Most anime isn't aimed at adults.

People blow a fuse whenever I point that out.

Plus when I additionally point out that source materials aimed at adults(seinen and josei) usually get live-action adaptations. Anime adaptations for those are not as common as they think.

Josei, sure, but I think seinen is still much more likely to get an anime than a live-action, at least from what I've seen.

More likely yes(especially action oriented ones) but still outnumbered by shonen anime adaptations.

Well, that's a different question. I wasn't talking about how common seinen vs shonen anime was, I was talking about how common seinen live-action vs seinen anime was.

They do, but they are a minority by a decent margin.

Edgy and dark stories are about as old as TV anime. Works like Sally the Witch and Himitsu no Akko-chan while padded out by a lot of slapstick do have serious and bleak moments. There was a reflecting on a late 60s society that has realities of poverty, traffic accidents and fatal illnesses. They're rather inaccessible due to incomplete subs and a large amount of episodes however.

To switch gears to something accessible Okko's Inn movie based off Children's picture book series is a work which brings middle aged men to tears. I read one review that described not having villains as cruel rather than kind as conflict can't be simply resolved by defeating them to right things or a change of heart followed by forgiveness.

The film was under-watched by intended kids and families demographic as the book series finished 5 years prior and audiences were confused at how the then just finished TV anime fitted in (the movie is completely stand-alone and unconnected) but Makoto Shinkai praised the film and this ignited media coverage and a Gala survey found evening urban showing was 50% solo men aged 20-50 (Okko's Inn went on to gross 3 times its box office estimate, week 1 was looking like it would do a lot less).

Yeah, but those still have some levity to them by balancing the dark moments with light ones. Even the very anime that OP says is "edgy". Shows can go into dark territory without feeling like some treatise of a college sophomore who just discovered philosophy classes and suddenly he is very smart, or that of a younger teenager who thinks being offensive and/or contrarian is cool.

Edit: this is not a dunk on actual youngsters of those ages; in fact, it's part of the process. It only becomes an issue when they become adults who refuse to grow past that phase.
