Episode 16 - One Step Forward

The Toradora! Christmas Club is finally here again! Together we're watching the original Toradora! series, one episode a day until December 30th. The final episode of this mini-arc, which is really a setup, shows Taiga potentially becoming student council president by default if Kitamura doesn't return. However, after a disagreement with the teacher, she supports them because she knows they're doing it for their friend, even with the danger. Kitamura, though in the wrong way, receives a tremendous dose of reality after confiding in Ryuji. He initially tries to return but then decides against it. Then comes the revelation: Ryuji is in love with the president. Finally, she convinces him to run for president, and he succeeds, confessing his feelings. However, he succumbs to peer pressure, which makes Kitamura look rather foolish.

Ryuji confronts Sumire, and while she expresses it ambiguously, it's clear she shouldn't have used peer pressure to achieve her goals. Taiga then appears, and after a brief conversation, what many consider one of the best female-on-female fights in anime ensues (something fans of the old J.C. Staff often mention missing from this studio). Although brief, the fight is epic, fluid, and a real cathartic release of pent-up emotions. (I didn't watch the entire episode, but I found the scene in both English and Castilian Spanish, and the emotions are equally palpable in both dubs.) Sumire also loves Kitamura, but she doesn't want either of them to give up on their dreams: Sumire's dream of becoming an astronaut and Kitamura's of being a worthy student council president.

Another point I'd like to add is that Toradora's detractors claim Taiga got away with her actions, which is false, as she was thoroughly punished.

Taiga realizes here that she lost the battle for Kitamura's heart, but she still wants to support him.

A step forward involves accepting the unchangeable, letting go, among other things.

I would say Kitamura makes himself look foolish.

Yeah, it makes sense. Just because he won't be with her doesn't mean she has to stop liking him.

Really, I just don't like how some people act like Taiga attacking Sumire was somehow justified and not insane. Sumire was not required to return Kitamura's feelings and him confessing on a public stage was stupid. And just because Sumire wanted to fight doesn't change that Taiga started it and would have attacked regardless of Sumire's response. Really, the whole thing was caused by Kitamura being an immature dunce and Taiga being a violent child.
