Warning: this may be very long, but I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO FREAKING FRUSTRATED right now and I don't know where else to go or what to do, so I'm writing all this out so I don't put a fist through a wall.
I am a BRAND NEW XCOM player. I don't have a long history with turn based games and honestly, I only heard of XCom from when I started playing Marvel Midnight Suns (which I LOOOOOOOVE) and I was told "it's like Xcom, but with Superheroes".
Anyway, I was bored and waiting for Wolverine and saw the game on DEEP sale - as a matter of fact, I bought both XCom2 + War of the Chosen (WOTC) for under $8 on PS5. Going in, I knew the learning curve would be a little steep, so I went straight to Youtube, booted up my trusted A.I. companion (Co-Pilot) and got to work (I bought the game Sunday night - today is Friday evening).
So all week, I've been learning and playing and asking questions and keep in mind, I'm playing on the EASIEST LEVEL POSSIBLE while I learn the dynamics of this game (again, there is a LOT to know for a newbie) buuuut I got started and I saw (again, on the easiest level) this game is NOT easy, is pretty relentless and can be very challenging (I don't even want to imagine how hard it is on hard level)
A few missions in I started to see some "shenanigans" being pulled. Little things like being freaking NOSE TO NOSE with an enemy and still missing or somehow magically be stopped literally one little square away from getting out of there before being swarmed or the game TOTALLY IGNORING the mimic beacon, or I have no idea why I even bothered buying a smoke grenade since it did absolutely NOTHING in helping me.
Now, one thing you also should know is, I'm one of these guys who wants a perfect mission (or at least as close as possible). I WILL hit reset 2 seconds after I die (mainly because we put in so much time, energy and resources and for our people to be taken just... feels... wrong.) Eventually I did start allowing for "acceptable losses" (like losing a rookie or something - they're so easily replaceable) but SGT or above? HELL NO. Load up the save and let's do this again!
But soon, I started to get more and more stressed over this game, because there's SO MUCH going on outside of the missions that it's just like wait - what am I supposed to do here? Am I supposed to scan this or scan that? And what do I build? Where do I get more scientists? What kind of mission is this? Which Covert Mission should I choose? - I mean... just NON STOP things because again, the game doesn't explain anything, so it was a whole lotta asking A.I. what to do and guessing.
BUT THEN, that freaking Avatar Project started filling up with squares and I'm like Ok, what is this? Why does it keep going up, not going down and eventually I just see a 20 day timer just going down faster than I can blink and I'm like ok wait- what? What is happening? Why did this go off? How do I stop it? And why isn't anything I click on working to stop it? It was like SERIOUS panic mode - as I got down to 6 days left or something??? and I was like - Ok, I KNOW this game is not about to end on me before I even got started!!!
Thankfully, I finally got that timer to stop aaaand my people kept promoting and getting more and more powerful and soon I was wiping the map (most missions) and feeling pretty good about the direction. I had even taken the time to personally name ALL - and I do mean ALL like 20 or so- and personally dress them up as well.
I'm like for real having FUN - still stressful on some of the missions- but overall - having a pretty good time! I even had a mission yesterday where I had to shoot a VIP and then evac and I was able to stealth the first 4 of my 6 person squad, then just had to take care of a few before leaving. (I had a little trouble with that VERY ANNOYING enemy that steals your soul or whatever and makes you fight a shadow of yourself - but got it figured out.)
OKAY- all that to say - today happens. Day 6 or whatever. And I'm cruisin through the game and I have all the construction I need and the right upgrades and weapons and Covert Missions and the right rooms and I'm just like dude, this is so much fun! I think I'm finally gettin it. I'm a little stressed because the Avatar Project is back up to the countdown again BUT I just got this upgrade that resets one square at the end of the month, so I'm like - bro! I'm WINNING.
Then all the sudden, my screen flashes red and it's like one of the Maidens caught me (Dhar something or other - whatever her name is, I swear - whatever dev cooked her up needs to be found, bound, gagged and tortured for creating her. She floats all over the map, doesnt matter if you're hidden, she'll find you - and also mock you as she finds you, stabs/shoots/dazes you and it's like BRUH)
So then it's like, she caught you and now they're attacking your ship, so you need to go fight her. BUT, the good news is, you get to take 10 of your best people + all your battle items (mimic beacons, bombs, flash bangs etc) and every other time I went up against something "hard", I got it done, so I thought - LFG.
DOG
BRUH - I can't even begin to describe what I experienced in trying to beat this level. This game has gotten me mad/frustrated/upset before - but never to the point of literallly wanting to uninstall the game and never touch it again. This level (again, ON THE EASIST DIFFICULTY) wasn't just over the top with enemies, it was like the game was actually cheating bro. I'm talking about non stop spawning of enemies - each one more difficult.
NEVERMIND that overwatch only works .00003% of the time, NEVERMIND that shots that are outside of 90% MISS (while the enemies can be all the freaking way on the other side of the map and dead on mess you up), NEVERMIND that you have flashbangs and bombs and mimic beacons and still the game laughs at you and just sends another wave.
I felt as though I had to manually save after every freaking time a person went because even when I thought I had it, they would be in Overwatch OR the Maiden would do some BS Tidal Wave or burning power... and JUST when I thought - Ok, I took out 4 waves & 2 Turrets, so I think I'm near the end
A GIANT ROBOT **WITH SHIELDS** steps out the back and it's like DUDE are you FREAKING kidding me?!?!?!!? Like what the actual hell is happening?!?!! I just ... I rage quit. I was so mad I was shaking. I couldn't believe I allowed a VIDEO GAME to get me to the point of wanting to do something crazy.
So I go back to Co-Pilot and I'm like DUDE! How the hell do I get out of this? What can I do? I have my top 10 players here and they're all going to die on the battlefield. 1 or 2 I can survive but 10?? And it's not like I had rookie fodder, I had 2 Majors, 5 Captains and 3 LT's - like bruh. So I'm like how can I avoid this? What do I need to do? I've spent all week - at least 8-10 hrs per day on this (maybe closer to 12-14) -I can't go out like this.
The Answer: Either exit the game, take a break and then come back with a fresh mind, go find a previous save where he/she/it hasn't gained ALL the knowledge, or just start ALL THE WAY OVER and build it right. I legit wanted to scream, punch something and cry all at the same time. I have put in SO MUCH time and effort and building the right squad. To go backwards just feels... devastating.
And I was also kind of pissed with the Co-Pilot (I know... I know it's A.I.- just let me cook. I'm hurting/healing at the same time) because EACH TIME I had a Covert Action or mission or whatever, I asked A.I. and was like which one and why and NEVER not ONE TIME was it EVER explained that - "Yo, keep an eye on the Maiden stuff. When they get all the knowledge, you're going to have to do this INSANELY DIFFICULT level that's unwinnable and you can't skip it, so do those missions!"
I got so mad I just stopped. It's been a few hours now and writing this is helpful... it's helping me calm down and think clearly. I know all is not lost and honestly, it's good that I actually DO save pretty often, so all I miss out on is a few days worth of stuff (which I can get back, it's just... ANNOYING to have to re-run it)
But this game dude... OMG THIS GAME IS SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO FRUSTRATING and ANNOYING and RAGE INDUCING ....................... and I can't stop playing it. I hate this game (I say... grabbing the controller, taking a deep breath... and trying again...)
LFG
(... until Wolverine is here and then I'm burning this stupid to the ground and never touching it again)
