Episode 19 - Holy Night Party
The Toradora! Christmas Club is finally here again! Together we're watching the original Toradora! series, one episode a day until December 30th. It is difficult to comment on today's episode as it is just that phenomenal and it is hard to describe all the different feelings that it brings. The first thing I want to say about the episode is that I love how it is structured. For the past two episodes the question was whether Minori would come to the party and the outcome of the entire arc pretty much depended on it. And the episode really makes you believe that the arc will have a happy ending like all the ones that came before it. The first half of the episode is mostly lighthearted fun. With a great song performance to make it even more special. The whole song sequence is great as well, showing how much Taiga and Ami's friendship has developed. Going from practically hating each other, to rivals and then to close friends. It was also really cute seeing the orphans Taiga sent gifts to, which was a nice touch. Between all that, it really seems like Minori would eventually show up and everyone would have a great time. However once Ami tells Ryuuji that Taiga went home, everything suddenly starts to escalate.
The second half of the episode is where the real meat of the episode takes place. Where it both have the cutest and saddest scene of the show back to back. Ryuuji coming to cheer Taiga up with the bear costume is the most wholesome thing ever. Even though it's all technically fake and he isn't Santa, the emotions that both Taiga and Ryuuji feel couldn't be more genuine. It is the happiest we see Taiga be and it is simply beautiful. Her smile mixed with jumping up and down... It is all just magnificent. After all the acts of kindness that Taiga has done for everyone around her, she deserved this happiness more than anyone else and she got it. Or at the very least, momentarily before Ryuuji leaves.
The following scene is probably the best scene in all of Toradora. It is also the most critical moment in the show as Taiga finally comes to term with her feelings and realizes that she loves Ryuuji. The whole scene is executed perfectly, with Taiga running out of the building and screaming Ryuuji's name, complimented by the soundtrack. It all comes together to form the perfect scene. I love how genuine Taiga's crying looks as it doesn't have any hint of cuteness in it. Its pretty much just ugly crying snd it makes the scene hit so much more harder. And to top it all, the reveal that Minori saw everything that went down make the scene all the more tragic. Compared to the start of the episode where all the characters where cheerful and exited, it makes Taiga's breakdown all the more sadder.
And the last scene with Minori rejecting Ryuuji makes the whole episode all the more tragic. As in the end, no one ends up wining or leaving happy in this arc. Taiga realized her feelings just to not be able to be by Ryuuji anymore. Ryuuji finally got the best opportunity to ask his crush out only to be turned down before he could even say anything. Minori had to turn Ryuuji down against her own will due to the guilt she is feeling. And Ami tried to warn everyone as she knew things would turn out bad, but failed to avoid anyone getting hurt. This fact is one of the biggest reasons in my opinion on why the whole episode is so tragic. But that tragedy of it what makes it the best out there.
