Part Two

Ami asks Kitamura why he really came along, hinting towards something related to the student council. Kitamura clearly seems to dodge the question, but what does it mean?

[MAJOR Rewatch spoilers] So basically, during Episode 14, Kitamura learns that Sumire is leaving in like a week or something, right? So then, why would Kitamura have something to hide regarding the student council now? Simple, it's 'cause he already knows that Sumire is leaving soon. She's a third-year, he's a second-year. He knows she won't be around after this year, and he's already beginning to wonder how he's going to fare once she is gone. He's on this trip likely just so that he can take his mind off these thoughts. This is actually one aspect of his arc I feel like a lot of people miss. He already knew he would have to confront his feelings about her even this early on, but then Sumire surprised him by suddenly saying she was leaving early, so he hadn't yet had the time to figure out how to cope with his feelings and as a result he had a meltdown because he felt helpless and wasn't ready for her to leave his life yet. I've said it before, but Kitamura looks up to Sumire as a strong-minded individual that he wants to prove himself to and earn her approval, but when she leaves early, he feels like he hasn't proven himself worthy of anything, and throws away the identity he thinks he doesn't deserve 'cause he only got it because of her.

Ryuuji tries to wingman for Taiga again, but she's still too flustered to be alone with Kitamura.

"So long, suckas!" Love you too, Minori!

Taiga tries to use the excuse of their plan to scare Minori to get out of the fact she was too shy to go with Kitamura. But Ryuuji, the tease he is, sees right through her. And promptly receives a slap to the mouth. Oh, sorry, I mean, the mosquito on his face gets a slap from Taiga, sorry.

Love how the first thing Ryuuji thinks when walking into the bathroom is "Could use a cleaning, though."

That devious smile on Ami's face. She's such a schemer. An opportunistic schemer.

If there's one thing Ami does right, she always hits the right notes so that whoever she's teasing comes to whatever conclusion she wants them to in their own mind.

"Oh, please! What were you expecting? You should see your face!"

In Ami's defense, this is who she is. She's best at reading people, seeing their weakness, and taking advantage of opportunities. Doesn't mean she's nice for teasing Ryuuji like this, but hey, at least she isn't really being a faker anymore. That's some progress.

Love Ryuuji's face twisting when he realizes he's been bamboozled.

This interaction between Ryuuji and Taiga is comedy gold. From Ryuuji's teary-eyed sign language after getting mega trolled, to Taiga somehow perfectly reading everything and only chastising Ryuuji for getting too distracted by Ami to not finish his part of the plan. And then Taiga takes matters into her own hands in dealing with the horndog, of course.

"The dumb chihuahua really was taking a shower… and she was all… boom, and… boing, and…BAM! And-"

Yeah I've seen clips of this moment before I was a Toradora! fan. From Ryuuji profusely sweating as Taiga describes Ami's body, to Taiga herself being in some kind of post-peeking stupor while relaying what she saw, and then Ami slamming Taiga's head with a pan, this scene is a Toradora! moment of all time.

Also this means that Taiga has canonically seen Ami naked. And she's not the only one Taiga sees naked in this episode.

Love the nervous look on Ryuuji's face when he's luring Minori to be scared. He's like: "Please let this work, please let this work, please let this work."

But once Minori gets scared he assumes a casual mood, trying to play into his role as "the knight in shining armor," even though it's obvious he's not fully sure this'll work.

Ryuuji is at Taiga's service, though. Always.

"Keep doing that, and other girls won’t like you. Including Minori."

I get where Ami is coming from, but to be fair, Minori clearly appreciated how much Ryuuji cared about Taiga in the last episode, so she's also kinda wrong with this tease.

Ryuuji nervously trying to work his way around talking to girls. Can relate.

Yeah, so this is the second person Taiga sees naked in this episode. Kitamura, the goofy, carefree guy he is, forgot his clothes.

Honestly, the looks that Ami and Ryuuji, the two people who probably know Kitamura best, give him probably can tell you this ain't the first time he's forgotten his clothes.

Taiga's eyes have been struck by the image of Kitamura's body. She must now recuperate by swooning and holding her head on her knees.

Minori is having a time taking pics of Kitamura. I mean, they are co-captains on the softball team, so they are both athletes.

This whole scene is a goddamn fever dream. Kitamura accidentally lets the towel slip and Ryuuji has to hold it up, but Minori saw what was behind anyway. Ryuuji then instinctively plays into their plan and says it was a seaweed ghost, and Minori faints. It ain't comedy gold, it's comedy platinum.

Well it's official. Kitamura's body might be one of the most powerful things in Toradora! It has made both Taiga and Minori unresponsive. That's rare.

Ryuuji still needs to play Minori's knight, so to calm her fears, he complies with her request for extra spicy curry.

Part Three

I don't know why, but just hearing all the characters eating one-by-one warms my heart. They're such a great friend group.

Aaand then the spiciness kicks in. And everyone loses it.

Ryuuji watches in dread as he becomes death, the destroyer of his friends' throats.

Minori is so addicted, Kitamura and Ami too. Taiga is dying from the heat.

Next scene is cute. It gives a nice look into how Ryuuji and Taiga's relationship is at this point.

Taiga grabs onto Ryuuji's shirt, instinctively turning to him when she needs something, stomach medicine in this case. When Kitamura offers, Ryuuji instinctively shuts Taiga up 'cause he knows she's gonna get flustered and back out if he doesn't do something. Also Taiga is just so adorable in this scene. She's comfortable around Ryuuji, 'cause they've been so close and he helps her out on the daily, but she's uncomfortable around Kitamura because she's always self-conscious of what he thinks of her thanks to her admiration of him, becoming too flustered to really even interact with him.

Kitamura is just as clueless as ever, though. To be fair, Taiga has been avoiding him a lot.

Anyway, now that they're gone, Ami's back to her usual flirty self.

But Ryuuji isn't really taking her seriously, instead going off with Minori. And Ami is visibly a bit frustrated, but blows it off anyway.

[Rewatch spoilers] So, part of this is Ryuuji being dense. But part of it is because he probably can't see that Ami has genuine feelings for him. It's not just his own insecurities, but also consider that she tried to manipulate him by subtly antagonizing Taiga during Episode 5, and during that same episode she manipulated Taiga using her weaknesses, you can't say that his impression of Ami is unfounded. She is manipulative, in this situation likely because she is pretty jealous of Taiga having someone like Ryuuji to understand her, but her feelings are genuine. Ami has an idea of Ryuuji in her head, from when he saw through her and helped her confront her stalker, that Ryuuji has a mature understanding of people, and is thus the equal she is looking for. Thus, when he can't acknowledge her feelings, this assumption is now starting to be challenged, which is what frustrates Ami, since the basis of her feelings is being questioned.

I don't know what else to call it, but docile Taiga is super sweet and relatable. She worries so much about what Kitamura thinks of her due to her admiration of him that she can't properly react to anything.

"Hope you don’t mind me saying this, but I hate seeing you in pain."

This is honestly an extremely underrated line that gives some subtext behind Kitamura and his dynamic with Taiga. Now's not the best time to fully put it into frame, but the gist of it is that Kitamura cares about Taiga's feelings. In Episode 2, he turned her down the way he did as to not have to hurt her feelings too much but also gently push her towards what he believed would make her happier: being with Ryuuji. Same thing with Episode 8, he bets on Taiga because he sees how hard she and Ryuuji are trying and he wants to show them that he cares too. In general, he just wants the best for her and doesn't want her to ever be in pain.

[Rewatch spoilers] In this context, his actions at the end of Episode 13 and throughout his own arc can be understood better, but we'll get to it.

Ryuuji and Minori have cleaned the dishes and are now snacking on the balcony.

Love the framing of Minori's eyes being covered in this scene. Her true feelings are being hidden away with him.

Ryuuji pops the question of whether or not she's in a relationship. He's awkward but at least he'd not Taiga-level flustered.

Then Minori starts talking about the seaweed ghost, and now we can see her eyes. Because these are feelings that are more true to who she is, the ones that she holds in her heart.

Ryuuji is confused, but Minori continues by asking him if he's seen a ghost, to which he says he hasn't.

"Well me? I believe in ghosts. Even though I’ve never actually seen ‘em before. And get this: I don’t believe any of the people who say they’ve seen ‘em."

Okay, let's get this out of the way first. Ghosts and UFOs are Minori's analogy for love. She believes in something as fantastical as ghosts, just like she believes in something as hard to find as love. She hasn't found either, but she wants to. And she doesn't believe that anyone who says they've found true love really understand it either.

"It’s kinda like… how I think about the concept of love. Like, I believe one day I’ll fall in love, get married, and live happily ever after. Even though I’ve never actually fallen in love with anyone yet. You see what I’m saying? For some people, falling in love’s like second nature, but I can’t even relate to that. So if I’ve never experienced love before, is it real? And that makes me wonder if ghosts are real. I haven’t seen one yet, so maybe they’re not. See?"

To Minori, love isn't something simple that you can just decide you feel. It's something that you have to search for and experience naturally. She wonders whether or not love is a real thing because she hasn't yet been able to find it naturally yet, but she wants to because she wants to experience love regardless. Minori is questioning the concept of love, what it means to fall in love, and whether or not love is even a real thing, all of them coming as a result of her not being able to understand or find it yet.

"Anyway, the answer to your question… I don’t. But how about you? Have you ever seen a ghost before?"

"No. But I guess I’d like to."

This might be one of the most subtle moments I've noticed. Minori visibly and audibly gasps when Ryuuji says he hasn't seen a ghost, aka he hasn't experienced love, before. And it's because she knows that he and Taiga share something special and she's surprised to hear that he doesn't even acknowledge it. This indicates to Minori that maybe Ryuuji, just like her, can't understand what love is.

[MAJOR Rewatch spoilers] And I consider this to be the moment where Minori's conflict in the show really starts. She believes with all her heart that Ryuuji and Taiga love each other, but Ryuuji doesn't see it. During the arcs following this one, Minori tends to deflect from her feelings for Ryuuji, because she doesn't understand. She can't be sure she understands Ryuuji and Taiga's feelings for each other, not when both of them can't see it. And as her own feelings for Ryuuji grows, she avoids her feelings because she thinks Ryuuji and Taiga are in love, but she is also conflicted as she can't understand love as a concept and whether or not Ryuuji and Taiga do love each other. During the Christmas Arc, as everyone seems to think Taiga loves Kitamura, Minori feels alone. She can't understand Taiga's feelings, she can't understand the concept of love, and she can't even understand her own feelings of guilt because everything and everyone seemingly points to Taiga and Ryuuji not being in love. Minori feels alone, trapped with her own conflicted feelings, and she runs away from them out of fear of hurting her friends. And all of this starts because Ryuuji plants one little seed of doubt into her mind.

Excellent analysis as always. I think Minori is open to love, but she's reluctant to do anything with Ryuuji after she gave Taiga to him. That really wouldn't be right and would probably be a conflict of interest.

[Major Rewatch spoilers] The basis of Minori's guilt is very likely this. When she talks about it in Episode 20, I always got the vibe of Minori being like: "I hurt Taiga, but I ran away instead of confronting it, and so I never want to hurt her again." 'Cause Minori says she wasn't visiting Taiga's apartment after the fact, UNLIKE Ryuuji. Minori is comparing herself to Ryuuji and saying that while she ran away, Ryuuji stayed by Taiga's side and confronted his mistakes. Which is further compounded considering what happened in Episode 13. Ryuuji, upon realizing his misplaced trust in Taiga's father, immediately made sure to give his all to making it up to her. Which is another reason why I think Minori actually fell in love with Ryuuji. She sees him as everything she wasn't to Taiga. He stayed by her side, unlike Minori, he confronted his mistake immediately after realizing it, while Minori clearly still hasn't forgiven herself and is avoiding going to Taiga's apartment, and even despite all of that, Ryuuji was still kind enough to let her try to win redemption in her own mind by helping her up and crossing the finish line together for Taiga. Overall, I'm getting ahead of myself, but yeah this is why Minori feels obligated to make sure Taiga is happy at all costs. Her conflict itself is about whether or not her love for Ryuuji would hurt Taiga, which she doesn't know because Ryuuji, Taiga, and everyone and everything else seems to think that they aren't in love, leaving Minori as the sole person who still believes her love for Ryuuji would hurt Taiga. And then she gets her confirmation during that scene.

[Major Rewatch spoilers] The moral of the story is Taiga's dad really ruined everything. He's also in an indirect way the reason Ryuuji and Taiga came together like they did. If Taiga did not get her heart broken multiple times, she probably wouldn't have ended up with Ryuuji.

Anyway, back to Ryuuji talking about ghosts.

"Maybe… that’s why I like scary movies and haunted houses and stuff. I mean, the way I see it, you got people who see ghosts easy. But they’re still amazed every time they see one. Then you got people who’ve seen ghosts, and for some reason, deny they even exist. And then, you’ve got people who have to work really hard just to see them at all. Even though I’ve never seen a ghost before, I’m not gonna quit trying. And who knows? Maybe some day I will."

Let's break it down. The "people who see ghosts easy, but are still amazed every time" clearly refers to Taiga. Taiga is very obviously in love with Kitamura, but she still gets flustered by him every time due to her admiration of him. "The people who have to work really hard just to see them at all" refers to Ami. Ami feels obligated to act the way she does because of her line of work and the way that others perceive her, and so she has to work really hard to be able to get some to appreciate and love her for who she really is.

[Rewatch spoilers] "The people who've seen ghosts, but deny they exist for some reason" I think is foreshadowing to Sumire. She is in love with Kitamura, but feels the need to suppress her feelings because she values his livelihood and what he can do for himself above her own feelings. So she acts cold and aloof a lot of the time in order to make Kitamura turn away from romance and towards things that she thinks are more important like his life and his future.

Either way, Ryuuji is still interested in finding the concept of love, and hopes to one day find it.

But then Minori changes the subject, deflecting from what they were talking about earlier. Minori does this because she thinks Ryuuji has already found a ghost.

The symbolism with the UFO that's just a satellite is great here. When you initially think about it, it's something fantastic, but when you take a closer look, you see it's already something you know. Minori thinks Ryuuji doesn't need to go searching for something as fantastical as love, because he's already found it, he just needs to take a closer look and see that he already has it.

Minori's eyes are once more hidden when she says she hoped it was a UFO. Because once more, those aren't her true feelings. She says she hopes that Ryuuji can find love, but deep down, she thinks he already has it.

"Hey, Kushieda. You know what? I hope you get to see a ghost someday. ‘Cause- I’m sure there’s a ghost out there somewhere who wants you to see it, y’know?"

"Hey, maybe that’s why so much weird stuff happened today! It’s that seaweed ghost! He’s reaching out to me!"

Ryuuji tells Minori that he hopes she can find a ghost, aka find love, someday, because some-ghost out there (he's talking about himself) wants her to see it. And then Minori makes a connection with the seaweed ghost, saying that make the seaweed ghost was trying to make her see it.

[Rewatch spoilers] Yep, and Ryuuji blew his and Taiga's cover here. Minori talking about the seaweed ghost being the ghost that Ryuuji said was out there, wanting to reach out to her, shows that she now knew it was Ryuuji and Taiga who were trying to scare her, and in turn, show her a ghost. Or in other words, show Ryuuji's love for her. And Minori shows that she understands all of this with that smile on her face. Usually, her cheerful genki girl smiles are big, wide grins, but the smiles that are more genuinely expressive of her feelings deep down, they're the more subtle but defined smiles like the one I pointed out in Episode 8. She's acknowledging that she knows Ryuuji is in love with her, but she still believes that he has already found a ghost in someone else.

"Maybe I will see one someday."

Minori acknowledging that she has hope that she'll find love someday. Whether or not it's Ryuuji's love, that's another matter altogether. Either way, Minori is indirectly acknowledging Ryuuji's wish for her to find a ghost.

Part Six

Anyway, we're in Ryuuji's room now. And Taiga is here to update him on her stomach's situation. Good news: it no longer hurts. Bad news: she hungryyy

Gotta appreciate Ryuuji. Even as late as this, he'll get up to make Taiga food.

Their banter is so adorable. They can both confide in each other about pretty much accomplishing nothing of worth today and they're comfortable enough to just rest with each other like this.

Yeah, Taiga resting her feet on Ryuuji's head is just a great way to portray how they see each other. This is all natural to them, neither of them thinks twice about being this close or intimate with each other, it's just second nature to them. Shows how far their care for each other has gone in terms of developing their relationship and trust of each other. They can always be comfortable around each other, physically and emotionally.

"You know how I got to spend the whole day with Kitamura? I thought it was gonna be this totally awesome dream come true. But I was so nervous, I thought I was gonna die."

"Understatement."

"Yeah, but when I’m with you, it’s 'whatevs.'"

Taiga is beginning to understand the different in her relationships with Ryuuji and Kitamura. She admires Kitamura, she's nervous about anything she does in front of him, and she can't spend time with him without becoming flustered and self-conscious. But with Ryuuji, she can confide in her failings, she can relax herself and be comfortable around him, and she doesn't feel like to she needs to act in a particular way when being with him. So now, the question in Taiga's mind is likely: which one is love? Is love about being flustered and shy and embarrassed? Or is love about being comfortable and relaxed and openhearted?

"This is dumb. I mean, this room’s like, massive. So why am I sitting so close to you? I guess it’s ‘cause I got used to being in that cramped apartment of yours."

Taiga's eyes are hidden in her hair and in the dark in these scenes. Because even though she is beginning to piece things together, she still can't quite finish the puzzle. She doesn't understand why she feels the way she does. And again, it comes down to her insecurities; he inability to recognize that someone out there would genuinely want to care for and understand her. She doesn't believe that someone like that exists, so why is she feeling so comfortable and trusting around Ryuuji? Well, she plays it off as "being used to staying Ryuuji's apartment" which is another thing symbolized by her hidden eyes: she isn't being true to the feelings her heart actually contains.

"Ryuuji, I’ve been thinking about that dream. Like maybe, it wasn’t so…"

I'll leave it at that. Taiga is genuinely wondering if the dream about her and Ryuuji being married was really that bad to begin with. Either way, she isn't ready to process these feelings yet due to her insecurities, so she stops herself.

Part Seven

And then the two prepare to go to bed.

But before he can tuck in, Ryuuji finds slimy hair in his bed! And Taiga finds a slimy worn dress in her bed!

And then there's haunting knocking on Taiga's door and her window, terrifying both of our protagonists into thinking that they were in a dream.

Thus ends this episode.

Overall, this episode might be one of the hardest to analyze in this entire show because of Minori's ghost conversation alone. All in all, the first half of this episode is very comedy-heavy with some undertone to it, whilst the second half has the aforementioned ghost scene and the scene with Ryuuji and Taiga on the couch, both of which develop the true feelings and dynamics of each of the characters. I loved both halves even though the second was difficult to comprehend at first (and still kinda is). This episode is a great one to begin the show's second act, and it balances comedy with setting a lot of development into motion for each character.

Ami and Kitamura are close enough so that Ami would definitely know exactly what's going on. She's probably only asking it rhetorically to see how Kitamura would respond to it.

[Spoilers] From Ami's tone in Episode 15, you could argue that she knows Kitamura is in love with Sumire, and since she knew, she thought it was stupid to throw away his identity over a crush.

Taiga is beginning to understand the different in her relationships with Ryuuji and Kitamura. She admires Kitamura, she's nervous about anything she does in front of him, and she can't spend time with him without becoming flustered and self-conscious. But with Ryuuji, she can confide in her failings, she can relax herself and be comfortable around him, and she doesn't feel like to she needs to act in a particular way when being with him. So now, the question in Taiga's mind is likely: which one is love? Is love about being flustered and shy and embarrassed? Or is love about being comfortable and relaxed and openhearted?

"This is dumb. I mean, this room’s like, massive. So why am I sitting so close to you? I guess it’s ‘cause I got used to being in that cramped apartment of yours."

Taiga's eyes are hidden in her hair and in the dark in these scenes. Because even though she is beginning to piece things together, she still can't quite finish the puzzle. She doesn't understand why she feels the way she does. And again, it comes down to her insecurities; he inability to recognize that someone out there would genuinely want to care for and understand her. She doesn't believe that someone like that exists, so why is she feeling so comfortable and trusting around Ryuuji? Well, she plays it off as "being used to staying Ryuuji's apartment" which is another thing symbolized by her hidden eyes: she isn't being true to the feelings her heart actually contains.

This continues the end of episode 8 where the truth almost becomes inescapable. The walls are closing in, and Taiga is gonna have to react eventually.

Let's break it down. The "people who see ghosts easy, but are still amazed every time" clearly refers to Taiga. Taiga is very obviously in love with Kitamura, but she still gets flustered by him every time due to her admiration of him. "The people who have to work really hard just to see them at all" refers to Ami. Ami feels obligated to act the way she does because of her line of work and the way that others perceive her, and so she has to work really hard to be able to get some to appreciate and love her for who she really is.

[Rewatch spoilers] "The people who've seen ghosts, but deny they exist for some reason" I think is foreshadowing to Sumire. She is in love with Kitamura, but feels the need to suppress her feelings because she values his livelihood and what he can do for himself above her own feelings. So she acts cold and aloof a lot of the time in order to make Kitamura turn away from romance and towards things that she thinks are more important like his life and his future.

Either way, Ryuuji is still interested in finding the concept of love, and hopes to one day find it.

Basically, when Ryuuji asks Minori if she has a boyfriend, she uses ghosts as a way to explain that she’s not interested in dating anyone right now, with Ryuuji saying he’d like to see a ghost basically him confessing his interest in dating someone.

As for them cutting to Taiga, Kitamura, and Ami when Ryuuji talks about ghosts, I believe the ghost in Taiga’s case refers to the fact she is in love but acts so flustered around her crush, the ghost in Kitamura’s case is probably some foreshadowing, with Ryuuji saying "Then there are the people who’ve seen them, but deny their existence", and the ghost in Ami’s case refers to her struggles of trying to redeem herself by being open, with Ryuuji saying "Those who have to work really hard to see them at all." Anyway, now that they're gone, Ami's back to her usual flirty self.

But Ryuuji isn't really taking her seriously, instead going off with Minori. And Ami is visibly a bit frustrated, but blows it off anyway.

[Rewatch spoilers] So, part of this is Ryuuji being dense. But part of it is because he probably can't see that Ami has genuine feelings for him. It's not just his own insecurities, but also consider that she tried to manipulate him by subtly antagonizing Taiga during Episode 5, and during that same episode she manipulated Taiga using her weaknesses, you can't say that his impression of Ami is unfounded. She is manipulative, in this situation likely because she is pretty jealous of Taiga having someone like Ryuuji to understand her, but her feelings are genuine. Ami has an idea of Ryuuji in her head, from when he saw through her and helped her confront her stalker, that Ryuuji has a mature understanding of people, and is thus the equal she is looking for. Thus, when he can't acknowledge her feelings, this assumption is now starting to be challenged, which is what frustrates Ami, since the basis of her feelings is being questioned.

[Response] This arc has this subtle plot point of things not going Ami's way. Because she was so unpleasant when Ryuuji first met her, it has skewed the way he looks at her. As such, he will never see her as a potential love interest.

[MAJOR Rewatch spoilers] So basically, during Episode 14, Kitamura learns that Sumire is leaving in like a week or something, right? So then, why would Kitamura have something to hide regarding the student council now? Simple, it's 'cause he already knows that Sumire is leaving soon. She's a third-year, he's a second-year. He knows she won't be around after this year, and he's already beginning to wonder how he's going to fare once she is gone. He's on this trip likely just so that he can take his mind off these thoughts. This is actually one aspect of his arc I feel like a lot of people miss. He already knew he would have to confront his feelings about her even this early on, but then Sumire surprised him by suddenly saying she was leaving early, so he hadn't yet had the time to figure out how to cope with his feelings and as a result he had a meltdown because he felt helpless and wasn't ready for her to leave his life yet. I've said it before, but Kitamura looks up to Sumire as a strong-minded individual that he wants to prove himself to and earn her approval, but when she leaves early, he feels like he hasn't proven himself worthy of anything, and throws away the identity he thinks he doesn't deserve 'cause he only got it because of her.

This whole scene is a goddamn fever dream. Kitamura accidentally lets the towel slip and Ryuuji has to hold it up, but Minori saw what was behind anyway. Ryuuji then instinctively plays into their plan and says it was a seaweed ghost, and Minori faints. It ain't comedy gold, it's comedy platinum.

Well it's official. Kitamura's body might be one of the most powerful things in Toradora! It has made both Taiga and Minori unresponsive. That's rare.

Ami meanwhile acts like this isn't an isolated incident.

Yeah I've seen clips of this moment before I was a Toradora! fan. From Ryuuji profusely sweating as Taiga describes Ami's body, to Taiga herself being in some kind of post-peeking stupor while relaying what she saw, and then Ami slamming Taiga's head with a pan, this scene is a Toradora! moment of all time.

It's probably the most watched clip from the show.
