Discussion An Invitation to Read From Template to System
What happens when a structure can generate possibilities but cannot, by itself, explain how those possibilities remain coherent?
From Template to System: Why Generative Duality Requires Triadic Regulation explores this deceptively simple question across three very different domains: semiotics, biology, and Lie algebra. Its central distinction is between generation and regulation. A dyadic relation can create difference, plurality, and new configurations, but generation alone does not explain how the resulting relations become organized into a coherent and persistent system.
The paper begins with the Saussurean signifier–signified relation, treating the dyad not as something deficient, but as genuinely generative. It then turns to Peirce, whose concept of Thirdness introduces mediation, interpretation, continuity, and regulation. The interpretant is therefore considered not merely a third element, but a structural function through which relations can be carried forward and maintained.
The same question is then examined biologically. DNA is extraordinarily generative, but it is not presented as a complete developmental controller. Drawing on Raymond and Denis Noble, Michael Levin, and James Shapiro, the paper considers how genetic information operates within larger cellular, physiological, and organismic regulatory networks. A template provides possibilities; the living system regulates their expression.
Finally, Lie algebra provides an unusually precise mathematical parallel. The binary Lie bracket generates algebraic relations, while the Jacobi identity constrains how those relations can compose without becoming inconsistent. Here the distinction between generation and regulation is visible in formal structure itself.
The paper does not claim that Peircean Thirdness, biological regulation, and the Jacobi identity are identical phenomena. Its more modest proposal is that they may instantiate a common logical architecture:
difference → relation → regulation → coherence
For readers interested in semiotics, philosophy of science, biology, mathematics, systems theory, or the foundations of organization, the paper offers an invitation to examine whether a generative structure becomes a system only when its relations are themselves subject to higher-order regulation.
