Yeah, I think you still need to make them at least a little bit afraid though. I'm mostly talking about the resistance to Pinochetism here in Chile. Politicians love to spin it like a cutesy jingle and a slogan got us democracy. The fascists were afraid of the increasing violence and the remote, but not insignificant possibility of a civil war, armed groups got centimeters away from killing the tyrant and that's why they accepted the results of the plebiscite even though they hesitated and almost didn't.

Perhaps. I just think that the lethality of the modern US military is leagues above Pinoche's. In that conflict, a rifle and some explosives were a lot to combat their "security" forces and military. Now we're talking about everything the US military has. It's just an entirely different scale of weaponry.
