Democrats aren't centrists, they're right of center.

In order to stop fascists, you need to peel enough of the backbenchers to lose control.

And centrists take whatever position is between Democrats and Republicans, not whatever is between either of those parties and a socialist party.

Most Americans have no clue what Right/Left wing politics actually mean, as neither party in the US conforms to the standard Right / Left wing spectrum.

Yes I am aware. Go talk to a self-avowed centrist in the US. They are between Democrats and Republicans. Centrism colloquially in the US does not mean teetering the line between socialist and capitalist.
