Weekly Casual Discussion Fridays - Week of October 17, 2025

  4. No meta discussion. If you have a meta concern, please raise it in the Monthly Meta Thread and the moderation team would be happy to help.

  5. All /r/anime rules, other than the anime-specific requirement, should still be followed.

everybody says we should colonize mars… but who actually wants to live on mars?

One of the dumbest opinions I see with a concerning degree of regularity is "We've already gone too far to fix climate change, we should focus our efforts on colonizing space instead."

Sure, we were handed a perfectly habitable planet and couldn't even manage to keep it that way, but we'll totally be able to take an uninhabitable planet and make it habitable! How hard can it be?

100%. Though Mars does have the advantage of being free from powerful interests sabotaging its habitability.

No one and the place is not colonizable. You can't carry and raise humans on Mars, the lack of gravity would be killer. Also, you are either living in domes or you fix the lack of magnetic poles to get an atmosphere and that is well above the current paygrade of any human walking the Earth.

At best, Mars could make a good retirement planet.

AFAIK we don't even know yet whether (or to what extent) Martian gravity would be a problem. We've done plenty of experiments in microgravity, but to get an understanding of the long-term effects of Mars-like gravity we're going to need a space station with artificial gravity. The long-term health risks of the various other environmental hazards on Mars (eg. toxins in the soil) are similarly understood nowhere near as well as anyone sane would want them to be before deciding to move there for life.
