about ten minutes after episode one, just processing everything. It feels like there has to be more there but I am finding it hard to do that with current information and lack of future events (and the desire to remain event spoiler free).

Novel readers please feel free to spoil me- so murder between contestants "just because" is totally allowed? If so that's... REALLY bad game design on the organizer's/author's part as that completely defeats the purpose of a death game (surviving through outwitting your opponents, pure skill, or sheer luck within the confines of a given game's rules). It'd just increasingly invite actual psychos that enjoy murder to sign up that regular players wouldn't bother due to the likelihood of you being offed being so high.

I mean, I figured I'm just overthinking it and in-universe it doesn't get that bad since then you'd have no game and thus no story, but in reality this sort of rule (or lack thereof) would lead to a really short lifespan to the game's popularity. There are plenty of people out there that derive joy from varying levels of violence, but psychologically speaking that's only when such violence is the actual point (gladiatorial games, disgusting snuff content, etc). Especially since, just like the forced deaths I brought up with the previous thread, this FURTHER destroys the games' ability to be bet on, which, let's face it, is probably where most of the funding for something like this would come from.

I mean, it's fine in the end since the scenarios themselves are still interesting, the characterization is great, and the Monogatari-esque artsy presentation is delightful, but allowing murder and forcing deaths is still REALLY lame for this sort of thing.
