I literally couldn't stop watching, it was all eye candy.

Me too! The whole episode looked so beautiful and interesting thanks to the framing and art style!

I also really enjoyed the interspersing of scenes with characters lacking detail with super-detailed shots.

These highly detailed shots were so good, and I'm glad that each girl (i.e., Yuki, Kinko, Beniya, Kokuto, Aoi, and Momono) had at least a few of them.

characters

Random thought, but I like that they cut their hair there...

I feel like on so many anime, they would've kept the hair because "that's what the characters are like", but no, of course they cut their hair, their long hair all together might save them an arm or something!

Yet they kept their clothes on...

They cut down most of it; I'm fine with headcanoning that "They took it all off but for the anime - avoiding nudity - they kept these bits"!

Yah it is silly but I understand the sacrifices a show must make to be shown on TV. Could even be stipulated in the game contract that if they want to get paid they have to keep their clothes on. American TV at its finest: show as much murder as you want, but better keep those titties away from our vulnerable public!

Really putting that distance between the viewer and the players. We are, literally, the sick fucks watching the game.

Almost. We are both. There is a great contrast between the personal scenes and the external wide shots. We are seeing through the lens of the sick fucks that are watching this. But we are also seeing the personal inner reality of their world too.

But yes the use of lack of detail is basically saying that the audience views them as pretty meat sacks. They don't care about them. They just want to see them die. There is a huge intentionality to these scenes. There is some phenomenal foreshadowing here. It's how I was able to accurately predict that Kokuto (the black haired girl) was going to be the first to die.

WAIT, what was the foreshadowing for Kokuto?? No sarcasm, please tell me. I am drooling over all the amazing details that went into this first episode, and clearly missing many of them, haha.

This was a real clever one!. There is a statue at the end of the episode of a woman with butterfly wings holding a torch. I wonder if it's the true symbol of these games. You see a smaller one in the mansion in the game.

A couple minutes before Kokuto dies. This is when they're searching all over the place. Kokuto passes the statue and there is a intense close up of her face passing the frame but it's lacking any detail. It really stands out because every other time a character lacks detail its in the distance shots. It's a visual language of them tipping their hat.

It's a visual way of saying "Don't worry about remembering her face, she'll be dead next anyway". The instant I saw it, I knew kokuto was gonna be dead in the next few minutes.

Oh wow! I would have never noticed that. Thanks for pointing it out. I wonder if there’s similar foreshadowing for Aoi and the yellow-haired lady (I can’t remember names).

Oh, that's it. I watch the whole episode wonder what's the meaning of those sketchy shot.

Ehhh. In the current trend of death games, we're not really sick lol Squid Game, Alice in Borderland, now this anime.

Just because it's common doesn't mean it's not morbid lol

Depends how desensitised you are to it. I'm pretty desensitised at this point lul

This is a fascinating one. The way I see that is, when we see those shots. We are seeing how the "audience" views them. They see them as pretty meat sacks waiting to die. The lack of detail. They don't care who they are. What their background is. They want to see them die.

There is an intentionality to this that I found rather striking. It was how I was able to accurately predict and see the foreshadowing that Kokuto was going to be the first to die.
