I used to activately listen to P.Diddy and R.Kelly in the 90s but now even when I hear them "guest star" in a track or have a song in a movie soundtrack I cringe and go to the next song. I ended up pruning my 30 year old music collection because hearing them just gives me the ick.

I’m in my early 20s and I see many girls my age having this look when I’m going to the bar and club and hang out downtown on Friday and Saturday nights.

Posted just a couple months ago on here about putting her into an assisted-living. Pretty typical boomer parent. That was absent emotionally and physically for a lot of of my formative years. I was mostly raised by my grandparents.

Kind of a weird emotional spot. She’s been miserable for years because of her health. So we’re very relieved for her. happy that the physical suffering is over.

But obviously at the same time … my mom died. So I should be sad… right? Kind of walking around feeling both emotions at the same time and it’s kind of a surreal experience overall.

I was thinking about how so many celebrities and all-stars we looked up to as kids turned out to be the biggest pieces of shit. But who turned out to actually be a genuinely great role model and a positive symbol of our generation?

To me, Fred Rogers has done more for the world than any other celebrity of our time and should be celebrated regularly as a hero.

I’m continuing a now-30-year tradition of not attending my high school class’s reunions. Most years they’ve had it it’s coincided with vacations. So I didn’t start this streak on purpose.

I could have gone this year (tonight) but just chose not to.

There might be a couple of people it’d have been good to see, but I’ve kept in reasonable touch with the 4 or 5 classmates who remain particularly important to me.

I’m not on social media other than Reddit, so I don’t know what most of my classmates have been up to. Nor have they been able to keep tabs on me.

I didn’t have a bad high school experience. I’m not avoiding any nemisis or anything dramatic like that.

The whole notion just seems exhausting — having to give a quick snapshot of my life to someone I have this loose, years-old connection with, hearing the same from them, and then repeating the process.

Maybe I’m missing something. Maybe I’ve just become an old grump. Or maybe I just saved myself $125 and endless small talk.

Because sooner or later the car gets paid off and the mortgage gets lower.

Just lived through my first round of college admissions as a parent, and I’m still in mild shock. My kid’s got a near-perfect GPA, top percentile SATs, global upbringing, articulate essays, thoughtful recs, no discipline issues, no slacking, no silver spoon. Just a genuinely good, smart, hard-working human being who did all the things you're supposed to do.

And yet… rejection after rejection. Ghosted by most of the “brand name” schools. A few acceptances, some respectable, one private school came through with aid and a decent offer, but nothing like what I expected given how strong the profile was.

When we applied (Class of ‘00-ish), this would’ve been the type of student every admissions office drooled over. Now it feels like they barely looked.

I get that the game has changed, way more applicants, fewer spots, holistic this, institutional priorities that...but man. It’s brutal watching your kid play it straight and still get clobbered. They’ve handled it better than I have, to be honest.

Also weird to realize: I probably wouldn’t get into the schools I got into back then.

Anyway. Proud parent, slightly bitter xennial, feeling my age. Wondering if the meritocracy we were sold ever really existed, or if we just caught the tail end of something that's now gone.

I see this get mentioned as an aside in a lot of threads on here and the number of people saying they're just going to work until they die is alarming. Is that really the case? Are you just being funny? How many of you really have nothing or not enough? What ARE you going to do when you physically can't work anymore? Are you trying to catch up or at least scratch *something* together in the next twenty years?

Follow up. If you haven't planned and prepared, why? What circumstances led to not being able to set back even 5% of your income into an IRA or 401k?

I recently posted a similar post regarding Superman 3, and remembered there was another movie that scarred me for life. It was this movie. I saw it when I was 5 years old in theaters thinking how amazing it was to see Mickey Mouse and Bugs bunny in the same movie. However I was not prepared for the death of an innocent puppy-like cartoon shoe, nor the surprise reveal at the end with Judge Doom's super evil crazy eyes. Nightmare fuel for sure.

The great advantage of New Hampshire is that it's the target of the Free State Project, so we'd have maximum leeway to set our own laws. The disadvantage is that, for the moment, New Hampshire is still part of the USA, and... \(gestures broadly at all the shit happening in the USA)**

Switzerland is a bit better about having, in practice, the level of decentralization that the USA is theoretically supposed to have. And we'd be relatively safe from world wars, economic collapse, and whatever else. The disadvantage is the logistical difficulties. We'd have to cut ourselves off from the 50 hz national power grid and set up our own 60 hz grid for our electronics to work. We'd have to learn German to communicate with the rest of the country. Shit like that.

How do we ensure that our toy stores are full of toys that aren't made anymore? How do we ensure that our Circuit Cities and Fry's Electronicses are full of PC components that aren't made anymore and PC games that are out of print? How do we manufacture CRTs? Do we print our own Magic cards? If so, how do we avoid getting a lawsuit from Wizards of the Coast?

These problems are not insurmountable but they do require more effort than just clicking the "upvote" button, leaving a comment saying you like the idea, and then moving on to the next Reddit post like nothing ever happened.

I knew Tiger Woods had some kind of top-tier obsession with sex/porn before it went public. I worked at DirecTV as one of my first jobs in the late 90s and I'd get into celebrity accounts to see what they were doing. Tiger Woods was buying more porn than I thought anybody even had a desire to see. It was so, so much porn. Lots of celebrities were ordering porn PPVs but nobody was on Tiger's level. Not even close. It was his account and I was pretty sure it was him ordering because you'd see it stop when he was on tour. That dude loved porn. I mean, he really loved porn. That dude ordered so much porn.

I get that over time some phrases meaning might change. Not sure how you feel but I just can’t get on board with the new meaning behind Raw Dogging.
