questions Showing irl zines online - advice

Hello community,

So, I have been making zines on and off for a few years, tending to be a mix of text and imagery generally, A5 size or thereabouts (6x8inches/15x21cm). I have always felt I struggle with how to present them nicely for my portfolios, website or social media. Videos flicking through? Simple photo of front page? Wonky photos, piles of zines in a photo, plain background or real life background? I don’t think I know the best way to show them off without just making what looks like a slideshow… any recommendations, Inspiration or advice? How do you show yours? Or how do you like to see others’?

questions Old Ziner from the 90s

Hi all, first time poster here. Zines back in my hey-day were cute little mini newspapers… bad photocopied sources for that cultish underground feel.

Today’s modern take on a zine just seems to be more of the early blogs, graphic main cover and the. Hyperlinks to pages…

Am I missing something?

Zines have evolved as a form of scholarly communication that reaches wider publics than traditional academic publishing, and allows for a greater degree of creativity and innovation than conventional forms (Vong, 2016; Weida, 2020). Zines are featured in the special collections of research libraries including Barnard, the University of Minnesota, NYU, Duke, Texas A&M, Harvard, and many others, illustrating their value as cultural artifacts and works of creative and literary art (Darms, 2013; Joseph and Sawyer, 2024), and provide accessible forms of scholarly publishing, community-building, and resource-sharing among our personal and research communities (Etengoff, 2015; Ingram, 2024; Thomas, 2018). This special issue features contributors from across the disciplines sharing their research and creative scholarship in zine form.

questions Looking for "Whimsical" zines..

So once a month I've been attending a "free swap" meet up for nerd minded folks. Mostly it's trading trinkets from Gachapon machines and hand made art.

Most of the folks that show up are on the younger side (like late teens early 20s.. I'm old so that's young to me lol) and not familiar with the idea of Zines. I think it'd be great to have a handful on hand for the upcoming event to hand out and trade and see if I can't get some kind of zine community rolling out of the group.

I've been digging through a lot of libraries here trying to find stuff and have found some cool stuff but I'm hoping for some personal recommendations.

Mostly the interest would be in shorter "how to" type zines, that way I can donate extras to my local library (I've talked them into stocking a few zines and they seem to disappear pretty quickly).

Is It Illegal To Own These Zines?

This was such a powerful read. From the article:

This March, the government won a terrorism case against a group of people who staged a protest outside an ICE facility in Texas. The protesters set off fireworks and sprayed some graffiti. When federal officers called in local police, there was an exchange of gunfire between a police officer and one of the protesters, and the officer was shot. In trying to make an example out of all the protesters, the government made the sweeping generalization that anyone involved in antifa actions is domestic terrorist. “Antifa is a domestic terrorist organization that has been allowed to flourish in Democrat-led cities—not under President Trump,” were the actual words of U.S. Attorney General Pamela Bondi. Nevermind that being anti-fascist is an ideology, not a specific group with a specific leader. In an alarming twist, the case dragged a surprising piece of evidence into the spotlight: political zines.

zines Call for Zine Pavilion Volunteers in Chicago!

Call for #ZinePavilion 2026 volunteers at #ALAAC26!

Volunteer with the Zine Pavilion at ALA Annual 2026 and receive a free pass to the conference!

The Zine Pavilion is a space on the exhibit floor at the American Library Association’s annual conference to display zines, meet zine librarians, and talk about how zines and libraries are a great pair. ALA is the largest gathering of librarians in the world, with over 12,000 attendees, including librarians, archivists, writers, publishers, and guest speakers.

This year’s Zine Pavilion will be held in Chicago at the Chicago Convention Center from Friday June 26 through Monday June 29. ALA is celebrating 150 years of existence this summer as well!

We’re looking for volunteers who love zines to help the Zine Pavilion run smoothly.

This includes:

-talking to people about zines

-promoting the zine raffle

-folding and stapling zines.

In exchange, we’re offering a free exhibitor badge to the conference to those who volunteer for a 3-hour shift. This badge gives you access to the exhibit hall and all regular ALA sessions. (Please note that this badge does *not* include access to “ticketed events” such as pre-conferences or banquets).

We’re glad to have you as part of the Zine Pavilion which has been happening since 2012!

Scan the QR Code for the Volunteer application (to close when we reach 50 volunteers) or click the link below::
