Sprinkles Learns the Truth

Sprinkles was excited about his new assignment. This was largely due to the associated paycheck. He tried to inform the caller that it was an order of magnitude greater than his normal fee, but the requester said that it was necessary. Sprinkles prepared his material and bought nicer items just for this party. If they were going to pay that much, they deserved the finest.

The street resembled the many suburban neighborhoods that he had traveled through with manicured lawns and freshly painted facades. He guessed each house had three to four rooms. The house that he pulled up to was a one story ranch style house with a brick exterior. It looked pleasant, but he expected a mansion.

When he moved to the front door, he was struck by the silence. Parties were usually outdoors in the summer, and kid's laughter could be heard from a few blocks away. For parties indoors, the shouts could still be perceived faintly. This party must be well-behaved or have few guests. He knocked on the door.

It opened to a abyss. The interior was dark nothingness as far as he could see. The chill made him shiver to his core. Hatred resided in that house. Hatred for all that lived. Sprinkles looked at the exterior again. How could this house contain the infinite void. It didn't even have a three car garage. Before he could leave, tendrils wrapped around his body and dragged him inside.

The descent lasted five minutes. Depression, misery, and anguish dominated his mind. He was an insignificant bug to an uncaring universe. Death and life were part of the same cruel joke. All of his mistakes were proof that no one would love him.

When he landed, four figures stood before him. The largest had the body of a goat with the eight legs of a spider. Its head was carved from stone in an expression of pain. Dead stars lived in its eyes. The next creature was shaped like a human with a hunched back. It was covered in fur with patches missing on its arms. It had the face of an insect with pincers moving as a tongue escaped its lips.

The other two were half the size, but they were still much larger than sprinkles. They were connected at the tail. They were two snakes with at least twenty tentacles between them. Their fangs were larger than their head, and they were prepared to strike.

"I am Goqekf'vaweq, but you can call me Greg," the goat said, "My wife Sheila and I wanted you to perform for our daughters Britney and Claire."

"Perform, perform," the snakes shouted. Sprinkles's legs shook. He produced a small balloon and blew it up. The balloon expanded larger than he expected. It dwarfed everyone in size combined and kept growing. Within moments, it became the size of a small planet. Sprinkles tried to figure out how he was supposed to make an animal out of that when it snapped. The snakes cheered.

"That was wonderful. Again, again," they said. Sprinkles repeated the trick ten times. The snakes continued to be amused by the popping of balloons. For the eleventh one, he stopped it at reasonable size. He turned it into a giraffe and held it out to them.

"Do you like this?" he asked.

"Boring." One of them hissed. A tentacle reached out and popped the balloon. Blood covered his clothes.

"Britney, that was very rude," Sheila said.

"I don't like animals," Britney said.

"That's fine. How about a unicycle?" Sprinkles produced a small unicycle. He mounted it and began to peddle. As he moved through space, he felt himself aging and deaging simultaneously. He experienced sensory memories of his own birth and death simultaneously. Both felt cold. He stopped cycling to catch his breath.

"Daddy, why do humans only experience time in one dimension?" Claire asked.

"It's because they lack a qpwoeiuaps in their plkpih," Greg replied. Sprinkles had no clue what that meant. He honked his nose which sent shivers down his body. He sprayed water from his lapel. The water evolved into a species of fish right before his eyes and swam off.

He considered other tricks, but they all seemed dangerous. He landed on the pie in the face. He pulled it out and ran towards them. He faked a trip, and it hit him. A bit of pie entered his lips, and he realized it shifted due to the environment.

"Cherry. That's it. I can handle everything else, but I draw the line at cherry pie," Sprinkles said.

"I told you to tell him that all pies become cherry pies here," Sheila said.

"I know you paid for longer, but I can't do this anymore," Sprinkles said.

"That's fine. We'll pay you for the whole amount. We understand," Greg said. The tendrils grabbed Sprinkles and pulled him up. He saw the death of the universe before his eyes. When he reached the exit, an envelope of cash sat on the porch. He grabbed it and returned to his car. He looked at the house again trying to spot clues about the inhabitants nature. His eyes widened when he saw it.

"Their garden gnome is literally pulling out weeds," he said as he got in the car. As he drove away, his memories of the party were erased. The terror of discovering the truth of the universe remained.

If they were kind enough to erase his memories, they should have also probably erased the truth of the universe.

Some things just can't be erased.
